If memory serves, the Patriots are 1 for 6 on 3rd or 4th and 1. This is a very disheartening statistic. A team should be able to get 1 single yard more than 17% of the time. These are possession downs. Failure to convert 4th and 1 is no different than a fumble lost.

I swear, I feel better when it is 3rd and 5 than I do when it is 3rd and 1.

On the bright side, if this is a problem they are able to fix, it will make them quite a bit better than what we have seen.

Our offense is averaging 9.9 yards per pass (would tie the NFL record) & 3.5 yards per carry (a typical mediocre running game).

I think currently having a historic passing offense paired with a work in progress running game may have something to do with it. I’d probably trust Brady more on 3rd & 5 with these weapons rather than a 3rd & 1 Gillislee run too.

that 3rd and less than 1 call running out of the shotgun was perhaps McD's worst call of the day yesterday

Well he was 1 for 5 on the other plays from one year out.

because Josh is getting too damn fancy for his own good and overcomplicating a simple play.

it's 1 yard. I dont care that the other team knows what's coming. You line up with Brady under center, have the center fall forward and Brady follow right behind him. Guaranteed 1 yd every time.

Basically at the moment Josh and being bad Josh and trying to outsmart teams for no reason

drives me nuts when they pass on 3rd and 1

oh i don't mind a pass on 3rd and 1, especially if it is a long run

but 3rd and inches you smash it......no one really stuffs the QB sneak, either

but the run out of the shotgun is meh in that situation.....

What happened to the sneaks? Brutal play calling.

I keep thinking the same thing. Those were unstoppable.

Have to think they're not called to protect Brady.

There were at least three tries that gilly failed on, at least give Lewis or white a chance. It seems they are forcing the issues with some players , like trying Richards at lb before realizing their mistake. I would never complain about Brady throwing on these 3 and 1s, or risking him on sneaks when we have a group of backs that are paid to run it, at least until the run into the playoffs.

And he did throw it on the last one, which was a drop (?/would have been a tough catch) by Gronk.

I could not agree more. This team HAS to get better at these situations. Hopefully this is something they will work on and improve as the season progresses.

I know it goes against common convention, but I actually prefer they pass on 3rd and 1 (as long as it's not a deep pass to Slater).

What does their 3rd/4th and 1 rate say more.......they miss Edelman or Blount?

if they really want to protect him, tell the Line to do their job!

We don't have the type of back that can grind out third and short with any consistency. Burkhead's money should have gone to Blount. We already have two other guys who have the same skillset in White and Lewis who are both better than he is. And they could have found a guy of Gilleslee's talent level for far less money. The RB position was badly mismanaged this offseason.

agree with regard to Burkhead
disagree with respect to Gillislie
