Bennett Situation A Bit Complicated

Without regard to which round we're talking, it's worth remembering how good we are at getting different positions in the draft... thus far, in the BB era, TE seems a strength.

Now that said, it's a copycat league, and everybody wants a pass-catching TE that's a LB mismatch nightmare. I daresay there might not ever be one that's as hard to gameplan as Gronk, where you can drape cornerbacks on him with no DPI calls, call him for phantom OPIs, and he still catches 10 balls and a TD or two.

Look, I'm just happy if the next TE we draft works out better than that Hernandez kid.

Gronk also blocks like a very good OL. Most "pass-catching TEs" don't block as well as Betty White.

This guy is nails. I'm sure he'll do just fine.

Respect.

Betty White got game.

Her burst isn't what it was but she still runs a tight route...

It is only a strength if there is a player in the draft that fits the bill and the opportunity arises to get that player.

90% of people who advocate to cut players and "replace them via the draft" wouldn't even know most of the players of a first round mock.

If one of those actually would give a name of a draftable player that they consider a good prospect at least this encourages discussion. But waving the magical wand and say someone is too expensive, lets cut them and replace them via FA or draft just shows that the poster is lazy and has no clue how roster building works.

From what little I've been able to observe, what we do goes something like this:

1) Do something nobody's expecting, and stick to our evaluation for how we can use this player.
2) When league catches up, draft value until/unless we look to trigger another run on where we're going next.
2a) So the "Gronk/Hernandez" draft never happens again, even approximately -- because rather than shrug, raise their eyebrows, and say "well that's the Pats, always reaching for TEs," they'll be worried about it. We generate our own competition in the "last niche."

3) (Countervailing, TE history only): Watson and Grahambo weren't exactly strikeouts either. So a bonanza at TE might not happen, unless the guy we want is truly not what anybody else wants, but this crew can draft TEs between serviceable and star.

That said - all else being equal, were I to say "The Patriots draft this position well" about any given position, I'd say TE is one of the better percentage bets.

Your points are all taken. I frankly don't follow college ball, and draftnik stuff just cracks me up. I usually grab a binkie or two to get through the off-season, watch what's being said, and usually do a "Mock Grade" for the Pats draft, where I talk about how horrible every choice is and for what reasons.

I've actually come up with some gems on that thread, but nobody ever reads it, and if they do, 9 out of 10 are earnest doctrinaire draftniks "disagreeing" with my parody opinion.

How dare you make light of all the calculations and prognostications of those that have done their serious draft homework? Their genius should be recognized and lauded. They deserve to be in the bunker with The Hooded One saving him from himself. Just ask them, they'll tell you.

I believe anyone whos played football in the yard would tell you not to draft Jordan Richards especially in the 2nd round

Sometimes you win...
Sometimes you lose...

David Wells, San Diego State, TE/ST. Yes he'll play special teams. Yes, he was a high school quarterback. Yes, he can play tight... actually, no idea whether he can play tight and. Target's painted on him for late rounds or UDFA for us, which means I dunno, 3rd round, who knows :D

Prognosticators mothers be like...

so, Belichick should take a poll of such folks before he drafts?

Belichick overrated Richards. However, NOW, he is on the roster, and is one of our 5-6 or so special teamers should should be playing anything but social teams: Slater, Bolden, Grissom, King, Ebner and Richards.

The draft is a crapshoot in every round. That's why I usually like trading picks for proven players (like Cooks).

As for the lazy part, in my case it's more that I usually don't care who they get. I'm usually for or against most moves but only slightly. I have to see the new players play as a Patriot to have a strong opinion.

I have the same carefree attitude for the salary cap as well. I believe that between Bill, Ernie & Bob they have it figured out, so why worry about it or try to predict what they'll do.

I'll throw in personal bs also. I really don't care what happens off the field as long as players play hard. All they owe me is that, no matter how much they make.

Having said all of that, I still appreciate seeing those things discussed here by so many other Pats fans.

New Zealand's finest right there. Sounds sort of like a combo between Springsteen trying to coopt latin rhythms and bare naked ladies. And maybe TMBG on "The Guitar" but just because of the Elephants and horns.

I'm announcing my early draft binky:

David Wells, TE, San Diego State. You heard it here first. He will be a Patriot.

The current presence of a player does not demand the future presence of said player.

what an absolutely Aristotlean post...or would that be Socratic?
