I love seeing these guys have bad days. It helps us connect with them. Tiger Woods opened up with a triple bogey 7 on the first hole and missed the cut at 11 over. That was still two rounds at 5 over. I would give anything to shoot one round at 5 over.

A round of bogey golf or slightly better is what I hope to do every time I play 18. That basically means not finding the water, hitting every tee shot in the fairway, getting out of sand traps in one stroke, and staying inside of three putts on every hole. Above all, it means not losing your cool like Lefty did yesterday.

Those guys are basically playing golf on a pool table in the wind.
Agree.

I love golf. I've been playing since I was a kid and I'm in my mid 40s now. My middle daughter is 13 and she shoots mid 40s for 9 from the laidies tees. My dad was a single digits handicapper so I was real lucky to learn the game from someone very good- and honest. I'm a middling player. Lowest handicap I ever carried was a 8. That was before kids. I don't carry one anymore but I'm playing around a 12 I think. Nothing special. I'm just happy to get out there.

Anyone who takes this game seriously (i did at one point), and is in the middle of an intense round and suddenly blow up will turn their brain inside out if they let it.

The course got to Phil yesterday just like it's gotten to all of us at one point or another. He would have been better off putting on glass.

Phil is a class act and has been a great ambassador of the game. I'm not going go all Goodell on him for loosing his cool for 5 seconds.

Calling for DQ is overboard.

Penalizing him two strokes for being an idiot is appropriate.

Agreed it will always be a part of his story, that and the penalty strokes are punishment enough. I think it will be mostly laughed at.

You can bet Fox doesn't want him to be DQed.

An excerpt from an article sums it up for me.
"The simpletons among us figured Phil had a momentary lapse of reason and reacted like a grade-schooler playing miniature golf. Thing is, Phil can’t put an “X” on the scorecard like the rest of us. This is the United States Open."
Lefty, signing autographs and smiling and posing for pictures. Behind him, reporters tried to process the prodigious spin that had been laid on them. In front of him, the safety net of adoring fans enveloped him."

Punishment enough? Sign your name a wrong score on your card and you are eliminated (DQed). Golf's a *****, but its still a game of rules.

I don't disagree that this is a bad look for Phil , my issue is with your choice of using the negatively loaded term cheating.

He played a ball while it was moving for all to see. The tournament official correctly assessed a 2 stroke penalty. I wouldn't have had an issue if he was disqualified, but he wasn't. Although his actions may have been calculated they weren't deceptive (He knew the world was watching). So why the need to play morality police and label him a cheater?

Morality police, LMAO! John Daley did the same thing at the 1999 US Open and was publicly castigated. Ian Poulter tweeted that Phil needed to get a set of balls. You don't get mulligans at this level. It's not a big deal if your a weekend golfer or you have no integrity.
In golf, deceit is cheating.

This is the main reason I'm watching the US Open. Go Paulina er ah Dustin.

You're making my point ;). Who did he decieve? If the deceit doesn't fit then you must acquit.

I'm not a Mickelson fan, but have been sensitive to the liberal use of the "cheating" label since 07. Crucify him for being a selfish poor sport if you must.

Anyways...just made some popcorn, looks like it's going to be a great finish.

16 is a monster.

Almost everyone I’ve ever known that’s been seriously into golf has been a stuck up, entitled douche. Not everyone but almost.

Golf is a game of self-policing. Do you call a stroke when the ball moves? May depend on the situation, or an individual may be in denial. Phil actions were that of a weekend golfer (few will get that). You can overlook it, but his peers will not.

Koepka's gf Jena...and I looked that up) is pretty nice too, even if she forgot the disappearing dress.
Yea she's a cutie.

Dufner's ex is still my favorite. She was wild. Every PGA WAG funtion she'd get smashed and hit on all the guys on tour.

She was chaos

Highly amused to see NE fans of all people calling that cheating and saying he should have been DQ'd. He didn't hide anything and he got the penalty the rules specify for what he did.

What's next? Calling it "cheating" if you line someone up with an eligible number in an ineligible position?

Or calling it "cheating" when you mug and hammer receivers when you know there's no way the refs will call them all?

Or (to use a non-NE example), calling it "cheating" when a receiving team member stands OOB and reaches out onto the field of play to touch a kicked-off ball and create a kickoff-OOB penalty on the kicking team?

This team's coaching staff is all about pushing the rules to the legal limit -- and I love them for doing it! Just like the rules say Mickelson gets a 2-stroke penalty for doing that. If he believes the 2-stroke penalty for doing that will cost him fewer strokes than letting it come to a stop, more power to him for doing what he did. If the USGA, etc. don't like it, they can change the rule going forward.

Phil's action was bush league. For some, it seems like a good strategy with football analogies. I don't think we will see professional golfers stopping rolling balls as a strategy. Although, wouldn't be surprised to see members here taking advantage of it this weekend.

It's a trust fund sport like lacrosse.

That's your opinion. My opinion is golf great to watch.
Actually I was just joking around. I use to watch it years but I really don't watch much network TV except for football and basketball. I have kind of enjoyed read what is happening from you guys in this thread.

Thats cool. Yea I dont watch much network TV either. Sports, Netflix, Food Network, Travel Channel, Golf Channel is pretty much it for me.

I used to take my golf pretty serious but I'm not good enough anymore to be serious about it.
