Hernandez family suing Patriots because Hernandez had CTE

Wasn't there already a billion dollar CTE settlement?
The plaintiffs in this case were not a party to the lawsuit, so a prior lawsuit (which some players opted out of anyway) would not factor in here.

Actually, that's where you are wrong. CTE does affect the way a person acts, there have been large personality changes as per some of the research, including fits of anger.

That being said, I think Hernandez was well aware of what he was doing and why he did it. There has been evidence of him quite possibly being psychotic, and that could have been the case well before football.

From all the profiles I've read, some of his problems started as early as high school, let alone college or the pros. There are certainly violent tendencies that come about as a result of CTE in some cases - witness Junior Seau battering his wife and then killing himself - but Hernandez's were cold-blooded and continual. Note that Seau had Stage 4 CTE, which presents as dementia and violent tendencies, whereas Hernandez's was Stage 3, which may cause bizarre behavior and difficulty with recall and vocabulary but not aggression.

That said, I don't doubt the CTE made a difference in some way and it's impossible to know to what extent, but most descriptions of him were that of a textbook sociopath. Some of his more bizarre behavior where he seemed to have broken with reality, attributed in many of the profiles to synthetic marijuana use or whatever, is probably directly attributable to CTE.

The dominoes here would fall in every direction if the league lost this case. If a court ruled the NFL was responsible for Aaron Hernandez killing himself, it is not that much of a logical leap to conclude they are also responsible for Aaron Hernandez killing Odin Lloyd (and these actions would be taken in a civil court of law, not a criminal court of law, so the fact that Hernandez is technically not guilty of killing Lloyd would not matter)

Eh, **** Hernandez and **** his family. They personally profited more than enough from his career. If anyone should get a payout over Hernandez being a homicidal piece of **** it's Lloyd's family.

If the NFL loses this case, then football as we know it will cease to exist.

Good! Down with the NYJFL*! Nothing would be more satisfying! I want them to implode!

Tell me again... what proof that CTE caused his suicide?

I don't know man. My only interest is in seeing the NYJFL* implode.

Dude kills people and his family gets money from it **** outta here.

Oh you think the 32 owners are better than the Hernandez family? I'm not gonna tell you to get the f*ck outta here. I'm gonna challenge you to do proper research on how corrupt and immoral the 32 owners are. Hernandez family morals > 32 corrupt owners morals

He had issues at Florida, which are fairly well documented at this point, so I'm not sure how far the case will go against the NFL, which can go screw for all I care. I'm just not sure if this one will be the one to hit the league hard on the CTE issue.
Stories like that, coupled with the just-released study showing the negative neurological consequences of playing football before the age of 12, makes it more likely that more people will stop their kids from playing the sport. The more evidence that mounts up, the more pressure there will be on parents to understand that kids who decide to play football are making a decision, while still minors, that could affect them in a significant way for the rest of their lives.

I'm NOT saying that to grind an ax, since I think that Football is a sport that builds character and responsibility in children and teenagers. But, at some point, the evidence of its risks will pile up to the point where the weight of that evidence tips the scales and, as a result, the risks are viewed as greater than the rewards. I think that's now becoming inevitable.

I have often heard that his bizarre behavior and his criminal tendencies started at the University of Florida, if not before. If this is true, then nothing that happened in the NFL seems to have altered his behavior in any way.
I thought i heard the same thing too, so since he was a thug in college how can they honestly say it was the nfl that caused the cte that resulted in his behavior? Sounds like they got an ambulance chaser for a lawyer.

A study of deceased ex-Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez's brain revealed a case of Stage 3 CTE.

Stage 3 CTE is associated with "cognitive impairment and trouble with executive functions like planning and organizing." Hernandez was one of the youngest ex-players to be diagnosed with the brain disorder, which is the result of repeated head trauma. Serving a life sentence for murder, Hernandez committed suicide in April.

he didn't seem to have any difficulties planning Lloyd's murder....

Uhh so Hernandez’s family r upstanding! Yes? I’ve been around Lawyers b they DA’s or private all my professional life. This is the epitome of “Ambulance Chasing”

What if AH had CTE from all the football he played before the pros. Like 16 or 17 years of football or whatever. Where is the proof that the NFL caused this CTE?

Also, I think the NFL sucks but I don't want it to crash and burn just yet. Let BB and TB retire first.

Oh and the Hernandez family. **** them. They helped create this psycho and shouldn't get a dine. Money goes to victims.

I'm not particularly worried about the NFL, TBH. If it can be persuasively shown that the sport itself is at fault for so many of its players being pieces of garbage, then that's the cherry on top of the **** sundae. I love the Pats and I love watching football, but enough is enough at a certain point.

I'm far more invested in the last part, which I totally agree with. He and his family can both **** off, they don't deserve some payout on account of AH being a murderer. If it turns out that the NFL and the Patriots are somehow at fault here, then the money should go to the actual victims here. And that would be the Lloyds, not the Hernandezes.

Just waiting for OJ's autopsy some day. My guess is they win. Perhaps not against Patriots but NFL.
I hope hernandez' lawyers win and get awarded $1!!!

Scumbag

he didn't seem to have any difficulties planning Lloyd's murder....

He drove the wrong way on the highway and had drove Lloyd back to right by his home, and he left his security cam on. He had a pretty crappy time planning.

Aaron Hernandez Found to Have Severe C.T.E.

Honestly, this changes things. It means that even though he had problems prior to the NFL, head trauma pushed those things along to another level.

This guy was in the league for only 3 years. It's scary if he indeed have it. Idk.

No one knows how long it takes to get CTE or how quickly it increases in severity. For all we know it could have taken 10 years of sub-concussive hits or two really bad hits.
