Competition brings out the best in players. Lewis will have to compete for his job. Bolden will need to compete for his job. Everyone competes for their job on this team.

Some players are just so far ahead of others, that the competition is not close.

IMO Lewis is not so far ahead of others and he will have to prove it. I hope he does.

As opposed to what? How many punts has Brandon Bolden blocked in his career? How many field goals has Brandon Bolden blocked in his career? How many punt returns does Brandon Bolden have in his career? How many kickoff returns does Brandon Bolden have in his career?

Bolden might not make the team this year because of roster additions. But the questions you asked above about his special teams play are terrible. The answer to the same questions but with All Pro Matthew Slater would also be zero. Does he suck?

Brandon Bolden's contribution on special teams has been grossly overrated.

So Burkhead and O'Shaughnessy had 1st and 2nd team all-pro special teamers racking up most of the tackles on their teams too ?

Also, since tackles is the end all, be all, consider that Dont'a Hightower was tied for 121st in the NFL in tackles last season. Every LB in the league with more than him last season is instantly better and we wasted our money bringing him back.

How many career punt returns TDs does Edelman have in which he was the only Patriot on the field?

Brandon Bolden is a special teamer whose days are numbered.

And I don't necessarily disagree with you. Other quality special teams players have been added that can also add more to the offense.

But I hope you don't think Belichick is going to look at total special teams tackles from last season and just keep the top guys from that list. It's deeper than that, and to act like Bolden is worthless because he doesn't have double digit tackles or TDs is shortsided.

What's so great about Brandon Bolden's special teams contributions?

Based upon the actions of the New England Patriots front office, the New England Patriots have actively upgraded special teams contributors.

The New England Patriots have rewarded Brandon Bolden's special teams contributions by paying Brandon Bolden less this year than the two previous seasons.

The Pats special teams as a unit last season was fantastic. That doesn't happen by having Slater, Ebner and 9 guys that suck at their job. If Bolden was simply awful at special teams, considering he added very little on offense, why did Belichick have him on the active game day roster week after week?

Having the opportunity and money to upgrade our roster doesn't mean every player that gets replaced is a crap football player.

Why has Brandon Bolden taken a pay cut if he was so great on special teams?

Gee, could it be because he had signed a multi year deal that just ended, and the market for him wasn't high? Lots of players sign smaller contracts every year. You're just grasping for any reason.

It's very simple. Is Bolden one of the best special teamers in the league? No. Is a solid special teamer worthy of a roster spot? Yes. (Belichick made that clear by him still being here) Is that roster spot upgradeable? Certainly. Do I think he makes the team, provided no critical injuries happen? Probably not. Would I be shocked if he does make the team? Nope.

That's my last post on this subject in this thread. Back to Dion Lewis......

The salary cap increased from $155.27 million to $167.00 million.

If Brandon Bolden was highly valued by the New England Patriots, Brandon Bolden would not have received a pay decrease.

Bolden is cheap, very good Special Teamer and most importantly he is someone who BB likes. There is something to be said about guy who is durable, practices hard and is a leader.

The only argument you'll hear from me is that he's probably not going to be the lead back/RB1/starting season 2015 guy (with Blount's suspension, of course) that some are suggesting.

I'd put his chances of making the team at around 75 percent, but his health and durability concerns are something to monitor, of course. Also, we don't know how much Belichick thinks of ST ace Bolden, so that factors into things, assuming everyone is healthy. I think Devlin is here to stay. Just my opinion.
James Develin signed a two year contract extension.

I do think that Nink is on the bubble. Love him as a player but he needed every ounce of athleticism he has to make it, and I think he's lost enough to make it tough to make this team. Sucks, but that is life in the NFL.

I don't think Edelman is done, I think the options they have can reduce his workload and extend his career a couple of years.

The redundancy Belichick has built into this roster is one of their greatest strengths, and it is going to carry them to #6.

It's bad scheduling for the rest of the East that they face the Patriots down the stretch because that's when they play their best football, and they are so much deeper than any of those teams that injury won't cripple them the way it does most teams.

I pity the fool.........
I think you bring up some fine points about Ninkovich, but I think he's got one more year here. I certainly wouldn't consider him a "lock," but I'd probably give him a 2/3 shot at making the team. As always, our hope is that someone younger and cheaper can show enough to make him expendable. Here is my reasoning, for whatever it may be worth to you:

--he has a lot of experience in our system and also provides good leadership. He's dependable, he's a Jet killer, and I think he's worth something in the vein of a Chris Long role

--despite his age and having lost a step or two, he still provides adequate depth as a rotational player

--he has versatility to play/backup different roles here, which is obviously important. He does what is asked as an end of line player, can set the edge, rush the QB, and play both with his hand in the dirt + standing up as an OLB in different schemes

--while we did address the position and are looking to get faster and younger, I don't think we're necessarily "there" just yet. I think Flowers is an obvious starter, but there's still some past inconsistency and issues with Ealy, so I'm not going to pencil him in just yet. Our hope is that at least one of the rookies will be blended in as the year goes on

I realize that Devlin has received an extension, but so did Bolden, so I'm not really sure what that tells us?

I would be leery to base my hunches about roster spots based on salaries alone. They can give us a hint, but they aren't nearly the end all, be all predictor that some make them out to be. We can absorb dead cap hits like any other year, particularly when they're as small as the examples that are provided.

We know that there will be good competition, so that's what the bottom line should be. Guys like Devlin and Bolden have proved to be solid players on this team in the past. We go through this same exercise with ST only players every year. In my opinion, it will be up to some of the other guys to knock them off. Maybe that happens, maybe it doesn't. We're pretty much just passing time 4 months ahead, anyway. Injuries and other factors often answer these questions for us.

At the age of 33, my fear is Rob Ninkovich loses his legs.

Brandon Bolden is currently paid the minimum base salary.

Hardly a vote of confidence from management.
