Patriots 53-man Roster Projection 1.0 Post Minicamp Edition

So we should rename Etling Sudfeld, then?
In my roster prediction I only keep two QBs. Remember the Pats kept Brady under wraps that 1st year as the 4th QB. He didn't play a snap in the pre-season.

Etling throws like Brady (Tom House is his QB coach too). He is said to make intelligent decisions on the field like Brady (he is no where as good as Brady is after 18 years in the league). Etling threw 16 TDs to 2 INT (one was a hail mary). Etling went from a bad Purdue team to LSU and played against the best competition in the SEC week in and week out.

Im anticipating seeing Etling in training camp and pre-season.

Patterson does one thing well and that's KO return. Now that KO returns are being de-emphasized, I think he could get cut.
Many feel as though a proven KO returner will be even more of an asset than in previous years, due to the wider spacing which will resemble punt returns.

Impossible to assess without more snaps, but Langi was more highly regarded for his versatility and decent athleticism/length during his draft year than Bentley...Sam is a better athlete than Langi or Bentley, but doesn't quite have the sand in his pants as either of them...and Roberts just plain Sucks.

Yet you did assess him and claimed he was ahead of Roberts... how did you come to that conclusion??

Yes, I understand your position. I doubt that Belichick agrees. In any case, we should have 2 punt returners. At very least, Edelman is the backup punt returner.

Until Edelman returns? The Only times I would use him at PR are when he is Fair-Catching deep in our own end.
The days of him being our primary PR should be Over.

Given all the hoopla this offseason, there is something seriously wrong with this roster. I agree with just about every decision that you've made. It seems that we rarely get up to 49 before camp.

As a nitpick, I believe that Roberts will make the roster as a LB on running downs. I see Bentley, Sam and Langi fighting for the last LB spot. I could see an addition (by trade) replacing Roberts, but not a rookie.

Also, there is no reason to prejudge who would be brought back when Edelman returns (or any of the PUP players). Much will happen on he injury front between now and then. Health will likely determine who is cut.

My 53 with recent injury news.

QB (2) T.Brady, B.Hoyer
RB (6) S.Michel, J.White, R.Burkhead, J.Hill, J.Develin, B.Bolden,
WR (5) J.Matthews, C.Hogan, K.Britt, C.Patterson, M.Slater
TE (3) R.Gronkowski, D.Allen, T.Niklas
C (2) D.Andrews, T.Karras
G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, C.Croston
T (4) M.Cannon, I.Wynn, T.Brown, L.Waddle

DE (5) T.Flowers, A.Clayborn, D.Wise, D.Rivers, L.Guy
DT (4) M.Brown, D.Shelton, V.Valentine, A.Butler
ILB(2) D.Hightower, C.Sam
OLB(4) K.VanNoy, M.Flowers, H.Langi, B.King
CB (5) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, D.Dawson, E.Rowe, J.Jackson
SS (3) P.Chung, J. Richards, N.Ebner
FS (2) D.McCourty, D.Harmon
ST (3) S.Gostkowski, R.Allen, J.Cardona

Total players: 53

PUP: C. Jones. J. Jones, M. Mitchell
SUS: Edelman

Offensive Notes - I think we go 9 OL and keep both Croston and Karras. 4 True WRs is a little lite but with Edelman coming back in 4 weeks and Berrios making the PS it isn't as thin as it looks. For RB Bolden sticks and Hill stays at least for a while. Once Sony finds his feet we probably let a RB walk to add Edelman in 4 weeks assuming health of the position. 3rd TE is a guess but I'm honestly not concerned about who sticks. 3rd QB to PS.

Defensive Notes - 9 DL isn't all that unusual for BB. Particular with Guy being a player who can eaily go back and forth between DE and DT. Very curious to see how Rivers and Wise look in year 2. Shelton is a fairly underrated signing around here as well. I see him as likely our best DT overall even if his pass rush is meh. LB is kinda an interesting spot but it all comes down to Hightower. Hopefully Sam can make some plays and be the 3rd guy by year's end behind Hightower and Van Noy. CB will be a really fun spot to watch. I can really see Rowe perhaps being cut this year. He regressed last year IMO. I don't have any stats in front of me. I just don't think he did a good job. I wouldn't mind seeing Crossen and Jackon cause a youth movement but I don't think both make it right now. I hope Dawson is the day 1 starter we think he is. At safety I kept Richards just cause I think he is BB's guy and that's it.

Why the hell would they waste a roster spot on Etling?

For fun, I'll make the argument. Etling checks all the preliminary boxes. He's tall enough, strong enough and has above average athleticism. He has the arm strength and (thanks to Tom House) accuracy and touch to play in the NFL. By all accounts, he keeps his mouth shut, watches a ton of film, and listens to everything Jerry Schuplinski tells him as it were the gospel.

So, does this necessarily mean he has what it takes to be an NFL quarterback? Of course not. His game has some very serious - if not fatal - flaws. The biggest (IMHO) is his inability to keep his eyes down field. At LSU, he would bail out of the pocket at the slightest hint of pressure, especially from the edge. He was notorious for missing wide open receivers if they weren't his primary read because he was too busy looking at the pass rush and not going through any sort of progressions.

The flaws in his game are not quickly correctable. The Pats are not expecting him to be ready to play by the end of training camp. To make the team, or much more likely the practice squad, what he has to do is show is improvement. He has to improve enough to convince Bill, Josh and Jerry that he gets it and that he's worth investing a year of their time so that he can come into training camp next year and be ready to compete.

Can he do it? The odds don't just say no, but hell no. But stranger things have happened. I'm at least willing to give the kid a chance.

The difference between making the PS and making the 53 was my point. I don't see the justification for putting him in the 53. Your post reinforces my position.

I think wide receiver is going to be a very interesting battle.

Edelman and hogan are locks.

Mathews and Britt are in only if they pass the Brady trust test.

Patterson and slater are special teams demons with limited receiver potential. Can we really afford to keep both?

Berrios or Riley has to step up into the amendola role as the second slot receiver if Mathews fails to make the roster.

Absolutely you can and you cant really compare them even though they are both elite ST players. CP is an actual receiver who has caught 83 balls for 762 yards over the last 2 seasons with 2 different teams, QBs and systems. All CP needs to do here is be the 5th WR and he has shown capability to be better than that.

Given his performance in returns and the fact that the new rules might make it even more in his favor you have a really valuable player here. FYI, our 4th WRs in the last 2 years have only had 218 (avg) yards receiving per year.
