Hackenburg visiting Pats

************ Hackenburg is ****ing terrible, he's the only 2nd round QB to never play an NFL snap and he was miserable in college to boot, what's wrong with some of you??

Also lmao at the one poster implying Hackenburg's "talent" wasn't appreciated by the Jets but also that Dak Prescott is a bad quarterback. It's opposite day, I guess

Of course he's terrible, would you expect a non-terrible QB to be available at this point? The only QBs available are turds, so the key is finding a turd that might actually be polishable.

He's may end up in the CFL now ... Edmonton Eskimos have 1st dibs on him.

I feel BB looking at Hackenberg is just kicking the tires in case Hoyer winds up being as bad as some people say he is. The Pats need a legit #2 QB behind TB12 and if it isn't Hoyer, someone with NFL experience is a must.

Hackenberg has never taken a snap in an NFL game.

I'd prefer this QB over Hackenburg anyway.

Yup, a QB who was miserable in college was a 2nd round pick. I guess that we should ignore all the scouting and come to this board for evaluation.

The reality is that we are looking for a player who might be our backup if Hoyer is declining faster than hoped, a camp arm to compete with Etling for that role.

Hackenberg wasn't signed, so he was deemed not worth one of our 90 roster spots. I'm fine with that.

BOTTOM LINE
Evaluating anyone as a starter in the NFL is not relevant to a camp tryout, for any player. that is NOT what tryouts for a spot on a 90 man squad is about.

Yes, a QB who was miserable in college was a 2nd round pick. You can thank the Jets for that headscratcher. But even they eventually figured out he wasn't worth a damn, and the Raiders discovered the same thing.

Kid needs to go to Canada or the AAF to get his head screwed back on.

I don’t put that much into the Raiders stint, though, due to the fact that they have 1) Carr, 2) Cook, and 3) Manuel as their top three. Once they had a chance to snag that defensive player they signed (forget who it was), the position of QB became the obvious choice for a cut, and 2/3 of them have starting NFL experience.

I have no idea as to whether Hackenberg can develop into anything in the proper setting, but he was always projected to be a top 1-3 round selection in the draft, based on his size, good freshman year, and three year starting experience at a power 5 conference. He followed that up with a poor sophomore season and ended his career with a mediocre junior season (16 TDs vs 6 INTs) so he didn’t do himself any favors, but at one point it looked like he may have been selected even higher than he was. I may consider giving the Jets a rare pass in this case, but that’s just me.

It's weird to see "he was a 2nd round pick" bandied about as meaningful in a forum where people can't wait to be rid of Cyrus Jones.

Let's be very clear about Christian Hackenberg's college career. He was at Penn State at the height of the Jerry Sandusky - Joe Paterno debacle. He came in the year after Joe Paterno died and in former Pats OC, and Dorchester native, Bill O'Brien's second season installing a pro-style offense. The coaching staff was dealing with the scandal fallout, the university and alumni were in turmoil. Penn State had had a huge rash of scholarship upper classmen defections and drastic cuts in scholarship recruits.

That was probably the toughest environment any 18-year-old could face. In spite of it all, Hackenberg won the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award in that environment with a bad college football team.

That said, my guess is that O'Brien called Belichick and asked him to give Hackenberg a look. He's leaving a train wreck Jets franchise in search of a job, could be a better #3 than Etling, and might have what it takes to flourish under Josh with Brady and Hoyer in front of him. He's not my first pick for a veteran FA QB, but there's no harm in taking a look.

The bottom line is to cut this kid a break.

Id love to see Josh turn him into a player and would be awesome if he outplayed Darnold it would be amazing.

Yes, this thread has convinced me that Christian Hackenburg is, against all evidence, a future NFL star. Never mind he's never played an NFL snap and it looks exceedingly unlikely he ever will.

I must admit though, I love these fanfics where Bill O'Brien, the head coach of a conference rival, calls his former boss to gush to him about how great a player is, a player he himself has made absolutely no effort to sign. (To be clear, O'Brien would be fired if he did that.)

Hackenburg is still somehow surviving off the fact that he was a top-rated QB out of high school. He was a very mediocre college QB.

Bill O’Brien recruited him and coached him a year at Penn State. He probably knows him better than any NFL coach, and I don’t see him showing any interest.

With the number of first round QBs taken this year, there should be several veteran serviceable backups available when teams make their cuts, so I'm not too worried if Hoyer doesn't pan out.

Unless Etling develops into a capable backup over training camp, it’s difficult to see them cutting Hoyer to bring someone else in without the proper knowledge of our system.
