The Josh Gordon Thread: Pats Officially Acquire Gordon for Fifth-Round Pick

I’m an addict (Which may explain things to some of you). I’ve been in recovery for over 20 years. Any sip of booze, puff of weed, pain pill other than prescribed will likely kill me. Getting clean is hard, but I worked my ass off for it. Getting clean each subsequent time I relapsed was exponentially more difficult.

I have talent in my chosen field of employment. It wasn’t until I was no longer employable that I finally stopped for good. This isn’t everyone’s story. Many people quit before it gets to the level of dereliction. I hope Gordon is that guy, but odds are against him.

I’m hoping he somehow gets it and my team benefits. Moreso, as a fellow sufferer, I hope he loses the obsession to use and finds peace. Our record at year end pales to the insanity of addiction.
What a brave post that was.

Thank you. Much respect.

Interesting aspect of this, that hasn't been discussed:

“I [Urban Meyer] started asking him about it and he made this point to me and I shared it with our team. He [Belicick] said, ‘At this point in my career, I want to coach guys I like. I want to coach guys I want to be around and that’s it.’ He said, ‘I’m not going to coach anybody else.'”

I'm thinking Belichick has done his due diligence, talked to Hoyer, probably talked to Gordon, looked at the film, and thinks he's got a good shot at turning Gordon around and getting one heckuva chess piece for his games of checkers with the rest of the NFL.

Urban Meyer learned a new recruiting philosophy from Bill Belichick

IF Gordon is a 1/4 of what he was in 2013 we have a player. He's very Route savy Drags - crossing routes and Slants. Gordon is already a Beast on the outsides. I hope he makes the Best of his opportunity here Brady deserves him.

He showed flashes last year in the 5 games. The problem is the guy has literally miss 4 years of football battling the marijuana addiction. He missed the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Hoyer knows him. I think like sticking Floyd with Brissett, Hoyer may be the prime baby sitter.

The guy has top tier WR talent, with worse substance issues than Floyd. He's worth the gamble, but it's no assurances.

I saw a report out of Cleveland he wants this, wants to stay clean, and then cash in with a big pay day after. If that's true he should pay off.
I'll bet Hoyer' s overjoyed at being anyone's "baby sitter".

Guys who do well here historically are Great Route runners. Cooks being the exception because of his Elite outside Speed. Gordon can run all the routes long and short. Fun to see a guy that Big running Edelman type routes. IF his head is on playing Football League watch out.

Interesting how Hoyer's G2 helped the team make this kind of decision.

Josh Gordon was not addicted to pot.

I bet he spoke with Lombardi too I'm sure.

I was reading an SI article about Gordon. He was brought up around drug and alcohol abusers and passed along through HS, college and the pros because of talent with little to no guidance.

The Pats can offer support and guidance . If he's receptive, this could be the break he needs in life

Helluva post. Much respect.

Live look at me watching Gordon’s 2013 highlights.

I sure hope so. I obviously want him to kick ass here but if he can ultimately find a normal life without chemical dependency then he's won.

Some comments on the comments.

1. WOW 60 pages and counting. I don't recall a thread ever growing this fast.

2. Well if we wanted a reason to forget about the Jacksonville drubbing we surely got it. I was NOT looking forward to the media creating the "end is near" narrative like we heard after the KC game last season. Instead it seems we have all become focused on the Gordon acquisition. This alone was a good reason to pull the trigger on this trade.

3. I give him only a 50-50 chance to make this work. First we don't know what kind of shape the kid is in at this point. Hard to think that he's in the same shape as the guy we saw pulling away from Talib a few years ago. Secondly we have the "getting to learn the system" issue that ALL receivers face when they come to NE. Randy Moss was a WR savant and quickly learned it. It took Dorsett a year to get to this point. Ocho and others never got it.

4. The only way it can work is if they give him a limited route tree and eliminate most if not all of the option decisions from his game.

5. I'm fine with the CONDITIONAL 5th round pick. IIRC the Pats had 12 picks slated for next year's draft. To my mind that is almost too many picks in a draft. BTW- does anyone know exactly what Gordon has to do for the Browns to get that 5th round pick? Its probably been stated, but I'm not reading 60 pages to find out. ;)

Play 10 games or we get back a conditional late pick

I am pulling for the kid because he has never hurt anyone but himself. Let’s not fool ourselves here.
He has had constant substance abuse that he cannot seem to control. This may not be in the category of he will be fine now that he is around good leadership. I have been privy to the spiral with my occupation. The problem is constant Tiny Dancers in their head. They come out of their skin trying to control the demons.
Hopefully Josh has already started the period where true soberness starts to show its face. As I started with. He is not a bad kid. Has never hurt anyone but himself. Those type of kids I pull for.
Go get them Josh. We sure as hell could use you and are craving for a new superstar. Long way to go but possible
