Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

Disagree away. All kinds of stories out there, I do agree that Butler gave us the best chance to win and will take it to my grave that he would of made atleast one game changing stop. Don't agree with benching if it was for performance.

The other so called rumors if true I would side with Belichick. Why should BB change what has worked for this team for one player who put his himself above the rules? If he does it sets an example that it is ok for everyone to do it. Yep, it punishes the team and fans but was it BB that did that or the player? Again this is all just based off of rumors at this point. It would actually be a lot easier to except if it was the latter so I wouldnt think BB has lost his mind.

Glad we agree on your first point.

As for punishing him, sure he deserves to be reprimanded, but benching during the most important game of the season, is the wrong way to do it. Butler in this game, may have just been enough to tip the game in our favor.

Yesterday's coaching was a fireable offense.

I might be getting trolled, but are you suggesting they fire BB ? Really? Ok, fine. you want to fire the best coach, arguably, the league has ever seen. What is your solution? Who will you replace him with?

Malcolm Butler wasn't the only person shocked by Bill Belichick's decision to bench him for the entirety of Super Bowl LII. Across the field, Eagles coaches and players also couldn't believe what they were seeing.

"After the first series or two. We were like, '[Butler's] not in the game!'" an Eagles assistant told TheMMQB.com's Andy Benoit. "They have 23 [Patrick Chung] in there. That's crazy!'"

Philly's coaching staff already knew that an average New England defense struggled to defend bunch formations and even before learning of Butler's fate, had planned to exploit that on Sunday night. And that task became immeasurably easier with Butler stuck on the sidelines for what Belichick described as strictly a football decision.

According to the Eagles' assistant, the plan was to go after backup cornerback Eric Rowe because "we could get Alshon [Jeffery] out there against him."

And why were the Eagles so confident that Rowe was a liability?

"We had Rowe on our team here in Philly, we knew that was a mismatch," he said.

I don't think I will ever forgive bb for benching butler. Worst decision of his career.

Completely fair to question Bill on this one.

But I can't imagine what 'whole truth' could come out that would make me take BB's side. If Butler was late for something, if he was caught with weed, if he got in an argument with a coach...none of these things is worth benching the whole game, especially when you saw how bad the defense was playing. He didn't get arrested so it's an internal discipline thing. If it comes out he punched a coach, sure. But short of that, there's nothing that can make me take BB's side. And the more realistic scenario is that BB was trying to send a message

If he really was partying way past curfew the night before the SB then it all would make sense. By that I dont mean that it was the right decision but it would be in character for BB to bench him.

I think the partying is just what broke the camels back. I think there were a lot of things that accumulated over the last year(s) but never got out. I still remember those weird instagram likes that were all inadvertent and so on..

the idea of firing him comes from the heat of the moment. I think even if he benched Butler out of stubbornness only you cannot fire him.

The ONLY reason I would fire him is not even possible, which would be if he did not put his best foot forward on purpose to win it because he was mad at Kraft. (Which I do not see as a valid possibility for Belichick, or even for Parcells back when people though he perhaps wanted to deny Kraft XXXI.

i still cant believe he didnt play a single snap on defense.

I feel like im in shock. That cant be right? zero defensive snaps? the dude who makes plays in big games... zero snaps? the defense gave up like 600 yards, how do you not put butler in to see if there is a spark or something.

ZERO SNAPS?

We're talking about snaps.

ZERO SNAPS.

We will never know the truth but it hurt this defense big time.

Okay, we don't know still if its true or not... but in the event that say it is true that Butler was partying and so on. This is the same team that approaches things with the mindset and ideology of "no days off" so that buys into this particular narrative. However there is a glaring flaw within this since BB attended what two basketball games or whatever through the week, so doesn't take on a hypocrisy stance in a way? Like I'm honestly just confused at this point really...

Yeah, I'm definitely not arguing that it's in character for BB to bench him, total BB move. I'm just really mad about that decision.

If you want to play the devils advocate, the Pats were in the perfect position to win the game. I mean, honestly, did anybody not think they were going to score a TD with those 2+ minutes left. I know I was very confident. That fumble was the game. Plain and simple. The Eagles knew what they had to do in that situation and did it, plain and simple.

It makes no damn sense! I am trying to get over this but it's difficult. Guy's your second best corner

Our defense gave the iggles defense a second wind. That drive by the iggles was over 7 minutes. It was pathetic!

He must of broken a team rule or done something we don’t know about.

...If not then it is inexcusable coaching decision

Butler playing or not there's no excuse to giving up 40 pts to a Nick foles led team.

Belichick caught him doing something bad, that for sure..

Get BB outta here!!!!
His time has run it's course.

Benching Butler was selfish on so many levels. It made everyone in the secondary shift their assignment at the last minute. The fact that Rowe came out and said he was clueless that he’d start before the game is proof. Players study their assignments all week and then you switch it up at the last moment? That’s like telling a HS kid that he has a test on the Revolutionary War only to tell him the day before it’s going to be on WW2 instead. How are players supposed to “Do Your Job” this way?
