I strongly disagree.

If we franchise Cooks next year, his 2017 and 2018 are irrelevant. We will decide whether he is worth $18M to us or not.

Yes, I agree that 2017 was a huge bargain, but not as large as you suggest. You have to decide how much a 1st round draft choice is worth. Also, Cooks will be a huge bargain in 2018.
I would be shocked if the Pats franchised Cooks, hell I’d be shocked if he was on the team in 2019 in any fashion. I’d love to see them sign him long term at 12 mill, but with scrubs getting 15 mill, he’s gonna want a ton of $. Get the most out of him this year.

For an expected starter, that's impressive value. He might not be the best guy out there, but considering some of the other contracts we've seen, that's a steal.

Reality of insane difference between Day 1 and Week 2 of FA. I like both Waddle and Fleming went to W2..

Can have one today if they get their feet off the desk and call Howie Rosen to get Mychall Kendricks for a low pick. We still have enough CAP for him.
D W Toys
That ship has sailed

Can we get Jordan Hicks?
With their cap situation, the Eagles can’t really be getting rid of good, cheap players. It looks like they’ll get rid of Kendricks and then go with Hicks, Bradham, and either Corey Nelson or a rookie as the top three, with a combined cap hit lower than Kendricks’ alone.

Can we get Jordan Hicks?
I doubt it. Before the injury he was very profitable and for sure Eagles would be count on him this season. If Kendricks is in a trade block it will be a slim chance to get him. Of course money talks but I suppose we are talking about a fair price.

And apart from priority signings they do it every year.

This is where trust into your pro scouting department comes in. You can invest all the money you want into building advanced scouting but when push comes to shove does your GM have the balls to trust that the guy in W2 of FA will do 80-90% of the job of the massively overpaid guy on day 1 or not ? Do you even know the exact role you want a player to play or do you overpay for players that "can do it all" ?

That is where the value is in FA. Knowing the exact roles you want to fill and find players who are undervalued overall but can do exactly those jobs..

Offer him vet minimum and see if he has anything of value left or at least can be used to leverage Allen into a restructure. Between the two I'd rather have Allen who has already shown an understanding for our offense. But vet min vs. 5m cap hit is a substantial difference.

If he wants more than vet min then **** him..

Looks like LB day today. Mid-low tier LBs starting to go. And w McClellin out and only 4 LBs on the roster (well 5 if you include Grigsby) . Pats should add a vet or two.

Looking at M.Flowers, Casillas, Worillow . Galette, Barwin, Bowan etc. still out there, daddy Derrick Johnson was still productive last season, Cushing and Timmons waiting for redemption..
