Oft-injured (this year), aging special teamer who has been paid premium dollars for skill + intangibles over the past several years ....why is this a surprise?
BB is straight business. He'll probably trade D. McCourty the day his twin shows up

BB gave slaters dough to nate ebner.

He wants to keep playing, he can play here for what BB offers, or he can go. Draft another special teamer in 7 or sign an udfa

“He is 32 years old, has missed 9 games in the past 2 seasons and had more tackles in 2015 than he had in the last 2 seasons combined.” - Brady6
All good points. They also did just give Ebner a decent payday too. I wouldn't be totally shocked if they moved on from Slater given the reasons above but it would still seem weird just based on the fact that it's Slater.

DC9A0AF3-959C-41A3-85AF-260FF5B72E81.jpeg The stats do seem to indicate a decline. Having said that, I hadn’t even clicked on this thread before this afternoon, because I just assumed that he would be back. As an aside, 24 special teams tackles in 2011 is crazy (I don’t recall him playing in the safety that year).

When it's your turn, it's your turn.

Bill traded Vrabel and Mankins, and let Wilfork walk. It's the way it goes.

This locker room is falling apart.... well someone has to say it ;)

It’d be the rare player/ team meeting where the player is far more knowledgeable about the subject matter at hand than the team.

My guess is perhaps Slater wants a little more dough and Bill didn't want to give it, and told him to talk to another team or two and see what his market's like, then come back.

It is a little odd, though. Not many guys exemplify the prototypical "Patriot" over the last several years more than Slater does. Has been given/nominated for several different honors by the team IIRC. Weird.
I agree with your first point, which is why I disagree with the second. Don't think it's weird, think it's very much getting a sense of what the market will bear and then they'll talk.

I think he's a key guy to keep in the locker room.

Struggling to understand why people think this is weird. Pats offered X. He wants X +. BB says go find your market. He's doing just that.

Troy Brown did the same thing.

Thinking he is exiting because of some kind of cultural imbalance in the locker room is speculation

I think it would be weird if he was asking for a lot of money, or if he wasn't but BB wanted to pay vet minimum or something like that. I'm thinking it's probably more of the first thing, I assume they do want him back but not if he's gonna cost too much, considering the things others have mentioned - age, injuries etc.

I am beginning to think BB will prefer to restart with a fresh set of players. I think his act is wearing on a few vets who have been here for so long. Losing Jimmy last year probably has messed up his plans. I am guessing his preference would have been for Brady to retire, he reboots with Jimmy and his stories and anecdotes don't bore those players who can't learn a new trick.

At this point if he stays with the Patriots it would be for a leadership need.

Gotta be just setting the market. If they can stay in the ballpark, he’ll remain here. Too big of a leader to let go. Belichick is shrewd but he’s not dumb.

Everyone is expendable.

Even oft injured 32 year old ST demons.

I'm sure there is a 1 year deal on the table for him here.
