Matt Light on Patriots: "The culture has changed"

The "Patriot Way" is more a media myth than anything else.

There is a Patriot Way but how it was framed by the media is a myth.
Boy scout troop playing the game of football with the infinite power of moral righteousness? No.
Expected to very zealously ply your craft, train-retrain-retrain against making the same mistakes, laser focus on winning being singularly important? Yes.

People shooting the messenger again?

I don't think so. Just doubting the accuracy of his message.

The culture has changed quite a few times in that locker room... as it does almost every year to a degree.

It changed most notably for the worse in 2009... when he was still there.

And somehow it didn't change in 2014 and 2016, when they won.

We saw the effects of a problematic locker room in the documentary about 2009, so let's not pretend it's not a real thing to deal with.

I don't get the sense that Light is grumbling about how players aren't as serious as in his day or anything. After they lost the SB in 2011, Light and Gronk were the two guys who were prominently seen on video partying, after all. I think he's basically just saying that today's 40 year olds have little in common with today's 20 year olds, which doesn't strike me as a very controversial statement.

Even if he wanted to knock today's team as being unaccountable or something, it would be a pretty bizarre and nonsensical observation as this team is even more successful than the teams in his prime were.

doesn't take much to get the dingleberries jumpin around

There's a documentary about 2009? Sounds interesting and painful.

He could be right. Hell, he may even be right. My question is how can he know for sure?

Why does that question only get asked when people don't like the message? How can he know for sure? Players/coaches could be telling him (I'm not saying they are, just that they could).

You’re giving me less credit than you should. I ask those questions when I “like” the news, too. Anyway, that makes sense. If I were to guess (thinking back on teammates he played with that are still on the squad), my guess would be Gronk if that were the case.

You were asking that question about an ex-player, Kontra, so the answer was about as obvious as it gets. As you know, I normally give you a lot of credit, but that question was way beneath you.

I don’t think the culture changed, I think that dudes stupid for saying all that. The culture is what it’s always been

I think the question has merit. Quoting Light from the story itself...

“In the past, as a team, were we able to overcome things like the loss of a Richard Seymour or a Lawyer Milloy or a Ty Law - the list goes on and on and on – yeah, we were. It wasn’t always perfect and we had a long stretch there where we didn’t do real well throughout the playoff run. But, today when kids walk into the organization they have a greater sense of entitlement. I watched that happen towards the end of my career.”

He seems to be talking purely from a perspective of how it was at the end of his career. How things were then. He seems to be taking that example and painting with a very broad brush in regards to how he sees things now. You essentially even admitted yourself that there’s no way to be certain that he knows for sure.

For me, a statement like this would have a lot more meaning if it came from guys like Butler, Amendola, Lewis, or Solder.

I think the question has merit.

Had you asked something like "Is he hearing this from players, or just speculating?", it would have had merit. When you ask how a former player could know, you need to re-think your question.

Keyword being former, of course.
