Sorry, its been awhile since I've posted on the board but was wondering what the heck is going on with Butler. This kid has still been our best cornerback in my opinion and the most consistent and I'm really really hoping we can sign him to a long-term deal after this season.

Anyone heard anything on this or know anything. Thanks!

I'm guessing that a lot of future player financial arrangements are in limbo at the moment due to current caps space limitations. The Pats currently have less than $3.3M with some incentives and game-by-game roster bonuses yet to be paid out of that this season.

Apparently, a lot of the cap space that the Pats otherwise would have had right now (and been able to rollover into next season) has been eaten away by injuries. IIRC, Miguel recently posted that the Pats have around $25M in cap space sitting on IR now.

Also, IIRC, Miguel's most recent estimate for the Pats starting 2018 cap space (including rollover) was only around $16.5M - not a lot to work with when it comes to signing someone like Butler (along with signing other in-house FAs and new FA acquisitions, as well as leaving some in the emergency/injury-replacement fund for the 2018 season).

There are a few relatively easy moves the Pats could make to free up another $10M or so, but that's still not a lot to work with.

Time for a Brady and Edelman restructure.

I don't see Butler playing here in 2018.

It may be better to make a priority of re-signs guys like Lewis, Burkhead, Amendola and perhaps even Solder.

2018

CORNER
Gilmore, J Jones, Rowe, Bademosi
(C Jones)

SAFETY
McCourty, Chung, Harmon
(Richards)

We have an excellent secondary, going into the offseason. I would think safety may be more important than keeping Butler. After all, Patricia likes to use 3 safeties a lot. That leaves no backups except Richards. Of course, Belickick is like to add a corner or two, just not at Butler price.

Time for a Brady and Edelman restructure.

Edelman is signed thru 2019 (age 33) at a reasonable $4.67M cap hit each season. A restructure that extends him thru 2020 might be possible, but wouldn't create significant cap space.

Another 2-year Brady extension that converts all but $1M of his $15M salary to signing bonus would save maybe $10M (after recalculation of the signing bonus proration). That's the biggie.

Extending McCourty another year could save another $3M or so (also a relatively minor gain).

Extending Cooks would likely be significantly more involved, but could save around $5M in 2018.

Bennett and Dwayne Allen (if the Pats want to keep them at all) are also possible restructure/extension targets, but also relatively minor gains.

Of course, all those "minor gains" eventually add up to real money.

The "relatively easy" moves, though would be cutting Branch, McClellin and Harris, which would immediately save a net of almost $7M.

So say we cut Branch Mccellin and Harris and go heavy in the draft and free agency at linebacker.
Does anyone have a list of all our free agents next season and a list of possible target at the lines and at backer?

LB seems like it may be a point of emphasis in 2018 acquisitions, for both immediate contributions and for the future. WR also, possibly, given the ages of Amendola and Edelman. Perhaps safety as well, since the depth isn't ideal (heh) and both Chung and McCourty turn 31 during 2018 Camp.

Those seem to be the positions (aside from QB) where there needs to be some building for the future.

I’d feel better about corner without butler if jones hadn’t immediately been cut back to 1 snap when Rowe first became healthy. That tells me jones at corner is out of necessity not choice.
With Chungs age I think we need to draft a strong safety type.

Only time will tell. This organization has been well run for many years so be prepared to be surprised next spring.

We need to hire whoever does the contracts in Seattle. They’ve got like 37 guys making big money

The cap must be crap

don't forget 'Dola. although, does he have anything left in his contract to give back?
He is practically paying the Pats to play at this point. They need to start thinking about a slot receiver though. They have had it pretty darn good for while. DA will be in camp next year though, for sure

I don’t understand the general feeling by some that Butler is expendable. I wouldn’t want to do without him this year.

Yeah, and they are in cap hell also. But I am sure you knew that and were just trolling for a response. Or is it you are stupid and dont know what you are talking about.

I cant keep track anymore.

Bro, I feel like you may need to release some of that built up frustration. Lemme buy you a lady of the night

You just show up. You are a lady. At least I hope so with all that fawning over Jimmy G. If not. Its ok if you are gay Bro. Nothing wrong with it.

But lets get back to football. On the Salary Cap issue for the Hawks. You either knew they were in Cap Hell and were doing your usual trolling. Or, you diddnt know and were ignorant.

Man up and just give me an answer. If you did not know they were in Cap Hell tell me. I can buy that. I can live with that. We will teach you bro. Its ok.

So if Butler walks, who are the two main CB's? Gilmore & Rowe ( Yeesh..)? Maybe draft a CB.

I think a pass rusher needs to be a priority for the draft too. Same with Wide receiver ( Hogan, Amendola, Edelman, Mitchell tend to get beat up and/or mids too much time).

I'd like to see a Tight End get drafted. Gronk will be 29, with lots of mileage on that body.
