Todd Heap Tragedy

Someone had this happen in my hometown growing up to a little kid as well. Not sure how Heap gets passed this, he probably doesn't sadly. What a horrific tragedy.
This unspeakable thing has happened quite a bit; I first heard of an identical incident happening to a doctor.

Even a celebrity like him, with friends and a large support network, has suffered depression over this. No matter what, I know that Todd needs help, plus it's just a fact that any couple needs help dealing with the ultimate loss parents can suffer.

Sadly marriages often do not survive events like these.

Yup. Saw it on the local news. Still, how the hell does that even happen?

Such a tragedy.

it actually happens more often than you'd think...

Absolutely terrible tragedy... I don't think I would be able to continue on living

This type of accident seems to be more common of a tragedy than I suspected....50/week in US is unbelievable.....

It happened to my ex wife's brother 60 years ago or so....of course there were no backup cameras back then......

Prayers going out to Todd and his family....

An unspeakable tragedy. Suffice to say the exact whereabouts of a 3-year-old (or any tiny child) should be accounted for at all times.

Not that it changes anything but she was in front of the vehicle so backup cameras don't apply here.

What a horrible loss.

I can't imagine what he is going through. The loss of a child is terrible, but being involved in the tragic accident would haunt you every day of your life.

Prayers go out to the Heap family & let's hope they get through this tragic accident over time.

Sad. Can't have eyes everywhere at all times and he was probably seated up too high in the truck to ever see anything.

Even a typical sedan can provide such blind spots.

It's not worth the anxiety.

The backup camera was invented and (finally) is more common in new cars now based on incidents like this.

Supplemental backup lights could help too.
It's funny - my car has a back up camera and I cannot stand it. The side mirrors also point down automatically when you put the car in reverse. I still think I can see more the old fashioned way, even though I have to crouch down to see out my side view mirrors. As someone said above, before you have kids (or have some close calls with crazy things) you think it can never happen to you, but unfortunately, it can. All you can do is be hyper-vigilant about where your kids are, concentrate on your driving only, and always move really slowly.

Edit - it says he was moving his truck forward. It was probably a big truck and she was a small kid he couldn't see. How awful and how do you ever get over something like that?

Horrible. Happened to friends of my wife and myself 15 or so years ago.

Might not get over it. Horrible accident.

How about installing a backup camera? Now that I have kids, I can't live without one. Just too paranoid that the same thing could happen to me.

He was moving forward if I read that correctly.

how about not Monday morning quarterbacking one of the most horrific events that can happen to a parent.

Not a parent but I know a few. If this happened to any of them, I can think of one thing that would make an unimaginably awful situation even worse, and that's a bunch of half-informed lunatics leaping all over themselves to play the woulda-coulda-shoulda game in order to assert their own superiority. It's a vile and repulsive attitude and it needs to stop. They're gonna get enough of that without your help.

Yeah this does happen wayyy too much. Gotta always look and know your surroundings. Awful news

When I was a young lad (long time ago) a guy that worked with my father hit and killed his wife, sadly that marriage didn't make it through that tragedy. The guy was an angry curmudgeon his whole life after that.

If he killed his wife, of course the marriage did not survive. Or am I missing something?
