Kony Ealy - bold prediction, won't make roster

Guy will probably be playing some DE, too. Van Noy is another player who can fill the role at times. It will be interesting to keep an eye on the position, but I don't think it's time to panic.

Quick!

Name two Patriots DEs who you know can hold up against the run.

First, we don't always hear about every player getting in the dog house. So how do we even know how players recover from getting in it. Most of the players we hear about in the dog house tend to be players very deep in it, not first time offenders. We find out when guys get benched.

Second, there are many examples of players recovering from being in the dog house. Seymour was benched for half a game and recovered. Welker recovered from the Rex Ryan foot incident. I think early in the Belichick tenure, McGinest got in the dog house before he recovered.

Third, we have no idea if Ealy is in the dog house. Plenty of players have been sent home for being late and were never in the dog house. We know about Randy Moss who was not in the dog house after being sent home.

Belichick has a zero tolerance policy about being late. He benched Seymour for missing practice for his grandmother's funeral. Ealy could have had a legitimate excuse for being late, but it wouldn't matter. He was going to get sent home. It doesn't necessarily mean he is in Belichick's dog house. He will have to do more than being late for one practice to be in the dog house.

This isn't a case of tardiness, which is what you are referring to with the Moss or Seymour incident of being late / missing practice, or the communication policy issue with Welker. Those were relatively minor compared to an issue of work ethic and buying into the program.

Apparently in OTAs and Spring sessions he didn't stick around after the practice like players usually do and clocked out. His work ethic ticked BB off so he was withheld from a couple of spring practices. This work ethic issue has followed him recently as well and now he was withheld from the first practice of training camp.

I think this guy doesn't get in that you can't be coming to collect a paycheck, that you need to work harder than you did at Carolina etc. And I am predicting it's too short a time-frame for a change of character.

Assuming a lot here.

Where is this coming from?

Opposing teams HOPE Harris Goes out in coverage.

Certainly we have major concerns about our pass rush, ability to set the edge and overall depth at DE.

As for the comments about Harris though, dont be so sure about that:

Harris was the 35th ranked linebacker in the NFL last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Harris had an overall grade of 77.6 in 2016. He was very good in pass coverage with a grade of 80.2. He was OK in run support with a rating of 69.0.

While it sounds like many people feel like Harris is declining, his PFF grade has been steady over the past four years.

Harris recorded 95 tackles in 2016, which was the first time since 2011 that he didn’t record over 100 tackles in a season.

Harris is 33 years-old, the amazing thing about Harris is that he’s only missed six total games during his 11 year NFL career.

(Came across the above info from a Giants blogger last June) New York Giants should think about signing David Harris)

If the playoffs were a preview to the above of what could happen full-time, Ealy wouldn't even be needed:

3-4 DE: Flowers, Brown, Guy, Wise
NT/1 gap DT: Branch, Valentine
3-4 OLB: Hightower, Van Noy, McClellin, Rivers
ILB: Harris, Roberts (only 1 is on the field in the 3-3-5)

You have these spots all mixed up.

Yeah I'm still trying to learn the alignments. What you said about the 2 DL 2 OLB alignment was true up until after the Seattle game. Then we see a ton of the above? Isn't that a 3-3-5?

Had a lot of free time between graduation and starting a job last couple months so I looked at every playoff play. Curious to know what that D is

This is how I judge it.
I don't care who is standing up or down, I care more about there role. Meaning we very often have a guy who plays a 43 DE role standing up.

Belichicks 3-4 had 3 300 LB + guys and a 260-270-ish OLB/de that will rush and 3 LBs who mostly cover.
Belichicks 43 had 2 300lbs and 2 260-270ish DEs plus the 3 lbs who mostly cover.

So when we have 2 300+ we play 43 type schemes and when there are 3 we play 34 type schemes.

The difference is that difference of a 300 over or a 260-270 guy is the difference of stronger vs run or in the pass rush. With the way the game has gone, mostly always sacrifice the run d a little for the rush.
I think guy may change that a bit this year.

I'm in the kick the tires on Dwight Freeney camp.
Any recent defensive ends that we're highly touted who have failed at the NFL level?
Where are my draft gurus?
Would like to see a list of free agents or a player buried on a depth chart that is miscast or in need of a change of scenery or top coaching.

Makes sense with the weights. Flowers/Wise are like hybrid edge/interior players in that 270 lb. role. And yeah hopefully Guy can change things.

I just got a call from Brandon Merriweather. He wanted me to remind everyone that, just because the roster is thin at a position, does not necessarily mean that Belichick will keep around a guy with a crappy attitude.

If Ealy's not buying in, Belichick will cut him loose and head into the year with a JAG if he has to. It won't be the end of the world.

I never count on rookies to be anything more than situational players in their first couple of years. Rivers' lack of DI competition and experience puts him further behind the developmental curve. And calling him "our first draft pick" doesn't change the fact that he was picked at the END of the 3rd round.

BTW- I really like Rivers as a prospect and loved the pick once I saw some tape of him. But to count on him to be anything more than a back up situational player this season would be a mistake. Nor do I think BB will allow that to happen.

I have no high expectation of Ealy other than to be as good as he has been his last 2 years in Carolina. Anything more would be gravy.

My problem is that our starting DE's are Flowers and Ealy. And I'm concerned that your best pass rusher has been more effective rushing from the inside than off the edge. So it is a very legitimate concern to wonder where are the edge rushers that the Pats have count on this season. If Rivers is one of those being "counted on", then DE IS a weakness on this team.

David Harris arrival has already made a difference. It allows Donta Hightower to play the position that Nnko did in his prime, a hybrid OLB/DE

High is a proven NFL pass rusher that should be able to produce 7 to 9 sacks a year from the LDE/SOLB position along with an occasional burst through the A gap. Meanwhile Harris provides the MLB and Defensive play calling mantle.

Hightower is a linebacker and Flowers' ability to hold up against the run is TBD
Flowers held up just fine against the run last year.

Besides some of the others mentioned, Dietrich Wise should also be able to hold up vs the run.

Given that Nink is gone..he's making it

Ealy & Mychal Kendricks play two TOTALLY different positions & are also two TOTALLY different sizes. Not sure where the comparisons are. Oh, wait; there are none.

Ealy DE/ DT- 6'4 275 lbs (positional versatility)
Kendricks OLB/ILB- 6'0 240 lbs

Although I do like Kendricks as a football player.
