Colts just released him:

Obviously we've already made moves in free agency - but he could potentially be a big add. He played well for the Colts last year.

Good player but I'd rather have Vinny Curry.

They released him cause they're changing to the 4-3 and he's a better fit for the 3-4 which is why the Giants got rid of him in the first place.

Why can’t guys just play either 3-4 or 4-3? I understand being better at understanding one more than the other. Like with Gilmore not fitting in with zone but come on! Why so many one dimensional players all the time?
Some teams used to play man, zone, 4-3, etc with the same guys

Why can't DL players not just play OL? I mean its all the same right? Fat guy stopping another fat guy from moving..

IDK. The Pats play man-coverage concepts, zone-coverage concepts, pattern-matching coverage concepts, 4-3/one-gap concepts, and 3-4/two-gap concepts.

Often all on the same play.

The Titans end up paying Sylvester Williams about $8M for one year of service ...
... 15 games, 20 total tackles.

The Colts did a bit better, paying Hankins $10.5M for one year ...
... 15 games, 44 total tackles, 2 sacks, 3 PD.

I say we sign as many players as we can. Only caveat is that they fit the system and come as relative bargains. Throwing spaghetti at the wall type of strategy. All of our next indespensible stars will come out of that grp.

Right! It’s not brain surgery,

I’m not suggesting guys should be capable of playing both offense and defense but look, the offensive line plays several schemes and different concepts. It seems a d line guy could play more than one friggen formation for 8 mill a year. We can’t pay every monkey in the zoo to sing just one song

Sometimes it seems like they aren’t playing any kind of concept. They look like mindless animals running loose on the field lol

In the super bowl I kept yelling “ oh that’s right, don’t make any ****ing effort to tackle anyone d . If god wanted them down, they’d be down already jeeze.

I’m hoping that this is a better get down on defense than last year. Even tho they played good most of the year, they really screwed the pooch in the end and the beginning.

Yeah, well, with the players they had available to play in 2017, they had difficulty executing most everything. In spite of that, they looked pretty decent for most of the season against relatively simple offensive schemes - even against the Titans and Jags schemes (which weren't all that complex, actually). The Philly offense was just a bridge too far for them.

When the Pats defensive schemes are properly executed (and even sometimes when they're not), they are very effective at keeping opposing offenses guessing (and guessing wrong). But, that only got them to the SB (which isn't half-bad, really).

The good news is that Wise and Adam Butler, Eric Lee, Marquis Flowers (I hope he doesn't get away), and even guys like Van Noy and Roberts have a sh*t-tonne more experience in the schemes than they did at this time last season. I'm hoping for a lot more, "Oh, now I get it!" heading into the 2018 season.

I'll give you my novice answer but some here may correct it or elaborate more.

It has to do with the type of players used in both. You can play 4-3 with 3-4 type players or vice versa. So it's the type of players rather than how they line up.

Basically a 4-3 uses 4 Dt's and 3 LB's. A 3-4 uses 2 Dt's, 1 NT, 2 LB's and two LB/DE hybrids. 3-4 DT's tend to be bigger than the 4-3. That's just a basic layout but it can vary.

The responsibilities of each position are different as well. A 3-4 DT most likely will have two gap responsibilities which means he's blocking or holding an offensive lineman and making sure a running back doesn't try to squeeze by on the left or right side of him. A 4-3 DT more than likely will have one gap to worry about and may even try to split it to get pressure on the QB or to breakdown the running lane potential.

Btw, Gilmore does just fine in both man and zone.

Btw 2: The Patriots will run various types of defensive schemes, which change from week to week and try to find players that are flexible enough to fit in. Their guys are expected to play in all of their schemes.

Btw 3: If you're just watching a game try to figure out what scheme the Pats are using on a particular play. It's tough because they disguise it. If they have Brown, Shelton, Guy on the line and T.Flowers and HT on the edge are they in a 3-4 or a 5-2? :D

Branch had a tough year. He got pushed around a lot which creates a mess for the LB crew. Having VV coming off of IR and the signing of Shelton will fix that problem and that will have a trickle down effect for the rest of the defense. Their LB's can focus on "doing their job" rather than cleaning up Branch's mess.

Branch didn't contribute to the problem at the 2nd half of the season, extending to the playoffs - he was inactive.

Just to be clear. Most Patriot players play in all sorts of fronts or schemes. You may have a few specialists but for the most part every player you see wearing a Pats jersey will be flexible enough to play various roles.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that the Pats defense is a limited playbook. It's one of the more complex defenses in the league.

So who was your NT? You didn't have one. One was on the bench and the other on IR.

I was really hoping for VV returning late last season, having him and Shelton heathy for this offseason makes me happy. I’m glad both are relatively young and good athletes at their size, hopefully won’t hit a wall anytime soon and progress nicely.
