One observation I do want to add is that overlooked in Michel's excellent contribution yesterday was his improved development as a pass-catcher (2-2, 12 yards). He's steadily developing into the true dual-threat that he was in college. I think there's much more to come. Only a matter of time before they split him out wide to create yet more matchup problems.

Definitely true. If Michel can catch and White can run, the personnel group will NOT telegraph the play.

Couldn't agree more with this. I think once he is more comfortable in the pass game, it will cause a lot more issues for defensives, as you mentioned. Michel really does excite me though. I also love the fact we can run the ball whenever we need to, as the year goes on that could be the difference for us.

Horrible blocking attempt by the LT (Brown or Waddle? I couldn't dvr the game so not sure which). Another one of those whiffs could very well send Brady to the sidelines.

It’s Waddle. You can tell from the hair.

Why was Waddle taking a snap at LT?

My rewatching... Showed the 2 missed TD throws to Gronk were very similar... Why tf was Brady throwing inside where defenders were..??? Both should have been back shoulder type throws that he has executed many times before..?

Mystifying... Ug.

Back to the topic, please. Question the personnel, play, or the execution, but not a poster.

Patriots-Jets Film Review: How Sony Michel Improved, Generated Big Plays

Look at that wall on the right side. Excellent work (as always) by Edelman of getting to the second level and sealing his man. This kind of run blocking simply wasn't happening with Mason on the shelf. That's why I said his return was every bit as important (if not more) than Gronk's.

One thing I’d like someone to look at is Brady when he’s throwing to James White in the flats. The amount of times Brady has dropped it just short of him. Is this because Brady is protecting James White from possible big hits?
My thought for most of those errant passes were that they were NOT misses, but throwaways. It looked to me that even if those passes had been completed any results would have been negligible. So Brady pretty much just threw them away and moved on to the next play or series. JMHO

These shots are what the people who slam McDaniels as a play caller need to watch the next time they feel at taking shots at him. Guy's not perfect (nobody is) but this is a great example of what makes him the best play caller in the league. Develin is no threat out wide... everyone knows that. But it moves another body out of the box to account for him and opens things up more for Edelman. It's great play design.

Strong safety rolls to Gronk's side in case it's a pass leaving the heavy side of the formation a bit lighter on defense for the Jets. Get to the second level and seal 58 and it's green grass for Michel. Obviously, this won't be sustainable as more opponents get film on it and get better at diagnosing run vs. pass out of this personnel, but it will make due until Allen is ready to come back.

I couldn't watch the game live or DVR it, so...what happened on 1st- and 2nd-down after the Edelman catch & run there? I've seen the 3rd-down INC to Gronk, but it's a damn shame that we couldn't get at least a FG on that drive. Just 5 more yards and I bet that Bill gives the FG a try.

You know what's a fun game? Go through Evan Lazar's thread and watch all of the Pats' long gainers of 20+ yards and try to figure out where Jamal Adams is and why he didn't make a play. People think he had a great game because he defensed Gronk a few times and made an athletic tackle. But the Pats had a lot of explosive plays, so why didn't the star safety make plays?
  • A few times when he was deep, he couldn't come up and make a play to limit the gain. The Edelman TD he was the deep safety and could hardly move up before Edelman ran him over into the end zone. Another time he couldn't cut off Michel on a run and had to retreat.
  • Sometimes he was schemed into irrelevance, playing up on the line over a TE while a running play went the other way for large gains.
  • Similarly, on Gronk's TD both safeties covered short and the CB was supposed to retreat to become the deep man in an exotic coverage. Gronk just beat the deep CB and trailing LB.
  • One time he was in MLB position and the play was a running play at Joe Thuney blocking the DL one one one with gaps to both side. Jamal neither stays back and limits the run nor attacks one of the gaps. He runs into the back of his own DL and Michel cuts for a 20+ yard run.
  • And then there were a few play action strikes to Hogan. Don't member if Adams was deep or shallow in those, but he was nowhere near Hogan.
So yeah. Some flashy plays, but a whole lot of irrelevance and some plain misplays mixed in.
