This sounds like the AD may be in much deeper water that UM.
Maybe, although it sounds like he handled it as properly as he could. He questioned Smith, arranged for him to answer questions to the police, and no charges were ever brought forth.

I don’t know if he fulfilled his obligations or not, but I don’t get the idea that he’s necessarily in hot water. That said, I could be wrong as to how I’m interpreting the situation.

I just read the article. There seem to be several contradictions coming from both Smith and Meyer and nothing said did much to move the needle in my opinion.

If Meyer did indeed report the issue then I end up with a question and a conclusion: 1.) why did he lie about the incident recently? -- and -- 2.) someone higher on the chain of command completely screwed up and should be held ethically and legally accountable.
The needle was moved if he actually reported the incident, which it seems like he did if the AD helped to get Smith into the police station.

He’s guilty of lying to the reporter, but last I had checked that isn’t a criminal offense, nor is it an offense where someone should be fired. He didn’t handle the question properly, but if this is true it completely changes the whole entire issue at hand.

I feel bad for this woman, but she blames Urban Meyer and his wife for not firing the husband. Yet admits her own mom and dad told her not to go to the police.

Where is this woman's dad?

That's not exactly accurate, she said that while they were together she was advised not to go to the cops for fear he'd be fired. Legally the families acts are neither here nor there as far as OSU and the investigation goes. Morally it's another story.

She said after they broke up she told Meyer's wife and asked her if she told Meyer. She said Meyer's wife did not respond. My understanding is Meyer's wife is also a OSU employee. She may have some legal culpability. But the largest legal issue is the question of Meyer's awareness of the issue. And if so did he report it further to OSU officials.

I was talking morally. Not legally.

And I put most of the responsibility to report on the woman and her family/close friends who told her not to report it. Not Urban Meyer. Again, I'm talking morally. She's gotta report it to the cops when it gets bad enough. And her close friends/family are much more responsible for this getting reported. Cause they know the details.

I get that, but they are very different issues. The legal issue is the most important re potential sanctions Meyer and others face. He could lose a multi million dollar job and face the possibility of not finding another employer. Or like Briles go elsewhere for a fraction.

Morally this is repugnant. Could hardly have been handled worse by those closest to this woman.

But the anger towards Meyer right now has nothing to do with his contract. Nobody cares that his contract stipulates he report it. In fact, if his contract required that he NOT report this, (just for the sake of argument) people would still be pissed at him for not saying anything.

So yes, all the anger being targeted seemingly towards him alone is misguided. There is plenty of blame to go around, but too many feel that he's enough.

Redacted my original post.

Lots of speculation. I have a feeling that we’re gonna find out more about this.

They can fire Urban Meyer for anything if they want. I'm gonna be much harder on this woman's close family and friends than I'm gonna be on Meyer. Morally speaking. Legally, I'm not too concerned. There are lots of things written in contracts that are dumb and sometimes legal things are overreaching. I don't like this woman going after Urban Meyer. She was the one who married a jerk, so I'd say to her don't put this on Urban. She should go after herself for marrying a jerk, with a violent temper, who eventually beat her up. She's good enough looking to have married a different guy that didn't have a violent temper. Or a guy that maybe had an alcohol problem. She shoulda held out for a real man. Again, Meyer is way down the list if we're blaming.

Without knowing much of the details, you very well may be right with your last point. I'm a dad of a daughter, so I'm gonna intervene if it's happening to my daughter.

Zach and Courtney Smith have 2 young children. A boy who is around 7 yrs and a girl around 5 yrs of age.

That complicates everything. And probably makes the wife not want to give up on the marriage. Also makes more sense that her family was telling her not to go to the authorities with this. When you have kids, it can make some people want to stick it out longer.

Title IX and willful ignorance don't mix. And I think I'm being generous about the willful ignorance part.

As for Mrs. Smith, her story is all too consistent with other co-dependent spouses staying with an abusive partner, whether that abuse is emotional, physical or both. Codependency causes both women and men to stay way too long in toxic relationships. I hope the best for her moving forward.

Regards,
Chris
