David Andrews about to Sign Extension

Didn't he allow like 1 sack this year? wtf are you all talking about? Clearly BB disagrees.

Tough and smart. I like it.

EDIT: Line sucked with Stork and his headbobbing

People seem to forget that bit about Stork giving away the snap count against Denver.. It was one of the things that he was critiqued heavily on.

I feel better about this deal than I did about the Cannon deal. Turns out BB and scar knew what they were doing with that one.

Does anyone know if Scar had any input on signing Andrews as an udfa?

I wouldn't call it presumptuous personally and i should have mentioned it depends on the contract too. If his pay reflects his ability and not a lot is guaranteed than it is fine in general. Looking now on what his contract is (which is the lowest for any center not on a rookie deal) it is an okay signing but committing to him long term with the caveat he is fine as is I think is a misstep if that is what they are thinking. I think they are projecting him to improve more though which he can a bit in any case.

If he does not improve and stays the starting center then it is a mistake and it's not even about the money. I saw the hits Brady took last year directly due to Andrews. He is too old to keep doing that. If those are the kind of hits we can expect Brady to take at that rate then having Andrews as your starter is a mistake. So yes I will take the stance if Andrews does not improve paying him to be your starter is a bad signing cause what i saw last year was not good enough and Brady took too many hits over it. I say this as a guy who hopes Andrews improves and stays the starter. I love it when UDFAs make good.

Yes i think last year he was below average. Not horrible just below average. I would say more like 20 better 10 worse. So not bottom barrel either but not average. We can agree to disagree there but from what i have seen NFL centers do in general it seems to me he was below average on the year in my opinion. We can agree to disagree.

The rings argument only applies to QBs and Coaches in the NFL. But you know that. We can talk about elevated play and choking for other positions of course but the actual win or loss is not controlled enough by anyone but Coaches and QBs to bring it up with.

There are other parts of body that are harder to measure than height, weight, arm length etc. but have a key part in making a successful football player. Brain f.e..

Remember AFCCG in 2015? Remember giving away the snap count etc.? Remember who was in command at C then?

Here some quotes from Howe's article to help you better understand the decision by BB&co: Source: David Andrews signs three-year contract extension with Patriots

quote:

Andrews, like any center, is trusted to make the correct calls at the line of scrimmage to slide blocking protections, which is pivotal with Brady focusing on the rest of the field. Andrews' ability to relay the checks in coordination with Brady has been evident since early in his rookie season.

Left tackle Nate Solder, who is the most-tenured veteran on the offensive line, strongly complimented Andrews' leadership in January.

- - - “It’s his personality, but it’s also the way he goes about his business," Solder said. "He understands the game. He takes a lot of time to better understand every opponent, and he is able to disseminate all of that information to us on the line throughout the game. I think that’s a strong strength that he has.”

Andrews flew under the radar last season because Solder and right tackle Marcus Cannon played so well on the perimeter and young guards Joe Thuney and Shaq Mason were so heavily featured in the running game. But among the five starting linemen, Andrews allowed the fewest sacks (1.5) and disruptions (12.5 combined sacks, quarterback hits and pressures) in the regular season.

By the way, Pats OL was 5th best in sacks allowed in 2016.

Really? Humorously enough, it wasn't the Andrews/Thuney combo that Atlanta tested (as the Texans did), but the other 3 guys. Anyone bashing those two for the breakdowns in SB51 might want to watch the game tape again.

Chris
I was clearly speaking in jest and making fun of the people who thought that people wanted to sign Nick Mangold because Andrews was a bum

I got you calling out those who wanted Andrew's head, but I was confused about SB51 being the reason. I *hope* that was part of the joke and that there werent actually people calling him out for that game. I don't read all threads so I thought I missed something.

Its always good news to have a young talented line. Andrews is a decent center, I did criticize him a lot because at times he was getting bullied up the middle against teams like the Broncos.
He is a bit undersized, Im okay with him coming back as long as we don't give him too much $$$$. Based on the stuff I've read he seems to be a good locker room guy and that goes a long ways for me. Last thing you want is a locker room cancer.

I don't have access to all the film, but I wonder if Andrews has managed to add some functional strength. He obviously has the brains and dependability and trust of the QB.

So much for the thought of moving Shaq Mason to Center, in order to take advantage of his athletic ability (and his pass-blocking inability).

Not sure about Scarnecchia, but Belichick reportedly reached out to him during the draft--twice. Obviously, near the end to let him know they were interested. He also gave him a nice paycheck to sign him as an UDFA. Clearly, Belichick wanted David Andrews.

I could be wrong but im pretty sure there were, but the worst was after the Houston game.

The OL has been completely made over. After this season, we will have all youngsters.

Was it ever reported how much of this contract was guaranteed?

That's one of those "people forget" things that everyone remembers.
The people who "forget" it are the ones beating the drum for Stork as if he was all that..

@Biffins - And just what do you disagree with? Because, unlike you, I can and did support my opinion with facts..

Team friendly signing according to Joe Banner - He shoulda' signed with Jacksonville

I think even though one could argue that the Andrews signing may appear a bit on the team friendly side, it still makes him the 11th highest paid center in the NFL on an average annual value basis.

Someone needs to pass that message along to Banner. Hopefully, we make him eat his words with the Rowe situation, too. He certainly showed some promise last year, but would need a solid year to justify the 3rd round trade, in my opinion.

This goes to show that bb loves the kid.

Any thought of upgrading Andrews is effectively over.

However we can still hope that mason improves as a pass blocker or karras/Garcia can slide into that spot,

Nah, he got signed for the kind of money that could stick around as a backup after being upgraded. 3-4M/year isn't that much in the league in 2017.
