90% of fans cant even tell 32 players in the next draft. If someone gets upset about the tradedown aspect of the trade that happens in the 200s then that person needs their posting rights removed for a month.

Now HANG ON A MOMENT. I'm upset already, but I can tell you about at least 500 players in the upcoming draft. What does that win me? :p

thats BB (& Nick) for you. Also some serious new leadership in CLE FO helps.
After BB snubbed them for JImmy - both trades quickly w CLE - both very cheap.
Nice surprise - since -as we said - there will be more fruit falling from that tree after Draft, TC..

Cool! We got a player.. now I’m happy

By my rough calculations, after the McCourty trade and an estimate of ~$3M 2018 cap hit for Burkhead's new contract, the Pats have +/- $5.5M in usable cap space left to spend (after setting aside draftee requirements and emergency in-season reserve funds).

I think you used the wrong value for the rookies. A good portion of that salary is already on the cap; remember that the early-round rookies will knock other players off the top 51.

ATM, it'd be a lot closer to $2.5M than $5M+.

Yeah doesn’t he struggle big time in Man?
He’s a liability in man. Much better in zone. I’m not the biggest fan of this move and hope we see another corner brought in via the draft.

Jonathan Jones was one of the best slot corners in the league last year. It helps to have multiple players who can play the slot but Rowe's job is much more in jeopardy, at least as far as I would guess.

I may have missed it, but did we ever learn exactly what Jones' injury was? The severity of injury could be a significant factor re: 2018 plans.

JMac was 27th overall last year in the entire NFL according to PFF.

Butler was 51st. Gilmore 7th.

You cant struggle so badly and still get almost into the top 25 corners conversation.

This guy is nothing more than a jag, Chad Scott, Hank Poteat, Eric Rowe, blah blah blah...hope he works out but could be a camp cut....

They traded for a guy who was going to be released anyway? o_O I'm guessing they didn't want to compete in offering him a contract? Some team might have offered $5m per with the money being thrown around.
His cap hit is 2.8 million and he's under contract already
And by trading they don't have to worry about comp pick impact.

Love the trade. Pats give up their sixth rounder, that would be the thirty-first pick in the round, get the Browns' seventh rounder which will be first in the round.

So they moved down two picks to get Jason McCourty on his current contract instead of negotiating with him as FA where they might be bidding against other teams and risking impact on comp picks. Typical, making chess moves in a checkers game.

Rowe is so cheap that I doubt his slot on the roster is really in danger. That would require JJones, CJones AND Ryan Lewis balling him off the 53.

Indeed, although the the trade was mainly for his salary. He would've been exempt from the comp pick formula anyway. Players who are cut/released don't count.

I'm using Miguel's numbers. He has the Pats at roughly $17.4M after the McCourty trade, but not including the 2018 cap hits of draftees, which he estimates at between $2.5M and $3.0M additional cost to the cap (I'm using $2.75M to split the difference). I assume he's accounting for the "push-down effect" on the top-51 (a detail he's unlikely to miss).

That gets my number down to $14.7. I'm setting aside $6.0M for in-season expenses (emergencies, NLTBE incentives, etc.), which yields $8.7M

Then, I'm using Burkhead's original projected 2017 cap hit of $3.15M (he didn't earn quite that much due to missing 6 games). That gets me down to $5.56M usable.

For the record, it's actually moving down from #205 to #219 due to the 6th-round comp picks in between, but that's a distinction without any real difference that late in the draft.
