Pats trade Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for Phillip Dorsett

Just an FYI

Field Yates is best friends with belichicks son, Steve. And BB is close friends with Yates father. So you can always trust Yates as a great source. He's one of the brightest minds in the NFL, and a super super classy nice guy

This is worth the gamble. Although I'll miss Jacoby, this has HUGE upside written all over it.

If anyone can maximize Phil Dorsett's talent, it's TB12

That also solves the PR issue.

I am all in on this...I still can't believe we made this kind of deal with our hated rivals...

Philip Dorsett didn't have a bad year in a crap Offense last year Bonifide Deep threat and good dept for the recent Edelman injury. Brady will let us know how good he is. I like his upside Philip Dorsett third year Breakout???:D

I agree Biscuit is not a NFL caliber Starter...glad we cut our losses.

I agree with that... I took that tweet as a more JG future type of comment along with the "don't read into the tea leaves tweet by Curran.

I just don't see the Patriots going into next season with a rookie backup with Brady's age even though he wants to play until he's 45.

Have to believe JG is the future. Can't imagine the Pats gambling on that next year.

Insight from a former teammate.

Definitely worth giving Dorset a try. He has the skills and could really help lessen the blow of Edelman being out for the year.

A recent 1st round pick WR for a 3rd round, third string QB that doesn't profile as having a future with you, nor fill a need with JG still on the roster. This is a steal of a deal. Just yesterday the talk on BST was whether or not Brissette's roster spot was safe. I like this deal a lot.

Exactly my point. Drafting out of need is how you get stuck with players who don't live up to their draft status. BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, plain and simple. Its what everyone preaches bill does, and look what happened when he forgot that approach. With the way we made trades (hicks), and signed FA's (branch) is easy to argue that picking brown over collins was a huge mistake.

Historically, round 1 has been where they've addressed area of need.

BEST PLAYER/ATHLETE AVAILABLE is what he does in round 2, not round 1, and it's been very hit or miss.

There is no reason he can't run those routes. He has. He won't step into edelmans shoes but he could.
This offense doesn't have assigned roles, it morphs and eveloves yo the players but uses the same principles. Some of what Edelman did no doubt will be taken up by hogan.

Right...Miami and Buffalo who, combined, have had two playoff appearances between them in the last ten years.
That was meant to be a completely separate post. Sorry dude.

There's no reason Hogan can't play inside, but there's a damn good reason he won't. He has the best chemistry with TB on the outside going deep since Moss. They're going to mess with that for Phillip Dorsett? I'd be shocked.

People seem to have the wrong idea of what Edelman's been doing for this team. He's not Welker. He doesn't live in the slot and go outside occasionally. He spends about half of his time on the outside. The key is the productivity when he does go to the slot.

A common misconception around Edelman is that he replaced Welker in the offense. He’s asked to align in many more places than Welker. In 2013, Edelman spent 49.5% of his snaps in the slot, and it would be much lower if Danny Amendola hadn’t been injured. In 2014, Edelman spent 42% of his time in the slot, and increased to 51.2% in 2015 and increased again to 53.5% of the time in 2016.

So Edelman spends roughly half his time on the sideline and half of it in the slot- and he’s the most productive receiver in the league coming out of the slot.

Edelman “averaged 2.42 yards per route run out of the slot, the highest mark in the league,” according to Pro Football Focus. “No slot receiver was more likely to be thrown to when lined up there than Edelman, who was targeted 29.1 percent of the time he lined up in the slot.”

Could Patriots WR Julian Edelman see more time in the slot?

I like this trade. Dorsett is young, fast, a returner and has a decently high ceiling as wr. win win.

Andy, I've always genuinely appreciated your analysis.

Please tell me your thoughts on the Patriots QB situation going forward.

The thought of this being Brady's final season here makes me feel my childhood

is over, though I'm 38.
