46 Man Roster (updated to 49) - Lots Of Room At The End Of The Roster

HEY,

It gives us something to ponder....If you already knew who the 53 locks were in preseason, it would be no fun ;)

IMO, half the fun of following football is seeing how the roster is ultimately composed, the other half is watching the guys play football games.

Not sure anyone noticed but it was Freeney who put Roberts out of commission.....

So players cannot be put directly on IR without first being on the 53, or do they need to be on the 53 to be eligible to return?

I'm thinking it's the latter, and we can put injured players on IR now if we know we won't need them later.

My understanding that putting someone on IR before the cut would mean that the player would go through waivers. Usually, injured players aren't picked up, although Belichick has done so. I would think that a playoff team would claim Slater. A young team would claim Garcia or Rivers.

Unless it has changed recently, players with four or more years of service time can be immediately placed on Injured Reserve prior to the cutdown to the 53-man roster. That means the Pats could place Slater on IR now if they so desired - though with a roster of 90 players, there is little need to do so at this time unless you know that the player is out for the entire season.

However, players with less than four years of service time must first go through waivers ("waived/injured"). Another team can claim that player, but that designation warns them that the player is injured. That is what happened with Jake Ballard a few years ago. It is also why Derek Rivers has not yet officially been placed on IR, but Ryan Tannehill is already on IR.

After the roster is set at 53 any player can be directly placed on injured reserve.

I think Butler goes in for Rivers.

Wow, our depth at linebacker right now is very thin...Not a big fan of either Roberts or Freeny.

I think the final spots may come down to Grissom, Bolden and Coleman. I'd like to keep another safety on the team but Richards has been less than impressive and I don't see anyone else being more than a practice squad player at this point.

CHANGES
1) Add O'Shaughnessy
2) Add Fleming
3) Add Ealy
4) Add Langi
5) Add C Jones

ROSTER (51 plus 2 open)
There will roster spots opening after some roster players are put on IR (e.g Rivers). The final cuts at cut time could really be anyone. The cut day choices have more to with roster tactics and strategy than the individual players. As far as need, I would think that we 2-3 more special teamers. We might even cut down to 51 anticipating signing players from other teams.

Wow, our depth at linebacker right now is very thin...Not a big fan of either Roberts or Freeny.

I tend to disagree. Of course, I expect Hightower to be healthy soon.

As you know, we usually have 2 linebackers on the field. Our first four are very solid, IMHO. Langi is an OK prospect (I think that we both think that he is a better prospect than Roberts).

I would note that Chung is often on the field as a LB. Finally, I like Freeny as a STer. And, he is probably one of the very best #6 or #7 LB's in the league. Seriously, he knows our system, and has started. Patricia has no problems with him in there in dire cases (two injuries). That's not bad for a #6 LB.

I'd be shocked if Garcia doesn't go on IR.

Amendola shouldn't be labeled as just a PR. He's a bona fide WR who plays the slot, which just so happens to be our bread and butter on offense. He has long time experience and a good rapport with Brady. As a matter of fact, he was the very first guy Brady brought up when asked about how they'd fill the void left by Edelman.

The issues are the fact that he isn't as quick off the line/out of the break, and injury history. We will have to see how he looks when given the chance.

I think the 49 listed is light on safety and DE, 1 more of each makes it 51 (not sure exactly who the names are, but pretty sure that will be their positions)

I think we're at 51 w/ two open spots (most likely OL, WR, or CB)

I believe that Belichick likes to have 2-4 more special teamers than you do.

I didn't mean to suggest that Amendola was ONLY a punt returner. If that were so, I would have listed him with the special teamers, as I did for Ebner, King and Slater.

IMHO, Amendola is such a good receiver that I don't think that we need a 5th receiver on the 53, presuming that Mitchell is ready for the season.

Sorry, I read the PR designation incorrectly. You were simply including the PR designation in addition to the WR skill set.

THE FINAL FOUR

OFFENSE (add 1)
For me the OL is the only issue at this point. If Garcia takes a roster spot, then Waddle needs to there, in addition to Fleming. If Garcia doesn't take a roster spot, then the issue is whether we add Croston as our #9 (in addition to Fleming and Waddle. I guess that we should be keeping 9 OL's in order to keep more OT developmental players.
