2018 Draft Prospect Thread

Big fan of Devron Davis & Siran Neal for that Slot/SS hybrid type as well. Both small school guys that won't go top 64 in all likelihood.

Jones was a lanky kid that had no idea what he was doing in terms of passing rushing. Again he just started coming into his own 3-4 years ago.

DMC underwent a position change for a reason at CB.

No problem agreeing to disagree though. I could very well be wrong.

Well it’s semantics probably. You’d take him at pick 32 and I’d take Davenport with the SF pick so not a huge difference. In one of Bill Holley’s books there was a write up about Patriots draft grades and they put a second rounder on those with first round ability but that had a knock on them (Gronk’s injury, Jamie Collins’ lack of a definite position for example. First rounders went to players that could start early. That’s why I’m going with a second for Davenport. I’m just not sure what impact he’d have in year one.

Here’s how Holley says the Patriots grade prospects. This is a few years old though:

  1. Starter: 9.00-9.99 A+, 8.00-8.99 A, 8.00-8.99 Q —someone who will start in the NFL in his first year
  2. Circumstantial starter: 7.00-7.99 C —someone who should start in the NFL in his first year, but has issues (NCAA rules, family problems, etc.)
  3. Make It+: 6.50-6.99 —won't start in year one, but will contribute; expected to become a starter
  4. Dirty Starter: 6.00-6.49 —could start, but has issues (could be either a talented underachiever or an overachiever; could have limitations, such as speed)
  5. Make It: 5.50-5.99 —will make the roster, but "won't win or lose a game for you"
  6. Free Agent: 5.00-5.49 —not expected to make the team, but could after a year on the PS
  7. Pats Reject: 4.90-4.99 —does not meet Patriots' criteria, but could end up on another team
  8. Reject: 1.00 —doesn't belong in the NFL, period

A+/A = definite/potential HOF talent; C = circumstances; Q = height-deficient

Fitzpatrick is going to be a stud in the NFL, they ask him to do so much at Bama that you don't really get to see the strengths of his game shine as much as you should.

Fitzpatrick may have already reached his ceiling.. that’s my concern with bama players. Although that concern is lesser when it’s a top 5 guy

Jarrett Stidham returning to Auburn.

Damn, I really like him. If he keeps developing he might be out of reach next year in the draft.

I've used and tweaked my own weird grading scale as well for almost 10 years.

Surprisingly (Lol I'm not that smart) it's very similar. Everyone's different and it works for me bc I look for certain players like anyone else.

Essentially broking down into tiers of players as close as I can/want.

9.5-10 - Elite/HOF potential 1st
8.5-9.4 - Impact/Long term Starter 1st
8.0-8.4 - Future Starter/Upside 2nd

7.0-7.9 - Upside/Rotation/ST 3rd
6.5-6.9 - Depth/ST/Upside 4th

6.0-6.4 - Take a shot 5th
5.5-5.9 - Take a shot 6th
5.0-5.4 - Take a shot 7th

What I appreciate about the Patriot's grading system is that it's more about contribution -- can a player step in to a starting lineup? Is there a role in a subpackage? Special teams? Etc. So the player might not have the highest upside or whatever, but if he can do the specific job they have in mind, and do it quickly, then he's rated highly.

Big fan of both these guys who excel at different things. Tate & Moore would be deadly lined up together.

I am waiting for the LSU corners to turn pro especially donte Jackson.

You know I love Tate, and after watching Moore, he's probably my preferred slot guy. I'm not sure there's room for them all on the roster, but I'd love that draft.

I need to watch some tape on dj moore. He looks like someone who can learn alot from edelman. Another receiver i really like in the slot is richie james. He plays for a smaller school but the guy its electric with the ball in his hands.

Idk about that. I think it's a strong class but we will see in a couple of years. Idk if you can wait. Personally I would try and go after bridgewater if he's healthy with his knees. Can he stay healthy and get stronger.
If MIN doesn't start him it's hard to picture him, not starting elsewhere and sitting behind Brady

Im really high on Armani Watts from A and M. I also like Will Clapp from LSU. anyone know if Clapp made a decision yet

Just started watching prospects (still early looks (1 or 2 game films)

1. Luke Falk - Like him a fair bit. Good Pats fit.

2. Rashaan Evans - Can see why Reamer and Evans like him so much. I think he’s a good Pats fit but I don’t love him as much as they do although still very early. I think I liked Jarrad Davis more. That might change as Evans has some excellent traits.

3. Tremaine Edmunds - Two games in And ugh. Too slow to be a significant starter and doesn’t impact the game enough. Thought he might be a Zach Cunningham who, despite his flaws, I thought was an influential LB. Edmunds is not that good.

4. Marcus Davenport - Intriguing. Looks raw but the athleticism and power is definitely there. Would like to see him as a linebacker for the Pats rather than a DE.

As for needs, I’d take LB, QB and either a pass rush capable linebacker, strong safety or DE with the other pick.

Forgot to mention this the other day, but I think part of the reason you liked Davis more is that he had more experience at the position, which let him play faster. Evans was a DE / OLB until just this year, so he's relatively new to the position. Davis was more of a dedicated LB. Imagine Davis here instead of Roberts or Harris? That would be pretty fantastic. Evans still has some growing to do, but I think he could be a very solid addition with some positional flexibility in our multiple fronts and coverages.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked Evans a lot - that spin move! - and would gladly have him at 32. The reason I mentioned Davis is just that I saw some Davis in his style of play although Evans’ ability off the edge adds a string to his bow.

A ton of draft talent on display tonight.

Fitzgerald of Alabama and smith of Georgia will be off the board by 32.

But Evans (u of a), Harrison (u of a) Payne ( u of a ) Ridley (u of a)should all be there at 32. What is bb to do?

Ridley is getting a lot of buzz as WR #1 this draft season. I think he has all the skills you look for in a top guy, but Hurts isn't the most prolific passer in the world. I'm not sure Ridley is there at 32. Evans is my guy, but I could see an argument made for Harrison, as well. It all depends on how the team grades Richards. Personally, I'd rather see a #37 Harrison again. ;)

I think ridley will be drafted way before we're on the board anyway. But if he was available do you think the value is too high? If he has a real qb throwing him the ball i think it becomes obvious hes the no. 1 receiver. His route running ability is ridiculous and he has some pretty good hands to go with it.

No college corners can cover Ridley, but Ridley has a running back throwing to him so no one knows how good he is.

Plus because the Alabama qb is so horrible, Ridley has developed bad habits that will need to be cleaned up,
