Don’t know about their cap situation but I would think the saints would give up their 1 for Gronk with assurances he’s willing to play. That teams window is now.

The Saints have just a tad over $2M in cap space at the moment. The Niners have a bunch left, though.

Anyone who would offer a second, when the patriots rejected it and came back with a 1 and 3 would be silly to not pay that. Gronk is worth at least that and likely more.
If Gronk was 25 and locked in for multiple years sure.

Niners prob wouldn’t part with 9 overall. I would hope with any deal with SF that kittle is part of it.

Why is there pages of talk about trading Gronk? The Patriots window to win their 6th SB is in the next few years. They got a lot better shot with the best TE ever and one of the best players in the game then whoever they would get with a 2nd rounder.

I would much rather see the key people in the organization: Kraft, Belichick, Brady, Gronk hatch out the tensions that exist then trade one of the best players ever, weaken the team, & piss off Brady even further. Number 6 should be the priority.

First, I want Gronk to stay. More relevant, I want Gronkto WANT to stay.

hmm

piss off Brady? Does Brady want to keep Gronk if he wants out?

The issue is whether Gronk wants to be "free" like Danny. Presumably, any trade would be discussed with Gronk. A trade would be worthless if Gronk didn't cooperate (for example by sitting out and considering retirement. Gerona may WANT to go to SF.

That's Gronk's cap hit on the Patriots. A new team won't be responsible for past signing bonuses. Gronk's cap hits in 2018 and 2019 for a team that trades for him would be $8.9M and $10M respectively. A damn bargain in this market. The difference would be dead money on the Patriots cap.
100% correct. I looked at the wrong column.

A very good bargain indeed.

Not sure who this marquis rivers is but I’m hoping we bring back LaAdrian duckwalk at around that same price.

Ask your local 50s nostalgia buff what this means; LaAdrian D.A.

Didn't have the injury history Gronk did.

BTW Bill totally fleeced a senile Al Davis....

The other thing is that Seymour was traded at the end of 2009 camp for a first round pick in 2011. The Patriots had to play 2 full seasons before reaping the draft pick rewards (which as an aside was Solder, for whom we expect to "receive" around pick 100 in the 2019 draft keeping this chain alive). This would be the equivalent of trading Gronk today for a 1st round pick in 2020. Not that we want Gronk traded, but I think when we're talking about 1st round picks we're wishing 2018 but expecting 2019. Not 2020.

Seymour had one or two all pro seasons in Oakland

Sure. Sey was still playing at a high-level. I'd argue he wasn't as good as he was from 02-06 but he was still very good.

With that said in 3 good years they paid a a mid 1st rd pick and $54m for him and never went over .500. Not smart.

I'm not talking about trading Gronk

I'm talking about what a team should logically give up.

Gronk and Sey play different positions and had different injury histories

There's an infinitesimal chance that any team even considers parting with a 1st-rounder for Gronk. Not even the Browns on a bender.

Sorry if I wasn't clear -- I was agreeing with you. Just pointing out that the argument "they got a 1st rounder for Seymour" is technically correct, but in addition to your comments about the player situation, it also has some context problems. It would have been the equivalent of getting a 3rd round pick in the 2009 draft or a 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft. Applying to Gronk, the equivalent of a 3rd rounder in 2018 or a 2nd rounder in 2019. If that's all we got, most fans would think the Pats got fleeced. But that's effectively what they got for Seymour.

Oh he turns 29 that soon? Yea no way he fetches a 1st.

I think a team on the cusp would trade a 2nd for him. Even if he has a 80/1000/10TD season for said team and they go to the SB and a couple more ok to good years then it was worth it.

Gronkowski's still worth a first rounder. His production when healthy's still there. A second rounder would be a major steal.

People saying cooks's not worth a first rounder are insane. The guy was starting to click Brady when he got hurt. I expect another 1000 yard season next year. He's better than overrated Sammy Watkins.

Ah sorry. Yep- I saw it the same way as you did.

This is essentially a Cooks situation. A team gets a top player with 2 reasonable years left on his contract. A low first or early second seems right.

The big open question is whether Gronk really wants to play for 2 years. If so, WE should keep him. If he is likely to play for only 0 or 1 year, the situation is different.

Except for the back surgeries, arm surgery where he still wears that protection and the ACL. Lets just ignore the concussion because he has no history of it. Also lets ignore that weird retirement rumor.

One more bad landing or badly timed hit on the back and his career could be over. That is why I dont see anyone giving out a first round pick. Too much risk involved in terms of health.
