So what can be done to fix this (1-2 start)?

Someone mentioned it earlier. Why not inquire on deone bucannon? He’s obviously not in Steve Wilks defensive plan, and he’s obviously on the lighter side for a LB but he can cover. Compensation would be light.

Alas, his cap hit would be 13/16ths of $8.7M, fully guaranteed ... roughly $7.1M. The Pats currently have $3.55Min cap space.

His last good season was 2015, and the Patriots literally don’t have the cap room right now.

Pats desperately need a side line to side line LB...Bentley is developing nicely lucky for them. But the quick fix is not on the 2018 Patriots Roster. We have plenty picks move them for proven players with upside saves you the work of Drafting BB. I am on board with the notion Dowling.

Yes didn’t see the 6-7 mil still owed to him. If his last good season was 2015, why did zona pick up the option?

The team and media gave him a pass because he has been playing through some injuries. It kinda makes sense that you don’t evaluate a speed-dependent player when injuries are slowing him down. Now, fully healthy, he can’t even get on the field.

The team gave him a 7 million dollar pass. Thats crazy

@Ras-IR Dowling

In 2015, Buchannon was playing a hybrid SS/LB role. He posted 109 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 FF, 3 PD and a pick in 16 games, playing about 60 snaps/game.

Beginning in 2016, the Cards began using him in a more pure LB-type role (3-4OLB). He posted 89 tackles and 2 PD in 13 games at about 60 snaps/game (he was on IR for the last 3 games with an ankle issue).

In 2017, he posted 82 tackles, a sack, 2 FF, 3 PD and a pick in just 12 games (again, about 60 snaps/game). He missed the first 3 games, and one other later in the season, with an ankle issue.

IMHO, kind of a stretch to say that 2015 was Buchannon's "last good season".

Arians was the HC and James Bettcher was the DC for the Cards through 2017. When Wilks took over this season, he brought in Al Holcomb as his DC. Bettcher had run a 3-4. Holcomb is running a 4-3. Major scheme change.

Buchannon played 100% of the snaps in the Cards' opener this season, then only 35% in week-2. He was effectively benched for week-3 (played one snap). He has not appeared on the Cards' injury report this season.

EDIT:
(1) Keep in mind that Buchannon's option had to be exercised at the start of the 2017 season, long before the coaching change.
(2) Buchannon averaged 6.8 tackles per game-played each season from 2015-2017. He finished 2015 #1 in tackles on the team. He finished 2016 at #2, in spite of missing 3 games. He finished 2017 at #3, in spite of missing 4 games.

There was no performance drop-off. The scheme changed.

He traded for Gordon out of desperation after it hit him that Hogan Dorsett and Patterson could be a worse group than Cadwell, Gabriel, Gaffney and Jackson.

He traded to improve the team with a player he thought could who could fit into the cap.

I dont think he though what he had was good enough and his crystal ball broke so he was unable to see the JE suspension and the Matthews/Britt injuries

Makes any trade for Earl Thomas moot since he’s owed roughly the same. I see the Seahawks wanting picks, not McCourty to offset the money.

I had to go back to the original post, and break this down, just in case it's not sarcasm. Let's look at your points.

1) Traded cooks. Foxboro never pays top of market for WRs. They just don't do it, it's their business model, like it or not. So they rented Cooks for a year, who was coming off his rookie deal, and moved up 9 spots in the draft in the process. Again, you don't have to like it, but this is their business model. Draft picks are commodities with value, and they increased their value AND had Cooks for a year.
2) Tried to trade Gronk. Gronk is arguably the best TE ever. Certainly best in the game currently. He's a pain in the ass of biblical proportions off the field, and, most importantly, became a contrarian voice by with his social media posts, his moto cross presser antics, his I'm retiring rhetoric, and by jumping on the Alex Guerrero Pliability train AND being vocal about it. If you look at the history of guys in this locker room, BB moves on from them when they either a) squawk about money (Moss, Milloy) or b) become a contrarian voice to what the coaches are trying to do. (Adailus Thomas, Jamie Collins) The exception is when guys are exceptional, like Ty Law and yes, Gronk. But I will venture a guess and say Bill can live with a violation of A but not B, and a violation of B gets you shipped out of town fast.
3)Let Amendola walk. See #1. They would never pay 12m to a guy that has never had more than 700 yards receiving. Add to that Amedola's age, and it was a forgone conclusion that Amendola would walk after 2017. Good for him getting the money.

If you're point was sarcasm, then...

I see this line of thought, but ultimately the games are played on the field.

When good/really good players leave if you replace them with bad/mediocre players the team is worse off. Dorsett and Patterson are bad/mediocre receivers.

Cooks and Amendola most definitely would have helped the team so far. Cooks was a 1000 yd outside receiver who more importantly created space for others by commanding safety help. I really hope Gordon can have that kind of impact. Amendola was a clutch guy who could move the chains.

Obviously you can’t keep everyone, but if players are let go you need to replace their production. Replacing known talent with a draft pick is a crapshoot. You never know how your picks will pan out I was ok with Solder leaving as he is overpaid, on the wrong side of 30, and we replaced him with a good player. We can live without D. Lewis. The impact of Cooks and Amendola’s departures have hurt. Hopefully with Gordon and Edelman coming back we can get back on track.

Yup. No one is trading for McCourty with his cap hit.

It will be interesting to see what can be done with him this offseason. He’s slowing down and has a cap hit of $13m next year. $4m dead cap.

I imagine this scene when deciding on offseason personnel moves. Jordan Richards playing the part of Milton. You see we actually got rid of Jordan years ago but nobody bothered to tell him. And due to some glitch in the payroll system he was still receiving a paycheck. So we went ahead and just fixed the glitch.
