Patriots release McClellin

No but it opens up a roster spot for a better player

At this stage though? I don't agree it does. The 90th guy we'll bring into camp has no shot at being a better player than Richards, who at least has ST value.

I meant on the 53.

To take that further I would cut him now.

I am so done with his bad angles and abysmal coverage ability

Ah, okay, my misread on that then. I would agree with your comment on the 53. I still wouldn't cut him now, as there are spots on the team for ST's only players, and at least we know he can do that if there are injuries. But I would be disappointed if someone with higher defensive upside doesn't win the job from him in the end.

You didn't misread. I didn't state it explicitly.

Agree. Cutting him now does not make sense. I just don't want him on the team even if he was playing for free.

^ That's my whole thing with Richards. He is taking up a spot, regardless of the $$, that could be used for someone potentially better. Not to mention we have 2 safeties on the practice squad. It would be nice to give one of them a shot. There is no way they are worse. Plus, their contracts are probably cheap too.

I thought Richards was a player for philly in disguise

He must have more damning pictures than Bequette. Not only does he continually make the team, he gets playing time on defense.

Which makes one wonder is the game passing BB by?? I think when BB Scouted Richards he fell in love with his intelligence as a human being...but that didn't translate to Football intelligence on the playing Field.

My purely wild speculation is that Richards is one of those players that impresses in every area leading up to a game, and then just lacks the athleticism or "it" factor to excel when it actually counts (at least on defense). Given how much stock BB puts into practice performance, I think he's just stuck in one of those loops where he keeps thinking, "Okay, NOW he's got it" and it just never pans out.

...or the man who signed him to the contract.

Good God, why are so many people acting like McClellin signed a $40 million guaranteed contract and his signing set them the team back a decade? I simply don't get the hatred. He had some quality moments but didn't fully live up to his contract. News flash: that describes half the players in the NFL.

It's a goddamn mystery to me how this kid takes great angles and shows good coverage ability in practice but craps his pants in games.

Different level of intensity, could be overthinking once in the game, who knows. Could also be an element where his ability to recognize things works exceptionally well when it's people he's practicing against every day (hence, looks great), but give him new players and his lack of pop really stands out. At this point, I'll believe anything if it explains him.

But that is still something that shows up eventually. 1000 practices. Dozens of games.

I think Bill just likes the kid and feels he's earned the runway.

I can't see him surviving this TC. No way.
