Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

Painful. I was there for 49 and 52. Malcolm was our hero 3 years ago and now no one still know what happened in 52. Whatever happened with Butler wasn’t the only reason we lost, but it was a huge factor, especially with other team members and coaches probably being pissed about it all game. Painful.

Two words:

Jordan Richards

Advanced Stats Report: Tom Brady’s mastery marred by defensive implosion

"In just 11 snaps in coverage, Richards allowed a team-high 81 yards into his coverage, as the Patriots opted to have him cover Eagles tight end, Zach Ertz, while Patrick Chung mostly saw Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor."

As a footnote, someone needs to inform Bill Belichick that Patrick Chung is not a slot cornerback. o_O

So help me if Richards sets foot in TC I will personally pay Jeff Golooly and Tonya Harding to come up with another plan and execute it <kidding>.

I think the lack of logic dictates the issue goes far beyond butler

I think it involves coach, owner, qb, qb...... I’m starting to think butler was just collateral damage

We're winning it next year!!! I hope its against the Falcons again, on their turf . Payback for the Eagles would be great too.

It's been a week and this issue festers. The explanations really don't make much sense. Here's two questions that destroy most of the scheme-based excuses:

1. In the history of the Super Bowl, when has a player like Butler not played a snap? A player who:

a. Is healthy.
b. Is not being disciplined.
c. Played at least 90% of the snaps the previous three years (obviously Butler far higher)
d. Including every game of the playoffs.

2. If there is a positive answer to 1., then when has this happened when the team was getting crushed on the phase of the game (offense of defense) that player was playing?

There've been 52 Super Bowls. That's thousands of players suited up.

If there was a scheme-based answer ("oh, Butler was valuable every snap the last three years but with this one game we're benching him because matchups") then why wouldn't this scenario have arisen before?

The offense didn't blow the field goal. The offense didn't blow the extra point.

You're inability to understand football does not make me a pinkhat. Your inability to understand football just means that you don't understand football.
Your lack of reading comprehension is hilarious. It fits nicely with your lack of football knowledge.
When did I ever say the offense blew the FG?? When did I ever say the offense blew the extra point??
What I did say is the Patriot offense got off to their typical slow start, left a lot of points on the field in that first half and that contributed to the loss. Any intelligent football fan would acknowledge that. Guess that's why you can't, eh?? ;)

No doubt, gotta start to wonder if we’ll ever get a clear answer on this.

In the grand scheme of things, we really should get an answer. But I expect it won't happen until Belichick retires, if then.

Scoring 33 points certainly is enough to win a football game, wouldn't you say? Just like allowing 41 points pretty much wrecks those chances.

Reiss' latest Sunday column says that his sources say the benching was not disciplinary.

Yes but Reiss isn't totally buying it.

And are the Eagles scoring 41 points if the Patriots are tied/leading heading into the 2nd half and able to hold the ball, eat up the clock and keep the Eagle offense/their defense off the field?? Well????
The inability of so many Patriot fans to actually analyze the game within the game is embarrassing!
The in depth analysis from Tune and Deus is "err dey skord tirdy tree points." :p
The reality is the Patriots had over 300 yards of total offense in the 1st half scored only 1 TD and attempted THREE FG's. That is just not good enough for an offense with that firepower. 12 points at halftime, not good enough. Let's say Gost makes his miss and also hits the extra point and they score 16 points at halftime. NOT good enough. When Stephen Gostkowski is scoring as many points as the offense in the 1st half of any game, never mind the Super Bowl, that's NOT good. The bottom line is the offense sputtered in the 1st half, left a lot of points on the field and because of it they were losing by 10 points at halftime.....and that directly impacted how the 2nd half played out.

True, he says he's still open to any new information that might come out but it's the best info he has for now
That and like the rest of us the decision to not play Malcolm was so far out of the box that has to be more to it.

Ya, but it’s a pretty valid point. 33 points is greater than the average scored per game by any NFL team for the 2017 season. It is the highest number of points ever scored by a losing SB team. It was more than enough to win, even accounting for the 4 points the Pats kicking team left on the field, with a better defensive effort.

So here we are, a week out, and no one has any answers at all to WTF that was all about last week.

Sorry, but simply causing this much aingst is disturbing.

The benching of Butler will linger for many years. If it wasn't disciplinary, as the Pats insist, and he was healthy enough to play, it has to go down as one of the most bone-headed coaching moves of the last few decades.

I guess even BB (absolutely, the greatest football coach I've ever watched) is capable of a Grady Little moment. I don't know how else to explain that travesty from last week.
