Hail Mary’s

Should they tweak the Hail Mary penalty rule a little bit?

You can scrum and knock into a player, but you can't tackle him!

Chris Hogan was knocked hard at the thirty, and then wrapped up with a tackle at the 3.

If that's allowed, why wouldn't you do that to every wide receiver? Why not just tackle them?

Didn't Brady move outside of the pocket? I'm pretty sure once he scrambles, the defenders can play a lot more physical. I haven't quite had the heart to rewatch that play more closely, however, so I could very well be wrong.

For us well seasoned older guys.

The Miracle in Miami, Flutie to Phelan! 30+ years later and it still never fails to put a smile on my face. Well done sir!

Tony Eason game winning Hail Mary to Irving fryar (I think) Vs LA rams in 86 (I think)....

Sunnyvale Chris beat you to it, where is Sunnyvale by the way, sounds like a nice place.

Michael bishop in the late 90s

This article breaks down Rodgers's success on this play a bit more:

The magic behind Aaron Rodgers’s Hail Mary success

The key that I took away was how high Rodgers launches the ball. Receivers talk about how it's basically like a punt, so it falls like one and tails a bit. DBs struggle to predict it and can't highpoint it.

So someone like Dola or Jules might be great at tracking that down even over a monster like Gronk.

I'd also love to see a variation where everyone is in a scrum in the right corner of the end zone and Brady launches to the left, so a speed guy like Cooks could break out and potentially get there before a defender. So instead of relying on the group bouncing it around, it just acts as a vacuum to suck up all the defenders, then relies on one on one speed. But that's probably not possible based on the distance and velocity of the ball.

We think alike, I was thinking of a hail Mary where everyone's to one side and one guy sprints to the opposite side, would the D have time to adjust even if Brady faked to one side and threw a bullet to the opposite side?

I was thinking of those punt returns where a returner runs to the far side away from the ball but it looks like he's going to field the punt, so gunners just naturally head that way. Something like this.

Irving Fryar is the first to pop up in my mind. I think someone beat me to it. I wish this team had WRs that good!

Not directly responsive to the OP, but:

1. Due to defending a Hail Mary, Randy Moss was once the Pats' INT leader a few games into the season.

2. Supposedly the term was coined by Doug Flutie. More precisely, it was supposedly coined based on an interview in which he said that he'd said a Hail Mary during his famous college pass play.

When was last time the Pats had a successful hail mary? Maybe instead of using Gronk again, use some of the cb’s instead?

In that situation what would you try??...

Interestingly they use Gronk to defend against another team's "hail mary" efforts..

Then there was "Little Dougie" 33+ years ago..

On #2, I think it was Staubach.

You can't do what they did to Hogan at the goal line, you can't wrap and tackle him. You can maybe chuck him after Brady scrambles, but at the goalline they went way too far.

Only true Hail Mary I recall the Pats pulling off was the '86 Rams game in Anaheim. Jim Everett's first NFL game.

Regards,
Chris
Steamer batted it up in the air before Fryar caught it.

Remember defense' strategy is to KNOCK IT DOWN!

Get two or more guys in the area, keep it in the air, you increase your chances.

Gronk had a shot at both SB Hail Mary's, but somebody had to bat the ball and simultaneously take out a couple of defenders first.
