One of the worst offseason moves by the Patriots ever. Can't believe how much he's getting paid. Couldve brought back Bennett for just a bit more, and wouldve gotten way more production out of him .

Except I think many were surprised by what the market was for Bennett and what he eventually signed for. Marty was about to get paid, and said it himself that teams pay a ton for Super Bowl champions.

If you can prove the Pats knew Marty would sign with someone for $7 million per year and still let him walk so they could make the Allen trade, you can really criticize the move. With the info we had at the time, it's no more than simply not a good move in hindsight.

In hindsight it was a terrible move. I'll leave it at that.

Marty talked his way out of the door post SB. Bill wasn't going to pay that attitude. Allen is taking up a lot of money per production, same with Harris but they aren't locker room fracturing malcontents like Springs or Thomas. This can't be judged even in the same tier as the worst off season moves by BB.

Is there a reason to think that 2017 Patriots Marty would have been 2016 Patriots Marty and not 2017 Packers Marty? Based on their play this season, the correct answer between Allen and Bennett on their current contracts is none of the above.

Another week of Blutarski for Allen

Zero (targets). Point. Zero (receptions).

I loved it when they picked Bennett up last year but I thought his athleticism was diminishing, and that’s the strength of his game. Allen hasn’t played well but I’ll give him the season to show whether belongs or not.

Only 6 snaps in the last game, confirms my impression that his blocking last week was putrid, and unacceptable. Obviously the coaching staff has shown their dissatisfaction with what they saw in that game. And please don't tell me it was a "strategic" move to decrease his snap count when the gameplan design clearly involved abusing the Jets safeties, as Gronk did.

Agreed, although as I mentioned in another thread, is it possible that we're forcing them to stay in a lighter package by running out of 3 WR sets, since we know teams aren't going to respect his receiving ability? I haven't seen the numbers as it is just a thought, but I'm guessing the personnel may change a bit if we trotted Allen + 2 WRs out there.

I'm certainly not sticking up for him and have been mentioning the same about his overrated blocking. I'm just wondering if they tried something a bit different with his low snap totals? It will be interesting to see if he is used as nothing more than a backup TE to Gronk with limited reps moving forward.

Not including the plays where Devlin is used as a lead blocker, obviously. Just wanted to clarify.

We may have the answer to this question when we see how often they ran out of 3 WR sets. If not, it's quite possible that they simply prefer having Gronk and Devlin on the field, and see Allen as nothing more than an expensive backup TE in case of injury.

Bb has always said you want your best players on the field. If he was good then Bb would have found ways to include him in more than 6 snaps.

Well, that's the thing. He has been used on many more than 6 snaps in every game but last week, or at least 4/6 games. The question is whether or not any of it is matchup specific, or if he is simply falling out of favor.

Having 2 WRs, a RB, a FB on the field would obviously have the potential to change personnel a bit, as opposed to using more 3 wide sets. Perhaps this is something that @Tony2046 can keep an eye on when reviewing the all-22 film.

Ultimately, we may not know until the coming weeks when we see how he is/isn't used. It just seems very odd that Belichick would pay someone 5.8m to sit on the bench, that's all. That doesn't make much sense.

Ignoring the player and looking at the matchup, it makes a lot of sense to use less #2 tight end and more fullback when there isn’t an edge rusher worth doubling and when there’s a run defense liability to exploit at ILB. Both of these perfectly apply to the Jets.

Next week should tell us a lot, since the Falcons have Vic Beasley and better linebackers.

My thoughts about the situation are that BB has some moves in mind. First, it wouldn't surprise me if he activated Will Tye off the PS this week and waived Jacob Hollister. Then, if Hollister clears waivers, add him to the PS. In the meantime, try to work a trade for Allen, getting a mid-round draft choice in return, and reactivate Hollister. Also, at this point I feel Harris is a place holder for McClellin and will be released once he is eligible to be activated.

Didn't realize that Solder was being split out as a TE, yesterday. Maybe that lights a fire under Allen's ass. Should be pointed out the PFW is jumping on the "Allen's blocking has not lived up to expectations" thinking.

Basically, we've got absolutely nothing back from free agent acquisitions and draft picks other than Brandin Cooks and Dietrich Wise, at least for 2017. Belichick decided to forego the draft this year in exchange for free agent picks (Cooks, Ealy, Allen, Gilleslee) that have yet to work out through almost half the season, and the picks that we did make (Rivers, Garcia, Wise, McDermott) aren't on the field aside from Wise.

We're also on the hook for at least a 4th for Eric Rowe next spring.

Perhaps Belichick doesn't consider Allen a better receiver than Hogan, Cooks or Amendola.

It is quite possible that (as many considered Bennett last year) Allen is an expensive backup for Gronk. Bennett saw reps because of Gronk being injured.

That's what he is an expensive backup who was paid to be a bigger part of the offense. I hope you are not the type to say we pay guys to sit on the bench, or be a player coach.

I am surprised there is not more discussion of these moves, which have been disappointing to date. Toss in the Brissett for Dorsett trade and it looks like Belichick uncharacteristically lost more than he gained. Of course Gillislee still could break a couple and emerge as a power back, Burkhead should return soon and looks like a solid receiver at least, and I think Dorsett has shown better than his stats. Guy looks pretty good to me and Bademosi has been a pleasant surprise. It is harder to make a case for Allen, but I still haven't written him off completely. Develin is quietly having a career year which might have something to do with Allen's difficulties. Can you think of another guy who had such a disappointing start turn it around? I cannot.

Yes, sometimes you pay backups to sit on the bench.

The obvious situation is QB. We want to have a quality backup. He is really valuable only when there is an injury.

Our offense has a solid set of receivers, and also a fine set of running backs (even with one out).

This season, the offense is not built for a 2 receiving TE's. With Gronk, we have all we need from the TE position, other than occasionally needing a blocking TE in the game.

So, the issue for the GM, as it was last year, was the same. How does one prepare for the possibility that Gronk is out. Who would replace Gronk in the offense that used one TE. That TE needn't have any use whatsoever unless Gronk is injured. If Gronk is injured, the backup needs to be a blocker and pass receiver. However, the more important role is to be a blocker in a one TE set, a blocker who is a potential threat to catch a short pass or a dump off. Ideally, he should be able to be able to catch an intermediate pass.

With Gronk healthy, we don't know whether All can perform the role for which he was signed, a single TE. We guess that since he hasn't done well as a second TE in a 2 TE set, that he is therefore unable to play his primary role, if it ever needed. My bottom line is that if Josh is comfortable that he is OK as a Gronk replacement, Allan can ride the pine.
===============
So, for me, Allen is an expensive backup for the second most important player on the offense. Sure, we're nervous that Allen won't be ready if he is needed.
