Cooks traded to Rams for 23 overall pick

I wonder what Bill feels about the likes of Mayfield/Lamar Jackson?

We have not drafted a 1st round WR in Belichick's entire tenure.
I was amazed when in 1984 the Pats used the number one pick in the entire draft on a wide receiver, Irving Fryar. It has only happened four times in the history of the NFL.

Dorsett can do what Cooks does for substantially less money, guys like Riley McCarron can make the team now.

Our GM is wicked smart...

True. When Cookie got hurt in the Super Bowl, Dorsett came in and filled his shoes seamlessly. Brady threw like 500 yards and Dorsett was hauling in tons of those and took the top off secondary defense big time.

Patriots are in a good position to take a quarterback like Lamar Jackson and still fill needs with a top-tier talent at the back end of the 1st round and in the 2nd. That makes me happy.

I liked Cooks a lot but he did some things that were maddening, like the ill-fated hurdle attempt and running backwards in the Super Bowl. He was a top-tier WR2, not a WR1, but he'll be paid like a WR1. The Patriots got a solid year out of him and actually returned a higher pick than they lost. I can't complain about the trade, though it certainly makes the return on something like the Garoppolo trade even more of a headscratcher.

The WR corps isn't in a great spot, though. Edelman will be back but he's getting older. Hogan is a good but not great WR2. Maybe they're confident Mitchell will be healthy. Maybe they like Dorsett for some reason. Maybe they'll draft a DJ Moore or Anthony Miller. Maybe they'll pick up Jordan Matthew's or Jeremy Maclin. Maybe they'll trade for Beckham. Who knows, but the current slate of WRs do leave me nervous.
Jackson?
What?

Another Cooks basher.

He traded him b/c he wasn't going to pay him $14m a year.

He would have if he was worth it.

Which he isn't.

Because we saw that all season long.

Three observations on your three observations:

1. While the Rams are building a "so-called" All-Star team, BB and the Patriots are retooling a roster to make yet, another run at the Superbowl.

2. Hard not to like this trade. The Pats never would've paid Cooks what he was looking for after this year and we just got back our 1st that we traded for him last year.

3. If you think BB is trolling Brady and "sour" about having to trade JG, then you haven't been paying attention and either don't know sh!t about the Patriots or just another troll.

Haven't seen much "retooling". That implies they've added quality pieces to replace guys who are gone

They're much worse at WR. Worse at RB. Much worse at LT. The offense is relying upon injury plagued or old players and young/mid career busts to develop.

The D is marginally better but not in the places where it was exposed last year (LB and interior rush). Like the offense, it's relying on injured guys getting/staying healthy.

It's still a very good roster but definitely worse at key positions and the chances of Edelman, Gronkowski and Hightower being healthy and as good as needed seems slim to me.

I get why they moved Cooks. He's not worth his expected 2019 salary and it's a good return. But this team has taken several steps back in talent and draft picks are unlikely to fill those gaps.

Still plenty of time to build the roster but the team is definitely worse on paper than it was last year.

Yeah..trade a guy because we cound't afford him next year..to get a head case and to pay that guy even more
Mentioned a trade with Bengals today and Cooks and A.J. Green. Anybody thinking Green?

No he would not have. Bill would never pay a WR top money. Ever

That guy has been first on a lot of stuff before.

Don't even want to hear that. Rumors about Chubb would make me pay attention though. Realistically would be fine with a LT and a CB with the picks we have now. Another Jones/Hightower draft would be okay too.

I would be dissapointed if they drafted an LT at 23. I am not impressed with this tackle class. They need a LB.

I know the team needs a QB and a LT but with 5 picks in the top 100 if 3 of those players arent in the front 7 I'm gonna staple my head to the carpet
DT - Shelton, Brown, Valentine, Lawrence, Butler
DE - Clayborn, Flowers, Wise, Rivers, Grissom, Lee, Davis

The picks in this years draft needs to focus on defense - This team knows Brady is not going to be around for much longer and the inevitable decline from aging may come anyway - When Brady is gone it will be up to the defense to take over and keeping this team competitive,we likely won't see another QB like Brady carrying the team on his back like he did in NE - maybe not one like him for the rest of our lives.

So he traded for him last year known he was gonna trade him this year.

Either way he wasnt long term for bill. I'm fine with it. He didnt shine here like some said he would.

How long before the BS (Boston Sports) Talk mediots start the "Brady complains to Kraft about losing Cooks" rumors?
Maybe Cooks was not on the TB12 Method?

Eric Decker on line 1?

Watch them sign Decker on the cheap...lol.
Great signing. He's always killed us. He's younger than Edelman and Dola.
Had 50 catches on a run first conservative Team. Red Zone threat unlike Cooks. Can play slot or outside. Not a smurf at 6'3".
Best player for the Titans in the Championship game.
Don't sleep on Mercedes Lewis to the Past.

I think Bill thought there was a chance he could keep Cooks but as the WR market developed he gave up.

Cooks was very good here. I think the cap space and the 1st rounder is more important than a WR1 when the team has a ton of weapons

If by "ton" you mean one. You are correct.
