We need CB’s, but I do think that money needs to be spent elsewhere.

We need a pass rush. We always need a pass rush, and we never seem to solve our lack of a pass rush.

Go get some guys that can give us a legit pass rush for once, because I’m sick of watching guys like Nick Foles getting to drink cups of tea in the pocket every f’ing year.

We'll see. BB might take him to Kelly's Roast Beef at Jordans Furniture and doodle on some napkins. That'll win Sherm over I'm sure....

Bad news - that Kelly's closed at the end of January. I made a big deal about taking my wife and daughter to a last lunch on their next to last day, and then afterwards my wife told me she had gone there two days earlier without me for work. I feel so betrayed!!!

No one will like this opinion, but at this point it might be smarter just to look at some lower market guys. Bring in a guy like Gaines, Amukumara, or even an older vet like Grimes.

Not a lot of top flight CB’s left, but plenty of guys who could pass as solid #2 CB’s are out there.

The Patriots have their #1 CB - Sherman is not coming here. We will look to upgrade - but it will be a value player. Our coverage LBs are awful, and we have issues with pass rush and age at safety. This defense, if not improved, could be worse than last year. Bend and don’t break failed in the SB. If Hightower is not effective, we will start off in a huge hole.

We will likely draft a LB in the draft. Some good ones out there.

I think that given that Sherman has shown an interest in coming here, the pats should at least inquire as to what he's looking for in terms of $$$. If the pats can get him for $7 million, then they be all over that. He is a game changer on defense if healthy. If he's looking for something in the $10-12 million range, then we can use that money on a cheapo DB and put that cash into the front 7.

There’s a lot of truth here. The front 7 doesn’t get beat up with those two on the field, especially HT.

I would love to have Richard Sherman on the team; he obviously boosts the secondary and would help the team.

But it's all about getting the most marginal value for their buck. My top two targets in free agency this year were Preston Brown and Justin Ellis because they solve exactly those two issues - a real MLB who can play instead of Roberts and when combined with HT would shutdown the run and be competitive with the pass, and a true NT who may not have 2016 Branch's pass rushing ability but certainly isn't a liability there and does have 2016 Branch's run stopping abilities. While Sherman is a better player than each of them, they provide more marginal improvement on the defense than Sherman does. Which is why I was hoping they could get Sherman relatively cheaply, but clearly that isn't going to happen.

Ellis is off the market now too unfortunately; I haven't had a chance to really get a plan B there.

Maybe an interesting question is this: given the Patriots team right now, who helps them the most at a 7m cap charge, Richard Sherman or Donetari Poe? I love Sherman, but my opinion is that it's Poe by a country mile.

The 49ers have a young QB but Sherman's not looking to win a championship if he goes there. He wants to get pay and that's it. I still like the rams in that division.

I guess it’s bye bye Sherman. Now, we could be onto second/third tier CBs such as Darby, Amukamara, Colvin, etc. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many good, durable, young, inexpensive CBs on the market. At the moment, Colvin or Darby would be our best bet, besides the draft (or barring a trade). PHI may make Darby available. I’d be okay with him if he can stay healthy. More importantly, let’s fix our LB/Pass Rush & in-house FA situation & see where it leads us. Sherm would have been nice though :(.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if we had interest in Safety Kenny Vaccaro.

In BB we trust.

If the Pats are willing to pay $7 mil, someone will pay more. It won’t happen. We have a lot of holes.

Stop making sense. I want my splash signings !

Two really great top corners in the league wanted to come here and we are probably gonna end up with neither, how lovely.

Rowe was not humiliated but was the second best defensive back next to Gilmore. There were more issues with Harmon and how Foles was able to to manipulate him than with Rowe once he got reassigned.

McCourty also didnt play his main position. He was essentially anything but a free safety in this game because the coaching staff didnt trust the DL and the LBs to be effective against the run.

You wanna know what would have magically cured most of the issues ? Not Butler on the field but the 2016 version of Alan Branch. Add in Hightower and the Eagles dont score more than 20.

What game were you watching? Was trying to find the link were the Eagles coaching staff was shocked they started Rowe. Right away they knew they were going at him because he was a "former" member of their team. The 2nd best db was McCourty who yes gave up a TD but only like 2-4 completed passes for 14 yards or something. Foles had forever to pass out of that shotgun. He wasn't "hit" much either.

A clean jersey game.

Our secondary doesn’t look as bad as it did if we had any semblance of a pass rush. Just saying.

DMac was not a DB for the majority of the game but essentially a in-the-box safety so no-**** he was only beat a few times in coverage.

Rowe played well after the first quarter. The Eagles being happy about him starting was about his initial unfavorable matchup and not about him being on the field. Once he got switched he pretty much did his job as well as a year ago against Julio Jones. You can go contrarian on that all you want but looking at what most respected analysts say about the game you are wrong.

We need another DT with Branch gone, we need another LB outside of Hightower and Derek Rivers, we desperately need DE's outside of Trey Flowers... corner is the least of our issues. If Sherman wants to play for peanuts "come on down." Otherwise don't waste the money on an achilles injury on a 30+ year old corner.

Oh no! I didn't know.

There is always iHop

Although I agree that the d line and lb positions are more of a need, getting a solid number 2 cb will help our defense tremendously.

[QUOTE="Wozzy, post: 5274644, member: 39285" corner is the least of our issues. [/QUOTE]

Dussault as usual sums it up well..

I think it makes more sense to address the secondary through the draft instead of free agency. They don't need a day one starter, they need young depth for the inevitable injuries and players with the talent to take over for the likes of Chung and McCourty when age inevitably catches up with them.

Sherman, while exciting in theory, is sort of the worst of both worlds. Over 30, coming off a bad injury, may not even be ready before Thanksgiving, and completely questionable as to whether he'll be anything like his old self ever again. And you have to spend $10 million to find out.

It's a decent gamble for teams like the Niners or Browns with virtually unlimited cap space, but if it came down between Solder or Sherman, the choice is pretty obvious to me. And I say this noting that I think Solder is nothing more than an average left tackle.

On the other hand, Tyrann Mathieu, who's 4 years younger than Sherman and has a lot of positional versatility, would be well worth taking a look at acquiring.
