Pats 1 for 6 on 3rd/4th and 1

The QB sneak is not a play call, it is an always-available audible for Brady to "call" by goosing the center. If no sneaks are happening, it is only because Brady isn't getting favorable reads for them.

Do you know what our stats were for 3rd and long? They seemed to have less difficulty converting those.

Hmm. I dunno. Seems odd they were run constantly before and never now.

He might prove me wrong, but so far I view him as a JAG. If he was above average I doubt the Bills would have let him get away over a few million. I have seen nothing from him so far

I'd rather they pass on 3rd and 1. Running on 3rd and 1 seems to be an automatic 4th down.

Obviously, we need better play by the OL, both in getting a push in the run game, as well as improving a bit in the pass protection.

I like Andrews a lot, but I suspect his size has taken this play out of TB's audible set when TB looks down at the NT over Andrews. And that the pats were previously almost 100% using it before may mean the Ds are lining up to stop that first on third-1.

But I still think some of those run plays would have worked if they ran them to the LT-LG gap and not up the middle and right. Run blocking is just not there yet, which is kinda weird considering how many of the young guys were better run blockers in college. Maybe they need a short yardage OL and they switch them out (would waste lots of time-be disruptive, but ??).

I would expect that to mean teams have adjusted their fronts to take that read away.

We don't have the type of back that can grind out third and short with any consistency. Burkhead's money should have gone to Blount. We already have two other guys who have the same skillset in White and Lewis who are both better than he is. And they could have found a guy of Gilleslee's talent level for far less money. The RB position was badly mismanaged this offseason.

i wasn't referring to this year, but "generally" you have a better %. 4th and inches is better than 4th & 1 and punting unless you're down late or in no mans land.

Pats this season are:

3rd&4th and 2 yards or less:
3/9 in picking up the 1st with 3 pass plays and 6 run plays. They are 2/6 on the rushing plays and 1/3 on the pass plays.

3rd and 3-5 yards:
2/6 in picking up the 1st with every play a pass play.

3rd and 6 yards or more:
12/27 in picking up the 1st with 22 pass plays and 5 run plays. They are 11/22 on the pass plays and 1/5 in the run plays.

So yes, that team is better at picking up the 1st down on 3rd and longs than 3rd and shorts/mediums.

You might have been facetious there, but this is EXACTLY what's happening.

Why the FECK would Skippy run Gillislee - or Blount, or Corey Dillon, or Sam Cunningham, or Jim Nance - straight up the middle, where THE ENTIRE DEFENSE is waiting for him, and ESPECIALLY behind the relatively lightweight interior trio of Thuney, Andrews & Mason? Those 3 do not, and will not ever, gain enough push to make any cracks in those brick walls.
Sweeps, stretches, off-tackles etc. are the type of short-yardage runs that will produce much, much more success because of the athleticism of both the C/Gs and the RBs.

Right; but I bet those audibles usually change one pass play to another, or a pass play to a running play, or a running play to a pass play. I'd be surprised if Brady ever audibles out of an A-gap run and into a C-gap run, for example.
I still blame Skippy first, then Bill, then Brady, then the OL, then the RB.

Brady has clearly audibled from run to run throughout his career. So if you're going to blame McDaniels, you should also blame Brady for not seeing it at the line of scrimmage.

Except that Brady has said the QB sneak is in play but they haven't gotten the right look.
