Browns trade Shelton to Patriots

Most players who suck on one team also suck on the next.
Most players who are average on one team are also average on the next.
The volatility of successful team change is usually with high end players. Shelton has not been a high end player, to date.

Is ^ that a fact? Sounds like an opinion. Some data to back that up might make the case. In the meantime Rodney Harrison, Moss and Corey Dillon were all "washed up and over the hill" when the Patriots traded for them... how'd that work out?

Meh, if I wanted to argue that point I would have gone with Vrabel, Nink, Welker, Dola...but that's just me ;)

I would have given you Ninkovich for sure, and given you Vrabel with a "Yeah, but", because of Pittsburgh's LB situation at the time.

I would definitely have denied Welker and Amendola though, because they were good before they showed up. We knew what the team was getting with them.

Were Moss, Dillon or Harrison 24 when they came over? I'm asking because those were the names I was responding to. If not (and they weren't), then what's not relevant is your response.

They weren't, which is why I made it a point to say that players mentioned by both of you were irrelevant. It's in the text you quoted.

On paper, I see this as a no-brainer for the Pats. Doesn't mean it will work out. Ealy was a no-brainer for the Pats last year and it didn't work out.

I think there's a lot less risk to this signing than that one. Maybe he hasn't been great, but he's been better than what we already had there and HIS best position fits BB's scheme perfectly.

An underrated part of this trade, IMO, is that it involves a pick swap, rather than being an outright player for pick trade. This team needs to hit on some young talent. How you look at this year's draft in round 5 versus next year's draft at the bottom of round 3 comes into play here, IMO.

But my post was a relevant response to his, which was my point. And Shelton's age is irrelevant to my overall point about talent and team shifting.

Ah but then I would have pointed out how their production vastly improved once they got here which was, after all, the nature of the argument. And you would have begrudgingly conceded the point because that's what an intelligent person does when reminded the devil is in the details. But of course that's neither here nor there since this was simply a hypothetical discussion as we weren't really arguing the point.

Of particular interest there is that 5th will be at the top of the round and we expect things will hold true to form and the 3rd will be among the last of the noncompensatory picks in round 3 next year. We are a justifiably arrogant fan base.

The media - especially the sports media - speculates wildly (based on unnamed "inside sources") - IOW, they just make sh*t up - and then that speculation gets echoed by other media guys until it becomes accepted as fact.

You guys do know this, right?

Dude, spare me the Chris Stevenson type response with your last line.

Sure, great. I acknowledged all your points in my original reply. His age is a little relevant in that he's a scheme fit who has been playing in one that doesn't fit him, so we don't really know that he's not a good player. I'm fine playing wait and see, as I said in the post you called irrelevant because you didn't properly read it.

Shelton is a good player...clogs the middle he is very strong against the run. but we still have a long way to go. Shelton is slow and big...

We need more speed on this defense than ever before....Speed.
...and pass rush...

Shelton has neither of those things

I hope we find a fast pass rusher this offseason
I am working on it. Despite my bravado on this board, my influence on the team is limited.

I wanted the Pats to draft him a couple years ago. He's been practically invisible to me ever since the Browns drafted him, so I have no idea how well he's played. I was actually trying to remember his name yesterday.
Forget it TBR, its Cleveland, where talent goes to die. Similar to the jest

I like this trade because I do not see the patriots risking a lot.

If Shelton works, which I hope he does, it will be a huge win for the pats. From the above conversation no one seems to say he sucks. The only debate is whether he is average, good, or great. (note that I have never seen him play a game and thus basing this only on the above).

If he is a failure on the pats, the pats will move down a bit in the draft for no gain.

Even if it does not work out, I would not say it was a bad trade for the pats based on the cost paid.
