PHOTO: Drew Bledsoe Reflects Back On 1993 Draft Anniversary

Robert Alvarez

On April 25th 1993, the historically bad fortunes of the New England Patriots franchise shifted to good following the selection of Washington State University quarterback Drew Bledsoe with the first overall pick.

I cannot freaking believe that was 25 years ago.

Back when I lived off campus and spent an entire day watching the draft. Hammered.

That was a good day.

It turned around when they left and B.B. and Brady took their places.
I don't know about that. Parcells and Bledsoe turned them around and made them relevant and contenders again.

But Belichick and Brady took them one step further and made them Champions

But I don’t see parcels and Bledsoe as a harbinger of B.B. and Brady but more of a fun distraction until the real success came.

I can agree with that - it's probably amplified by how bad they were prior to that, but the other half that I wonder about was the change free agent-wise after Parcells got here. He brought in a lot of his guys and I think the tenor from the outside-in changed, allowing them to surround Drew with talent with guys who weren't afraid to sign here once it became clear they were going to be competitive for the future. It's too bad it was only for three years and that it ended the way it did, but the memories from that span, as you mentioned, are fun to look back on, especially knowing how it turned out once Belichick came back and turned them into a dynasty :D

Eh, from a marketing standpoint, there was an impact but to act like he took the team to unprecedented success is just wrong. He had losing seasons year 1, year 3 and year 8 and the teams got worse every year from his 5th through 8th seasons.

Four years from 89-92 are the "historically bad fortunes", before that, the Patriots were 113-83 with 5 playoff appearances from 76-88. They had never won the big game but neither did Bledsoe. As a starter, Bledsoe was 63-60, 3-3 in the playoffs with a 5-12 TD to INT ratio.

Prior to drafting Bledsoe, the Patriots earned a mere six playoff berths from their founding in 1960 to 1992. Winning four games.

Up to 1966 only 2 teams made the playoffs. Up to 1969, only 4. Up to 1977, only 8. From 1978-1990, 10 teams made it. So 6 times from 1960 to 1992 and 5 times from 1976-92 when less teams made the playoffs. Three of Bledsoe's playoff appearances were through the wild card with expanded playoffs

With Bledsoe under center beginning in 1993, the Patriots, who were just three seasons removed from a 1-15 season, returned to respectability and qualified for the playoffs four times over the next six years, including an appearance in Super Bowl XXXI. Bledsoe would earn three Pro Bowl selections in that span.

4 interceptions during that SB appearance. Also lost twice in the wild card round.

The drafting of Bledsoe, coupled with Robert Kraft purchasing the team a year later from James Orthwein, saved the franchise from relocating to St. Louis and ensured that New England would have a football team for years to come.

How did the drafting of Bledsoe save the team from moving?

Since 1994, the Patriots have sold out every home game for 24 consecutive seasons.

Might of had something to do with the Brady/Belichick years as well.

You are not necessarily off course however during the early 1990's it was impossible to predict what we have had for 18 years would actually happen. Getting to 10-6 and in the playoffs was only a dream. Defeating the Rams for the first SuperBowl win was pure joy.

Bledsoe made the Patriots a relevant team during a period where everything they did was wrong.

The Patriots have always been relevant since 1959.

The loser NFL did their best to unjustly disparage the AFL, and then after the merger, the Patriots.

The hiring of Fairbanks made the Patriots contenders, permanently.

I followed the team as intently and intensely from '89-'92 as I ever did; the potential for success was evident to lots of others besides Bob Kraft.

Orthwein deserves credit for the Parcells hire. Local fans immediately jumped on board because Parcells brought instant credibility.

But the endless Patriots-bashing by opponents, the league including Orthwein himself and the media had zero basis, except that the Sullivans' financial house of cards finally, inevitably came crashing down.

Four lousy seasons does not come close to, for example, the 25 that Green Bay had between Lombardi and Favre.

Bledsoe arrival was crucial

i remember that after his arrival i was confident that he was going to do very well in New England

he created further motivation in a 'difficult' period
