56th Overall Draft Pick: DUKE DAWSON (merged)

He’s a slot corner. A little bit of research wouldn’t hurt you before posting.

I'm not even sure why people who clearly don't follow college football even bother posting at this time of the year. Just sit back and read.

He really is not undersized and 197 lbs at that height is jacked.

You know who else is pretty much the same size and weight? Chris Harris jr. And he’s regarded as one of if not the best slot corner in the game.

You have 3 groups of clueless fans that post on draft day.

1. They don't know college players. That's me and which is why you and other's info has been very helpful

2. They don't know the pro game or understand how a specific collegiate player fits an NFL team's scheme. I have no idea if Dawson is good or not but it makes total sense why they took him. It was a need.

3. They just like to *****.

I agree. I think we will see fewer 3 safety sets this year if Dawson plays up to his potential. Good slot corners are damn important and we really had a hole there when Ryan left that contributed to getting beat so often in the SB. This is a low key move that might keep Jordan Richards off the field (and maybe even the 53). Similarly, unless Cyrus does a 180 in camp and shows up confident (what killed him in y1) and healthy (y2) this will most probably be the end of line for him.

To me not being able to find a true slot CB (or star LB/S for most of the season until finally they gave M.Flowers a better chance) was the #1 issue of Pats roster building after Ryan left . and even Ryan was possibly not the true slot guy. Most people were *****ing about our LB play but the lack of true slot defenders defending outside line and covering crossing routes was the key issue IMO that made everyone in the 2nd line of D look worse. So going for a natural slot CB over speedy undersized LB who can't play the box (like most in this draft) was pretty obvious way to go esp. after re-signing M.Flowers. The fact that they resigned him for only 2018 suggests they will have to be looking for 2019 options for star position but the guys that will probably go undrafted (f.e. Oluokun from Yale) are similar prospects to the ones they were selected yesterday (O'Daniel). Or they might just wait for next FA (pretty cheap option) or trade a low rounder for another one like M.Flowers.

Did they think this guy could help them more than Lorenzo Carter? Or Harold Landry (I know he didn't fit their scheme, but blue chip talent)? Malik Jefferson?

Obviously. And they were not the only ones...
Also: they are already adding Rivers, K.Davis and Lee to some extent from last year.
Last years third rounders like Rivers, Willis, Basham etc. would probably go in the 1st round this year. And next year you have some real front 7 talent possibly 2 rounds deep..

Pretty much why I don’t post much on the draft. I don’t watch much college football and I certainly don’t study the players. I watched some film on Wynn and posted on him because I know something about OL play.

I think they like Dawson as a player and that need really wasn’t as important. The Pats target specific, lesser players more than most teams. Often it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

I'm the same way. I just don't have the cycles to watch on Saturdays and am clueless on the players. I take in the bowl games. That's it.

Only reason I feel somewhat educated on Michel is because I watched 3 UofG games. Love that kid.

The Patriots don't have to match up Patrick Chung against a slot receiver in the future.

Hint Hint Nelson Agholar Super Bowl LII

A defensive tactical debacle. The classic knock-on effect.

Duke is taller than Mike Hughes and Alexander. People just love to complaint about nothing. CB over 5'10 is not undersized. Please pretend to know more than the staffs.

Duke is also taller and bigger than Butler.

I'm not a fan of BB's tracking record of DB's in this part of the draft and not sure I would go with CB but I'm OK with the pick, I guess there was no safety or LB left on their board with a 2nd round grade.

What I'm not a fan is the moves they made, trading back twice and then moving up and giving one of those picks they got in the previous trade. I mean in the end I think we didn't get any real advantage, just stay put and make the picks at 41 and then 63. They passed on Josh Jackson, Christian Kirk, Goederth a lot of players they could have selected at 41. Or stay put after the trades and grab Dawson later. Didn't like this trade up.

He'll translate to the slot early on in his rookie career and should help push Cyrus the Virus to either get his act together or off the roster. I liked Dawson at Florida. He's a very strong, aggressive (sometimes overly so) press man specialist. Receivers in the SEC had a lot of trouble getting off of his jams. I was surprised they went that route last night (I wanted Carter or Reid), but corner is a need. It should also allow them to get away from the disastrous big nickel that they got killed in last year (and decided it was a good idea to use in the Super Bowl).

Was the big nickel the disaster, or was it Richards? I also seem to remember one safety (Chung? Richards?) playing slot CB which wouldn't really count as big nickel, just regular with a guy woefully out of his element.

I like this pick. He is feisty and tough and competitive. He seems to have good hands and good coverage skills. He gets beat now and then but has quick recovery speed. He has a knack for knocking the ball out and he is a sure tackler; he would make an excellent free safety also.

Ever since I gave up Saturday football viewing for the greater good of the family (freaking selfish family) I've relied on reading the draft forum to prep me for the draft. A few years back when I was exceptionally busy and only had time to glance at the draft forum, I went into the draft not really knowing any players and with just the basic hope that they wouldn't take the cripple with the 2 bum knees and a QB with their first two picks...

I will be the first to say I know nothing about the individual players. Have I heard of them. YES. But do I have all the scouting info on them that the Pats do. Come on none of us do. When we draft a player I bio the crap out of it. Although we have some posters that do a lot of homework on these guys. They only know what they read or a few video clips. Have fun guys with your homework knowledge. It’s appreciated and entertaining. But when you are saying we must take this guy in the 2nd round and he falls to the 6th round. Then chastise the Pats because you had their pick in the 2nd rated as a fifth rounder and you are *****ing about it. Then I guess your expertise is questionable.

I just can’t fathom why BB would pass on Josh Jackson CB at 41 and then trade up for Dawson later on? In my opinion, Jackson has number 1 CB potential

BBs track record of drafting defensive backs in round 2 is abysmal

Ty Wheatley
Jordan Richards
Tavon Wilson
Darius Butler
Cyrus Jones
Ras IR Dowling

Im hoping passing on Jackson for Dawson will be the right move for this team

To be quite frank, Dawson may not be as
“naturally talented” as Jackson. However, Dawson is MUCH more technically sound, experienced and versatile than Jackson. I like the pick.
