Jordan Richards . and STAR position

Absolutely not.

No one was saying any of THOSE players were too slow or weak to play in the NFL.

This kid does not have the athletic ability to play pro ball. It's abundantly clear.

.

You should revisit those pages then..;)

And really . are you calling BB incompetent . for drafting a guy that “does not have the athletic ability to play pro ball“?

Richards couldn't take a straight like to a ball carrier if there were guard rails leading him.

Worst. Tackling. Angles. Ever

You really should quit while you're behind.

Keeping Jordan Richards on this roster is nothing short of a slap to the faces of Patriots fans everywhere.

You lost all credibility on this when you compared the athletic ability question to Cannon, White and Blount.

Yikes.

That was pretty much what people were saying about James "Robert" White.

From one of our more august members here:

3. I'm very sad to say that there hasn't been a SINGLE run made by Robert White that would lead me to believe his an NFL quality RB. I doubt he has a single yd after contact this preseason. Yes he made a nice catch coming out of the backfield, but we have a bunch of other guys who can do that, and also add to more to ST's. I will be very disappointed in BB if White gets a roster spot. Why? Because it will mean that he got that spot only because he was a late 4th round pick. I'd like to think that one of BB's best qualities is that he's very comfortable admitting personnel mistakes and moving on. Personally I thought both Gray and Finch showed a LOT more than White. In a roster so tight and so many decent players fighting for a spot, giving one to Robert White just because he's a draft pick, would be a waste.

The above summarized by another prolific poster:
This makes me very happy that we drafted James White instead of his slow, weak brother Robert.

Sorry, just having fun.

White was a tremendous athletic disappointment his first two years.

Incidentally I'm liking the new search feature.

So you think belichick is trying to hurt the team? Why?

What a terrible analogy!

Those posters were talking about a player in TC who was a ROOKIE and had no NFL experience whatsoever yet.

By his 2nd year, White had caught 40 passes and was already an active part of the offense.

Richards has shown ZILCH and is in his 3rd SEASON.

Fail.

The 2nd poster there (who very well could have been me) is making a funny comment about PFK's post (I'm assuming it was him, because who else makes so many malapropisms regarding players' names :) ).

The 1st poster NEVER MENTIONS anything about White being non-athletic. He's just saying he wasn't good at all. That is different. Plenty of pro-level athletes aren't good and cannot play at that level - - but not because they don't have athletic ability to do so.

Jordan Richards doesn't have the athletic ability to do so. He's smart, but a brain cannot tackle.

BTW, dig down far enough and you will find plenty of posts everywhere about how this Edelman kid should be cut, how Amendola is a complete bust, MCourty doesn't turn around at CB and should be sent home, etc. It's fun, but you are shooting at fish in a barrel there.

I don't remember any of those posters (in such multitudes) screaming that those players have no speed and are physically too weak to play. You do understand that difference?

Premature hate.

Richards hasn't contributed on the field, but through no fault of his own. Chung has been remarkably healthy last few years.

Belichick kicks the tires on dozens of safeties every offseason. If he didn't see something in Richards he obviously wouldn't be here with the quality of the competition in TC every year.

If I'm asked to decide whether Belichick has made a mistake in his evaluation of talent, or if the fans have made a mistake in their evaluation of talent...whelp, sorry guys! Gotta go with the goat.

Jake Bequette lasted until his 4th TC.

Filthy ransom pictures are powerful tools, bro.
.

I can't be sure, but I don't think team building is always about having the absolute best athletes or players at every position. There is a decent chance that BB's "if you help us win, you stick around" extends to qualities other than purely athletic talent. Maybe there WOULD be someone who could provide 5% more on field production, but that Richards adds more to the team than what we see.

I'm totally not a fan of Richards...terrible tackling in the open field and slow. Belichick may have something with moving closer to the line of scrimmage. I'd like to see how that goes for the next few weeks. Perhaps a Star is born.

.

And Jake Bequette never recorded an NFL stat.

Richards has 20 tackles, 2 passes defended, and somehow a forced fumble.

I'm rewatching the 3rd preseason game.

In the first Qtr.

1. Recovered Tate's fumble.
2. Stuffed the runner after a two yard gain.
3. Chipped a receiver while in zone coverage. The same receiver caught the ball and was tackled short of a first down.
4. Tipped a pass intended for Riddick. Incomplete.
5. Looks like he got confused when switching coverage with Gillmore on two Receivers running a crossing route.

He had a decent performance overall in the game. He did miss an open field tackle in the third qtr.

No doubt that he hasn't impressed on the field, but judging by the little smile on Belichick's face when he talks about Richards, its obvious that he loves the guy.

I think as @rookBoston said the judgment is premature. He's being tested in a new position and needs time to adjust.

To say he isn't athletic enough is just asinine. He took on and shedded TE blocks. He covered a few RB's out of the backfield and wasn't fooled by late screens etc....

Is he an all pro? No. But can he take on the new star responsibilities? I'd say it's yet to be determined.

What does that even mean?
It means, simply, that Bill would sometimes rather keep a player who "knows the system (especially on defense)" ahead of players who are superior - in some cases, far superior - athletically, but in Bill's eyes aren't quite the Good Soldiers as some of his pets are .

Perhaps Bill keeps these stiffs around as some kind of example to the other players, as if he is subliminally telling them: See, look at (Jordan Richards, e.g.) and how hard he works; if he's trying his best, why aren't you trying your best?

Of course, it could also just be a case of Bill not wanting to admit so quickly that he fecked-up yet another top-100 draft pick, again.

Or it could all just be a case that youn are wrong and bill belichick actually knows what he is doing.

Because if there's one thing we know about Bill, it's that he definitely wants to hurt his team because he's too proud to let go of a mistake.
