(They say) This Hypothetical Earl Thomas-Patriots Trade Makes Ton Of Sense

and to be even more fair, the Patriots could be 3-0 if that debacle in 2012 wasn't such a robbery by the refs in the 24-23 loss. The Pats should have won the game by 10 points

and don't forget the 3 points BB eschewed at the end of the 1st half from the 3 yard line

The most damaging came at the end of the first half when coach Bill Belichick opted to throw with 6 seconds remaining instead of kicking the field goal from the Seattle 3. Brady was flagged for intentional grounding and the ensuing time runoff ended the half.

"You lose by one point and here are a lot of things we could have done better to not be in that situation," Brady said.

Seattle's defense gave up a season-high 475 yards after not allowing any of its first five opponents to top 300. ]The Patriots went eight consecutive drives without punting, and ran 85 offensive plays to the Seahawks' 55, yet could not get the touchdowns to put Seattle away.

So let's be fair, OK?

?
I'm still mad, bro.

Sounds dumb to me. We want to get in a bidding war to acquire someone at our deepest position? 13 million per for our 4th safety, or should we just start cutting Dbs. Also don't know when Shaq became a hall of fame guard.

Only thing I'd say is a dominant secondary is what wins us Superbowls.
I'd much rather trade for a pass rush and develop the young guys once You get rid of players who can't cover or take angles you'll be surprised how good this secondary looks.
We have studs in Gilmore Mccourty a very good tough nosed player in Chung alot of potential between all the young developmental corners.
A potentially very good Nickel in Jonathan Jones.
We don't know if Rowe is a good player who was injured and ineffective or if Rowe is a long line in players who can't put it together once they get in the NFL.
If only we could put Richards brain in Rowe's body we might have something.
A more simplified aggressive scheme sounds to me like we prefer players who can take angles hit and cover vs know all the assignments but can't carry out one of them.
If so THANK YOU!

Earl Thomas will end up with the Chargers...if there is any common sense left in this screwball league.
That would be a pretty nasty defense given health (which is not a given with the Chargers).

Agree.

I can understand moving Shaq for a player or a pick but for a 29 year old player who has missed some time and then hand him a $39m deal is beyond dumb.

We have a good secondary IMO. One more depth safety for when we play a gimmick defense in the super bowl or,as you say, shore up the positions which are lacking in talent in the front seven. With gilmore's salary, we'll need to have one or two starters on the other side who don't break the bank and I think there are good prospects.

A high priced safety is crazy IMO.

I don't think it's dumb at all. The money would be the only area of concern but if they feel that they can fit him under the cap then I'm all for it. A starting safety rotation of McCourty and Thomas would be among the best in the league. Harmon can take over Chung's job and Chung can get his snaps decreased and take over for Richards in those subpackages. Richards can go wherever he'd like as long as it's not Foxboro.

I prefer Richards stays in tbe AFC East.
The best gift you can give Tom is to let him target Richards every play.
The real MVP for the Eagles is Jordan Richards and whoever the scout was who made the ridiculous pick.
Hopefully Flores doesn't care Richards can write on a blackboard and has the balls to say great kid could marry my daughter but not cover on my Defense.

I like Mason but I don’t understand when he became this elite guard commanding 8 figures annually. Seems that has been a topic of discussion only recently.

He is a very good run blocker but that’s less important in today’s game. And don’t forget he missed the block that led to the Brady fumble that lost the Super Bowl.

I hope we keep him but of all the players to break the bank for, I’d put him lower on the list.

Mason cost us the last super bowl by allowing brady to get strip sacked. And he allowed a lineman to bull rush him into brady in SB51. I haven’t been impressed.

Hard to fully fault him for that since Brady held onto the ball longer than he should have on that play. He had an outlet to White for an easy pitch and catch and a scamper out of bounds but he locked on to Gronk. Mason should have held up better, but he doesn't deserve all the blame for that. Mason has otherwise had a very solid career here and has molded himself into a fine guard after coming out of GT a bit on the raw side (given the offense he played in). He'll get, and deserves, a very healthy pay day.

Brady allowed Brady to get strip sacked on that play. If your criteria for a good offensive lineman is that he never give up a sack, I think you're going to be massively disappointed forever.

Mason is going to command a big contract and the Pats aren’t going to open the checkbook that wide. Thomas is a hammer and would be a good presence in the locker room as well as a tone setter on the field. He plays similar to Rodney but I don’t think will freelance as much as Rodney did/could. He could give our D some teeth.

When safeties like Thomas start getting injured, it's a series of short seasons followed quickly by a massive drop-off in performance.

No thanks.

I don't get that at all. Mason punched out weakly, Graham engaged and simply went around him with a simple grip and go. Mason was off balance, tried to through his body right out, but iGraham had enough leverage to get his left hand on the ball.

I don't think anyone here will claim that was a good play by Mason. Just that, had Brady taken the dump off to White, that strip sack never happens. They were both to blame for that play.

Rather go the Chandler Jones route and maybe get a late day 2 or early day 3 draft pick that might stick for 3+ years for Mason than one year of Earl Thomas and his salary.

Let's talk about 2018.

If we use the big nickel a lot, then we need FOUR safeties.

If we use the traditional nickel a lot, then we need FOUR corners.

Why do folks readily accept the need for 5 or even 6 corners, and then see little value in a fourth safety?

How do we know he wasn't trying to pass to another open receiver?
