Tough Cuts - C. Jones, J. Richards, B. Bolden, K. Van Noy, J. Freeney,

PS (or attempted)

Foster - RB
Carr - WR
Lucien - WR
Cole - OT
McDermott - OT
Travis - S

A few more will make it but those are my priority.

As to borderline guys and cuts.

QBs - Not much to say. I don't see how you can cut Brissett when there is a good chance you lose someone next year.

RBs - Again not much to say but it is hard to let Bolden walk. He was one of the last cuts. He had a down year last year as far as STs. He needs to bounce back and show something to make this team. Nice to be reminded though he is a competent all around back up RB if nothing else but that isn't enough.

TE/FB - Develin stays cause he adds physicality. Hollister takes the last spot. Schematically it might be better being someone else but it is about who shows up and does well then worry about Scheme and what you look for fit your team ideally. Other guys needs to show they can play and block at the line to beat hin.

WR - Not much to say here either. Top 5 are hard to knock off. Carr and Lucien are 2 of the top 53 players IMO but only so many guys allowed on the field at one time. Maybe they carry one but it be tough.

OL - Sad to only have 8 guys. I picked Flemming as the 8th solely on experience. A 9th guy be nice but no one i think they need to carry. A lot of good young ones to put on the PS though who should make it.

DL - I think at this point you can't let Butler walk. He has shown too much and you need to hold out to see him in a real game. A young promising disruptive DT is too much to pass on. I was thinking of letting Ealy walk but you just don't have enough experience at DE. If he is cut you need to bring someone else in and there are no good options. Unless he forces them to cut him he is safe in the end i think. Particularly with the Wise concussion.

LB - A tough spot as the Patriots say farewell to some players. However in the end it feels like cutting hair between JAGs. Langi has really done a lot to claim a spot and deserves it. His upside is big too unlike everyone else who has hit their ceiling pretty much and we know what they are. If you wanna say Van Noy is in over Roberts or someone else that is fine. I see it as an unimportant argument as ideally they are just STs guys who never see the field.

CB - Moore over C. Jones - Jones has just not shown any value to this point. Moore has a lot of upside and wasn't targeted I think at all in that preseason game. The question is what does Moore give on STs... But Cyrus has shown he gives nothing there to this point either so go with the upside.

S - Not much to say except it is time to let Richards walk I think. This could still turn around but he does little on STs really and if he won't see the field I don't see a lot of value.

I'm hesitant to place much emphasis on the Jacksonville game in regards to roster projections, simply because so very many (a league-high 37) players did not play in the game.

For example, while Hollister looked good, to me it is premature to put him ahead of other tight ends (O'Shaugnessy, Lengel) that we have yet to see play in a game this preseason.

A side note on the returning linebackers:
- Van Noy averaged 36 defensive snaps per game with the Pats in 2016, and 10 ST snaps per game.
- After the loss to Seattle, Roberts had a grand total of 28 defensive snaps over the next five games; from that Seattle game forward he averaged 12 defensive snaps per game for the rest of the year. He wasn't a factor on special teams in 2016, with just 19 ST snaps all year.
- By comparison McClellin averaged 27 defensive snaps per game over the entire season, plus 20 ST snaps per game from the week 7 game at Pittsburgh forward.
- Bottom Line: based strictly on 2016 I would rank both McClellin and Van Noy well ahead of Roberts.
- Assuming that to be the case (and that David Harris makes the roster), then that would leave Roberts battling Langi, Freeny, Bates and Ellis for either one or two roster spots, depending on whether the Patriots keep 5 or 6 linebackers.

We've had a decent enough look at all these guys to get a solid read on them:

Offense is all set. O'Shaughnessy showed a decent amount of receiving ability & paired with his ST prowess, he's the 3rd TE.

Fleming has looked noticeably better than any other trainwreck at tackle outside the starters & played well last season.

Burkhead vs. Gillislee for starting RB carries during the season will be a healthy competition.

Brissett...Yeah why not I guess.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ealy played relatively well last night besides the penalty. He's on the team by default at this point.

Butler can play DE/DT & has shown flashes at both. One of two UDFAs that should make the team.

If Roberts injury is severe, do we go Bates or light at the position? (Freeny no thanks)

Langi's earn a roster spot as a developmental inactive 3-4 OLB/standup rusher behind Hightower & McClellin.

The team will give Cyrus another year. Coleman's played well this preseason. I'd probably keep him over Richards.

A pair of ST aces as 4th safety may be risky but Ebner vs. Richards on the field may not be that much of a difference.

Foster is a very tough cut at this point. There is no doubt he'd be more than adequate if the RB position wasn't so loaded. He seems like a second year leap candidate. Furthermore, Bolden is a BB fav - that cut would be tough as well. Maybe not for fans, but I'd not be blown away to see him on the team based on ST play + BB's affection for him. Or, BECAUSE of the respect BB has for Bolden, maybe he is an early vet cut to allow him a chance to get picked up.

Lewis showed us last night why he's back. When right, that guy is gold.

IMHO, you are a bit light on ST's cutting Grissom, Freeny and Richards. I see one of these instead of Roberts or Langi.

I also think that a backup SS is more valuable than a 6th corner. Perhaps, this SS will come from another team if Belichick doesn't think that Richards is good enough to be a backup, the 9th position DB (after 5 corners and 3 safeties).

Jonathan Freeny
Harvey Langi
Kenny Moore
Lawrence Guy
Keionta Davis

QB - The pros and cons of two vs 3 QBs has been discussed elsewhere; with JG in the final year of his contract, Brisset stays.

RB - I just can't find room for Bolden, despite his ST contributions. No room for Foster.

WR - It would be really nice to keep Carr, but it is probably going to take an injury for that to happen.

TE - Close call between O'Shaugnessy and Hollister.

OL - Could easily go with one more lineman, such as Jamil Douglas, and remove the final LB.

DL - Pats will likely add a veteran not on the team right now, which would bump Davis to the practice squad. Absent of that I'd rather give him a shot than Grissom.

LB - Since the Pats are in the nickel more often than not, they could go with five LB rather than six. The tossup between Freeny and Trevor Bates would be the odd man out in that scenario. A veteran not currently on the team is a possibility here as well.

DB - Final CB is up in the air and could easily be Justin Coleman over Moore-Killings-Likely. You can see which side of the Cyrus Jones and Jordan Richards debates I am on.

Nice list, with a few nitpicks.

On the OL do you think Garcia will start the season on IR? I would include him and lose McDermott.

Another defensive lineman or two would be nice; I would add A Butler. Though to be fair there will likely be a lot of gray area with definitions of positions this years between OLB and DE.

Along with the above, seven LB may be too many. I would remove Trevor Bates.

Perhaps drop a DB (Coleman) for another DL as mentioned above.

I'm struck by the fact that every roster posted in this thread has Ted Karras as the sole backup for 3 starting positions. (IMO none of the backup T options have any real positional versatility.) That scares me a bit; I'd really like to make room for Cole Croston as flexible depth.

EDIT: Yeah, I realize that's easier said than done. Still working on my own PatsPicker lineup!

You can stash Douglas and Croston, but at the end i think Garcia goes to IR and Croston finds a spot. I don't want Waddle at all

Edelman, Slater, Garcia, Rivers to IR

I think they expose Brissett to waivers in hopes they can sneak him back on the practice squad.

Last two on: Richards & Ferentz
Last two cuts: J. Jones & Boldin

It would not be shocked, if the Pats traded one of the Running Backs.

I cut J. Jones at CB, kept Brissett at the 3rd QB slot and kept only two TEs. I like O'Shaughnessy a lot. ( I also want to see Shaughnessy rip O'Shaughnessy, or "Shank rip O'Shank."

I added a player named "Pickup" at DE - there's somebody out there who is going to get released and find themselves on the best team in the league next week.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on keeping Brissett. He impressed the hell out me at camp - great arm, threads needles and is gutsy. For my money he starts over every non-Patriots QB in the AFC East except Tannehill. I agree that Karras is the backup center although the picker had him at guard. Is Slater on IR? I picked him as a WR while he should be on special teams.
