I respectfully disagree on some level, Darryl. While they made it to 2/3 past SBs (or 3/4, really) the missed, injured, and stolen picks had not yet caught up to them. I think we saw that lack of depth at all three levels of the defense at times last season, particularly in the bookend losses of the season where the defense gave up 40+. Had we not wasted top picks such as Cyrus Jones, Easley, stolen 1st/4th, Jordan Richards as a 2nd, Grissom, etc things would be a lot different. Add in the unfortunate injuries to high round guys like Rivers, Valentine, Mitchell, and Garcia, and you can easily see how this has set the future of the team back a bit.

Even the hits such as Mason, Thuney, and Flowers (and Cooks, since he cost us a 1st + 3rd) will be difficult to keep due to the high double digit millions per year that will come with a second pact. We can reasonably hope to retain 1-2 of them.

I think the draft is very important due to the salary cap structure and the need for young, cheap players. Not only do you need that youth and speed at some positions, but you also need those cheaper players to offset your more expensive stars and round out your 90-to-53 man roster. This upcoming draft is going to be key in how the future of the team looks, as will the health of some of the other recent higher picks, but I do believe right or wrong, that the draft misses have caught up to us a bit.

Seem to remember reading something yesterday about how all the players drafted in a specific period of time (2010-2015??) by the Giants were no longer with that team, the reality is that the draft is one way to build a team and often BB and his krewe choose another..

Then you look at a team like the Browns, perennial bottom dwellers and a team who picks high, who should be loaded and a top tier team.. pretty much the same for the Jets..

The "draft misses" catch up to every team.. IMO that method of team building is overrated.. every team overestimates the ability of the players they draft... one of the things I felt last year for this team was the injuries, the loss of Hightower, Edelman was dramatic and long lasting then there were other injuries that impacted depth; McClellin, Valentine and Mitchell.

Not sure how you can include Cyrus Jones in your list as he was on IR last year..

Always felt the draft was an overrated way to "team build" for the Patriots..

We see this one a bit differently, that’s all.

I think the draft is vital to the success of the team due to cheap rookie pacts, which is what Belichick has built the team around due to his excellent management of the salary cap. It’s key to the team building process so that we have enough cheap talent at many of the positions. Guys like Andrews, Thuney, Mason (previously, Solder and Cannon) all provided prime examples of this. As a matter of fact, Belichick is cautious when handing out those second contracts here because he often finds similar replacements via the draft for much cheaper costs, which is why we see so many FAs leave all of the time.

Also, I included Cyrus Jones because he’s sucked (5 fumbles in 10 games) and been injured so far, therefore bringing back almost zero return heading into his third year, and that’s if he makes it out of camp. Thus far, he certainly belongs in the “high round miss” category.

Brady, Gronk, Hernandez, Edelman, Seymour, Hightower, McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Light, Solder, Bruschi, Law, McGinest, Wilfork, Mankins, Glenn, Coates, Collins, Thuney, Mason, Warren, Flowers..

The list goes on and on and on in terms of key SB playing members who were drafted here and some will obviously go into the hall of fame.

Free agents are nice side pieces to throw into the mix, but they’re much more expensive and the team is still very much built by the draft.
