He started the first game last year as a 6th round rookie (while Shaq Mason recovered from a broken hand) and was nothing special, but he didn't wet the bed either. He played half of the second game and pretty much disappeared after that, other than a few special teams snaps. Coming into training camp, he appeared to be on the bubble.

Everything I heard and read is that he is having an outstanding training camp. Obviously, a year of Scar will make anybody better, but he is appears to be making the second year leap. Here are 3 of many examples:

1. From the BSJ when it was free:

THREE UP

OL Ted Karras: Was outstanding in one-on-ones and team drills. Right now he’s playing backup center to David Andrews, but if Karras keeps this up, don’t think it’s out of the question that he could make center a competitive position. He’s a lot bigger than Andrews, and that may be worth looking at for the coaches.

  • Andrews had a tough time with the bull rushes from Valentine, and then Brown.
2. From Karen Guregian

UNDER THE RADAR

There are a few players who quietly have stood out, and others who just started to come into focus thanks to injuries to players on the first team.

In the first category, offensive lineman Ted Karras has looked good all camp. He plays guard or center and could push for a starting job. The versatility makes him a quality backup at the very least.

3.

Karras was amazing. MVP in my book. Deserved his own thread here. Chatham called him “pocket cleaner“. At C he looked dominant every snap both in run and passing game. Looks like he can't be moved. I don't know about his IQ and leadership compared to Andrews but he looked like a starting C there. Very solid at both G positions as well. BTW - he played in the kicking game as well next to Grissom!

At the very worst, he's a reliable backup center and guard at a very inexpensive price. At best, he could be starting at center or guard sometime this year with great upside. IMHO, as well as he's playing he finally deserves his own thread!

Karras looked great against Jacksonville, I'm optimistic that we've found a strong backup interior lineman who might have legit starter upside. Sort of a new Dan Connolly type, but potentially better.

Dan Connolly is actually a very fair comparison (not automatically style wise but value wise). I think he is that kind of guy.

Maybe there's a reason why mangold never hit the radar.

Just thinking out loud.

Need Mongo in the thread title

"Me hate you remind Mongo no read!"

Yeah but he we unfortunately just extended the undersized Andrews after his poor postseason performance (both Houston game and SuperBowl), because he came so cheap (I believe he's one of the if not the cheapest OL in league with a multi-year deal not on rookie contract). Andrews might be decent value, but with Karras on rookie contract, even that might not matter. How much of Andrews' contract is guaranteed.

There is nothing unfortunate about a UFA like Andrews developing into a starting-caliber center Brady is comfortable with and being extended.

He was not poor in the SB. If you review the game film, you'll notice the sacks were not on him.

Cool. Well competition is good. And depth is good. Good to hear Karras is coming along so well. Cannon developed well behind Solder and Seabass and look at him now........... manhandling J.J. Watt today in practice. Hope Karras keeps coming along.

The Patriots made a deliberate choice to extend Andrews; they could have easily just kept him n his UDFA deal this year and then given him a first- or second-round tender next year.

So clearly they like what they have in Andrews (I'm guessing his football IQ helps).

The Mangold situation has been a bit odd to me. I can appreciate the fact that he really didn't want to participate in TC and that he's still looking for top dollar, but we haven't heard a peep in terms of rumors or links to any teams. Reiss claimed that he was still going through physical therapy at some point in early summer, so perhaps he's more injured than his camp is letting on.

Either way, I just didn't see him as much of a fit here, due to what he'd cost, the fact that he's lost a step or two, and what I deem as a fairly effective group of IOL.

I posted a picture once of Andrews jacking up Suh. He is smaller but he has technique.

And IIRC he took the job from Stork. Or am I insane again?

2015, Week 1: Stork starts season on IR, Andrews starts 10 games, Pats go 10–0.
2015, Week 12: Stork returns to the starting lineup, Pats finish season 3–5.
2016 offseason: In TC, the QB/C pairs are GOAT/Andrews, GOAT apprentice/Stork. Andrews wins job, Stork ends up released, Pats go 17–2.

It's worth noting that the Patriots are 27–2 when Andrews starts, and 24–1 when Brady and Andrews start.

That is an amazing stat. Wow.

Thanks for that.

He's a poor man's Dan Koppen.

...and that is not a bad thing.
