Receiver Sammy Watkins leaving Rams to sign free-agent contract with Kansas City Chiefs

I know KC is desperate for WRs, but this is crazy. Thirty million guaranteed. If Cooks thinks he is getting anywhere near that I will happily drive him to the airport myself.

In 15 games last year as the number two receiver behind the legendary Cooper Kupp, Watkins ranked 63 in receiving yards with just 593 yards and 101 in receptions with only 39 catches. And he is now (as far as I know) the highest paid WR in football. What the hell is going on in KC?

Dumb ass contracts like this and Jarvis Landry getting tagged at 16.2m don’t help our cause in trying to keep Cooks, that’s for sure. I’m just as baffled as you are, at least for this particular player, anyway.

It may even hurt us in terms of Gronk playing, because while he’s not officially a receiver, he’s still our number one receiving weapon and produces much more than a guy like Watkins.

In all honesty Sammy has every tool to be a outstanding WR. Injuries have gotten the best of the kid.

Cooks's actually worth it. Idk much about Watkins. Cooks's a better wr

That may be true, but you don't often see teams paying this kind of money for potential. He's had 4 years to show us what he's got. This kind of performance does not look like it's worth $30 Million guaranteed: Sammy Watkins Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Also, he appears to drop a lot of throws. In his best year (2015), he caught 62.5% of the balls thrown his way, earning him 117th overall - not that great. Last year, his 55.7% ranked him 157th in the league and he was even worse at 166th in 2016 (53.8%).

In Gronk's worst year, he caught 59.1%.

This is how I know which teams are building for continuity and which are sure to flame out quickly...

Teams are doing this on purpose just to screw us over. Or are they truly this dumb? So they pay this reciever more than Tom Brady makes. I’d rather just let B.B. make a team out of k Mart workers, fast food slingers and a few udfas. Go 12-4 and have a shot at the bowl.
High priced talent doesn’t work apparently.

Look at Odell Beckham,

Catch rate isn't drop rate. Deep ball receivers tend to have lower catch rates, especially if they play with quarterbacks with popgun arms. Anything 60% or higher is generally very good for a guy who plays mostly at the intermediate and deep level like Watkins.

Jared Goff has a pretty weak arm and Watkins mostly served as a distraction in the Rams offense away from the short to intermediate routes run by Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. His best games came during the few times he was healthy with Tyrod Taylor, who has a strong arm and was willing to uncork it. I think Mahomes is going to be an exceptional quarterback, so he's going to a great situation.

My personal problem with Watkins is that he's a bit weak at the catch point and gets knocked off his routes easily. He's not Julio Jones, but you have to pay up for a player with WR1 talent, and that's what Watkins is. The Chiefs don't have anybody close to that. The Patriots are going to have to pay Cooks, who has his own set of problems but is every bit as talented as Watkins, should they want to keep him.

I like Cooks, but there is no way in hell he is worth 17 million per year to the Pats. No way Bill is paying that either.

Catch % doesn’t mean drops though.
The biggest function of catch % is how long the throws are.

Mahomes and Hunt are on their rookie deals for 3 more years......Hill is on a rookie deal for 2 more years

spending this money on watkins is insignificant at the moment

or put it this way......coradelle patterson has about the same cap hit as Kareem Hunt, Tyreke Hill, and Patrick Mahomes combined

I just can't see who looks at Sammy Watkins and says "That's our guy. That's the one thing we need to get us over the top. Let's pay him stoopit money and we will be all set."

Am I missing something? Does he have game I am not respecting?

I know, that's why I said, "Looks like...". Yards per throw is harder to screen on too, especially if you want to factor in "Flacco yards".

But even a simple screen on WR's with the longest YPC, he's not up near the top. I looked at WR's with YPC>14, he's still 16 out of 32. Although Cooks only comes in at #14 (57%).

YOu have to chart the throws to see what length of throw is. And you have to view the throws to see what is wr and what is QB.

You can’t compare welker with 80% of his targets within 5 yards coming from brady to aj green if many of his throws are 20+ yards downfield and coming from Andy Dalton.

Cooks is a good example. His 57% is not a negative given the ratio of deep throws.

Mahommes will be throwing bombs and could be a fantasy football dream next season

It's no wonder Gronk is supposedly looking for more money. He see's an offensive player who hasn't done 1/2 as much as himself getting $17m a year. Just a ridiculous contract.

In 2007 Randy Moss caught 61.3% of the balls thrown to him, and had a low y/rec than Watkins. Good thing BB finally came to his senses and caught the jag 3 years later.
