Central Thread For Mourning/Canonizing Jimmy Garoppolo

Lots of mental gymnastics you got going on here. Whatever convinces you lol.
What you call “mental gymnastics” is actually quite easy to understand, but since your preference is to have things dumbed down for you, I’ll make it as simple as possible:

When, in the salary cap era, has any team ever gotten more in trade for a guy with 8 weeks left on his contract?

I'll dumb it down even more. When have potential franchise QBs ever traded for second round picks?

Hell we had a thread here in the off-season about what to do with JG and majority were saying he should fetch for multiple first rounders haha.

Can we bump that just for sh!ts and giggles?

The "Cassell is worth multiple first rounders" thread was a real laugh riot also. Lets find that one as well.

For the sake of argument, at the time that thread happened, Garoppolo, had he been traded at the time, would have had time to put his new team (just say for the sake of argument that he still goes to the Niners) into the playoff hunt over the life of his current deal. What would you trade for a guy who could take a team scraping the bottom of the tank and make them a borderline contender overnight?

Obviously with only a few weeks left on his contract, that no longer became true because of the amount of season that had already been played. So clearly he commanded far lesser value then than he might have in the offseason if BB had been prepared to roll the dice then.

So if we got a second for him at the nadir of his value (cost of using his value to mitigate risk with Brady instead of maximizing trade return) those multiple firsts, or first-and-seconds, aren't particularly unreasonable.

Who was offering more?

20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.
It was said repeatedly before the trade so hardly hindsight.

Teams don't typically issue press releases about trade possibilities, but it's quite easy to see they could have gotten more.

The Chargers watched Brees hit FA but it's irrelevant because in the history of the NFL no team has had a Tom Brady still playing at this level in front of the potential franchise QB. In today's NFL the 49ers wouldn't have been able to keep both Young and Montana if Montana was still winning super bowls.

I’ll ask again. How much and when?

So JG is a future HOFer, the definite next Steve Young or Aaron Rodgers and already a franchise QB that the Patriots cannot replace.

So much hilarity in this topic.

Apart from the fact that nobody is saying that, really well argued.

Yet BB and Ernie and Nick and the rest of the brain trust felt it was worth more than an extra pick or a bump into the 1st round to keep him around till the trade deadline.

I'm not sure why so many have so much invested in thinking that the brain trust made a mistake.

Maybe they should consider becoming 49ers fans and let the rest of us enjoy the rest of the Brady run in peace.

Most have been brought up the Patriot Way and considered JG TB's replacement. I don't blame them for being disappointed. JG looked like the real deal and could have kept the Pats train rolling after Brady was done.

I'm not much of a SF fan but I was pulling for them vs the Jags, for the good of the Pats seeding. Now they can go back to losing and improve the Pats draft pick.

SB49 put me at peace and 51 has kept me there. Nobody can ruin those memories.

Why are we talking bout Brett Favre?

Unless you were talking about Rob Johnson?

In which case my apologies.

Jimmy is looking really good but he hasn't even played a full season. I'll judge how good he is after next season. I've seen many quarterbacks with loads of potential not make it in the NFL for long.

No sh.t?

I have been seeing and hearing that kind of crap everywhere.
Everywhere, really.

Should be easy to find and quote a few examples of posters here then saying:

JG is a future HOFer

JG is the definite next Steve Young or Aaron Rodgers

JG is already a franchise QB that the Patriots cannot replace

I can think of a team that lost a franchise QB for nothing: San Diego when they let Drew Brees go. That's what happens when a QB becomes a free agent (like Garoppolo was going to be). Is that what you would rather NE had done?

Now that I've answered your question, please answer mine (if you can).

No, it's not even remotely "easy to see" they could have gotten more. Except for perfect people with perfect 20/20 hindsight like yourself.

Agreed. And i bet you a vast majority of the people crying here are trolls and the rest of them have had too much EGGNOG

All of them were said so yes it should indeed.

Including the idea that the Patriots lost out on a likely franchise QB in JG and probably can’t draft another. You don’t need to look far for that last one.

Like I said. Hilarious...
