Pats expected to hire another coach with John Carroll ties

I was half wondering if the Pats might look to hire old alum Brian Cox (late of the Falcons) to come home and help coach the DL.

An offensive line coach is joining the defensive coaching staff? Clearly he's being brought in to be trained up in case Scar hangs it up in the next couple years. I guess he'll work with the defensive linemen in the meantime.

The same would likely have been said of Caserio, McDaniels and a bunch of others who joined the staff as youngsters. Belichick seems to enjoy teaching the coaches, and looks for the intelligent and ambitious souls ready to work their tails off for little monetary compensation (seems to be part of his MO in locating those with a desire to be great as coach).

Known commodities seem like the rarity with him (unless he has worked with that coach previously).

Josh McDaniels started out with the Pats as a defensive assistant. Matt Patricia worked in college and his first Pats job as an assistant o-line coach.

Pats want their coaches to be well-rounded so they can understand the big picture, instead of specialists who only understand one side of the ball. It makes sense for a game planning team - best way to plan an offense is to know what the defense will do to react, and vice versa.

Sounds like wisdom. If you know how defense is coached, you have a better idea of how to beat a well coached defense.

Welcome to the Patriots, Mr Covington. May your time in Foxboro be exciting and successful.

He coached under a guy who was head coach at John Carroll - all the Pats need to know ...

I saw that, but it's John Carroll High School. Josh and Nick and others come via John Carroll University. Also, notes he attended the high school, and played as a WR.

The high school is in Alabama, the University in Ohio, and as far as I can tell, no relation.

Sounds suspicious to me, can't be a coincidence. JohnCarrollGate ®

Sounds like another "YES" man!
When are they going to get some guys in here to challenge
Belichick?! Then maybe they will win Super Bowls more often.

Agreed, but in 10 years he will be the hot assistant every other team is trying to hire away from the Pats to be their head coach.
