If Schiano is hired as DC think it'll be a sign Belichick is looking to stick around. Looking back...Chuck Fairbanks was considered the Pats greatest HC before Parcells and Belichick, but he left in part because of the circle of people he had to see every day in the workplace meaning the Sullivans. The more friends BB can stock the team's front office with, the better it looks for him to stick around...IMO of course.

The main reason why he will stick around -- and Reiss alluded to that -- is that he has both his sons working with the organization. This alone will add a few years to his longevity.

The Scoop - Monday February 5, 2018 - FootballScoop

New England Patriots: Source tells FootballScoop Greg Schiano is bringing University of Minnesota defensive coordinator Robb Smith with him to the Patriots. Smith served on Schiano’s staff at Rutgers and with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

I really don't know how I feel about this sudden surge of outside help tbh. Living near Philly, it reminds me of some of the strange coaching staff manuevers Andy Reid made at the end of his Eagles campaign.

His best fit certainly seems to be LB coach. Are they letting Flores leave, or are we going to see something like assistant HC Schiano, DC Flores, and LB coach Smith? A little too quiet on the Flores front.

It’s also worth noting that Smith was the position coach for Lavonte David’s 145 tackle, 7 sack, 5 pick season in 2013. That’s the kind of thing I know people here would love to see at that position.

Would love to have all 3

Sorry for the repeat. Missing the delete post button.

I'm not necessarily against it. I've been a Patricia critic but have had to hold back because his defense has made key plays won two Super Bowls despite an inconsistent performance.

He SUCKED on the biggest stage. The worst defensive performance in a playoff game over this entire run. Good luck, Detroit.

Flores? Wasn't he supposed to be playing a key role with the red zone defense? That looked pretty **** as well last night.

Ultimately neither were helped by a Belichick benching Butler but still...

Is this really outside help though?

The team might as well set up its draft war room at Rutgers while Schiano was there. He was the college head coach for current safeties coach Stephen Belichick.

Schiano is about as insider as a guy could be without ever having been on Belichick's coaching staff.

One vote here for Eric Mangini.

Sounds like that page is just reporting ******** to get some clicks because Robb Smith knows nothing about him joining the Pats:

Let’s re-evaluate after signing day on Wednesday. It’s in Minnesota’s interests to not announce anything until after those kids are locked in, as cruel as that sounds.

I don’t know if this is the right time to bring this up but the Penn State child sex abuse scandal revealing testimony from Mike McQueary about “Schiano witnessing an act by Sandusky and not doing anything about it” ...

Was this all slander and completely debunked later on? If so, that’s terrible a innocent mans name would have to be dragged through the mud like that

Matt Patricia isn't the reason for losing. The D was bend but not break.
The D broke for 41 points in SB 52. Didn’t see any bending.

I'd love to see a new defense put in and add some unpredictability and aggressiveness. That probably won't happen though. Belichick has absolute control (which obviously for the most part works) and the frustrating bend don't break will likely not change.

Anyone else think the Pats defense actually underachieved? I think they had the personnel to be above average despite not having as much talent in the front seven as they did in the secondary.

I just think one factor is teams know for the most part what to expect from a Belichick defensive game plan and they need something different.
