OT: NFL denies Josh Gordon reinstatement

Those trade proposals of including Gordon in a trade for Garoppolo on this board seems pretty foolish now.

They seemed foolish then too

For some reason people considered Gordon some incredibly valuable asset, but just like Michael Floyd (only worse) his value is significantly reduced because of all the overhead and risk that comes with the player

Yeah, as much as I share in the hate for Goodell and the testing protocol of the CBA, I'm having a hard time buying into this "all he did was have one drink" theory, unless he happens to have the worst possible luck in the world.

I know a guy right now who's on parole (fist fight), works two jobs, has a few drinks after work around 8-9 PM, and blows into the breathalyzer at the halfway house every night with no problem. Even blood and urine tests aren't detecting alcohol after a reasonable period of time. I know because I used to drink at night and give them in the AM myself, until straightening up and getting on the right track.

It's much more likely that Gordon has failed multiple tests for both marijuana and alcohol, as well as failing to follow directives set forth in his re-instatemrnt plan. I didn't even realize this was being questioned until this thread. I hate the process and I do agree that it is unfair, but a good portion of the blame goes to Josh Gordon.
OT: I'm always amazed at the consequences of fist fights for an unlucky few, while the majority of people go on without any punishment whatsoever.

Yeah, in this case, he did beat the dude up badly, breaking his jaw, but I certainly agree with you. Most get away with little or no punishment.

I didn't realize it until I checked, but Gordon hasn't played since December 21, 2014. If he's suspended again this year, that will be 3 years away from football.

The reason why Gordon's story attracts so much interest is he had that amazing 2013 season, but that was his only great year. I can't really dismiss that year as fluke because he put up 1600 receiving yards with the trio of Weeden, Campbell, and Hoyer throwing him the ball.

If he ever gets his head on straight and the league ever stops giving him the runaround, it would nice to see what Gordon could do. Even if he is reinstated, I don't think we'll ever see him realize his full potential due to the time he's missed.

Boy, does ******** spread like wildfire around here.

As I mentioned in another post, Gordon has failed multiple tests for marijuana, alcohol, and diluted samples. He's had drug possession charges, a DUI, has been kicked off of 2 different college teams, and has even been suspended from the Browns, too.

He's missed meetings, has been in rehab multiple times, has been known to hang out and party with Manziel, and continues to relapse and piss away just about every chance he gets. You can feel sorry for him all you want, but until he gets his life together, he will have to suffer the consequences of the punishment bargained for in the CBA. He's had the world on a silver platter many times with money and fame, yet continues to blow his chances. Boo hoo. I'm pretty sure it's not a freaking conspiracy where Roger Goodell is trying to screw the god damned Cleveland Browns. WTF?

No one said he should not have been suspended. We are questioning the reason he is still suspended.

Sounds like Mr Broken Jaw Guy shouldn't have stepped to your pal!

Seems to me like with falling TV ratings, you'd want as much talent in the league as possible. Gordon would've been probably the only reason to watch the Browns last year.

No one said he should not have been suspended.
Actually, lots of people are saying just that, attempting to blame Goodell, the CBA, etc, which is why I commented in the first place.

Hard to comment intelligently without knowing any facts about what's been going on in his life recently. I view this as similar to DeflateGate where the facts weren't known for months and yet people spent all their time reacting.

I have no sympathy for Gordon whatsoever. Smoking weed is not a big deal -- I hope it's legalized -- but that's besides the point. This is about following rules, and Gordon has demonstrated an inability to follow them. I don't care if this is the Yankees and the rule is as stupid as "no facial hair" -- you adhere to it.

This an athlete that has the opportunity to make millions of dollars living out a dream, and he has continually pissed it away because he cannot muster up a modicum of self-control. I'm so sick of the apologies for this guy. Some people practically make him out to be a victim.

Nice post, I've had similar thoughts. It's not easy to miss one year of football, let alone multiple years. There's valuable development he has missed out on. I really would have no idea what to expect if Gordon was reinstated and got another chance, but I doubt we'll ever see the elite upside that we got a glimpse of in 2013.

That's a fair stance to take, although I don't see the similarities of the deflategate accusations in the least. In Gordon's case, he's had plenty of run ins and made poor decisions by failing tests, diluting samples, etc. There's a pretty lengthy history, there. When you have issues with multiple college teams, have to go through the supplemental draft, and then come trotting into the NFL guns (or blunts) blazing, you're going to get everyone's attention fairly quickly.

You're right that waiting for the facts is always the best approach to take, but we know that he failed yet another test for marijuana about a year ago, and one can safely assume that it's pretty standard protocol to follow in terms of reinstatement. Hell, Martavius Bryant accomplished it. Abstaining from illegal substances, taking his required tests, perhaps some counseling or treatment, not getting arrested, etc. The fact that his agent quit on him several weeks ago is yet another hint that there's not much to read between the lines, here.

The Around the NFL Podcast folks said basically the same thing as you, which I agree with. We're pretty close to 100% unclear as to what circumstances drove this most recent denial of reinstatement. So, while it's definitely a tough break for Gordon, we don't have a lot to estimate whether he deserves this or if he's being treated unfairly by Goodell.

I agree with this fundamentally, but the frustration for a lot of fans is the fact that they test and punish for weed at all. Its not a performance enhancer, so you don't have to worry about any competitive advantage.. and the whole "what about the children!" is bull**** too because if you just didn't test, or at least not publicize it whenever someone pops positive for such a nonsense substance

Gordon is a great football player and is fun to watch on the field.. and the Browns desparately need him as well, yet hes currently banned from the league for smoking some weed lol....

Meanwhile, violent douchebags like Richardson can commit real crimes that endanger the lives of young teenagers (think of the children!) and can suit up every sunday for the Jets.. and there are countless examples of that in the league, i just hate the Jets and will use them in this example because **** them

Josh Gordon needs to kill a guy.

There's no such thing as one drink for an alcoholic. Once it hits the bloodstream they have no control. This might just be the best thing for him. I was a homeless addict. It wasn't until I hit rock bottom that I was willing to do anything to get clean and sober. most of us are the same. We are a self-destructive bunch.

Congrats on overcoming your obstacles. That is very impressive. Good for you, man.
