Sean Payton says Saints won't sign Malcolm Butler to an offer sheet

In other words, we might end up with the 32nd pick back, or some other stuff, or Butler will be playing next year in NE, and playing with his hair on fire so he can cash in.

Assuming another team doesn't sign him.

I also expect he'll get a new agent this year.

Agreed.

So keep him, let things settle down, try to sign him down the road assuming his play remains solid. If you can't sign him or choose not to, try sumthin' else. I don't see this as an alarming situation at all.

well its nice to hear confirmed from horses mouth what many people already saw as a logical strategy

and even better to realize we will prob have Butler on the team next year, and it would be a lot easier for us to sign him long term next offseason as compared to this offseason

I agree with everything except the part about it potentially being easier to sign him next off season. Why do you think that? He's unrestricted next off season.

Jeff Howe tweeted that Butler no longer wishes to be a Patriot. As much as I would like him to stay another year or more, not looking good.

There are actually people who still believe the Patriots and Saints never discussed Butler...lol.

What are you talking about?

Well, the options are now:

1) Keep him
2) Get ripped off

I'll believe that when I hear it from Butler himself.

If Jeff Howe is a reliable source, then the Pats would be better off cutting ties for whatever they can get for him. How you could not want to be a Patriot is beyond me.

If this is the case, the Pats may as well just keep him.

of course he wont

Time for the Patriots to save another career. Keep him for this season, let him be the CB2 to the better and younger CB (Gilmore) and continue to play on a team that allows him to look like a top 10 player at his position. Then he can cash in with some bottom of the barrel team that will be willing to pay him top CB money. Of course, outside of NE he'll suck, but at least he'll have his money + 3 rings.

I'm beginning to believe that Butler really is pissed that neither the Pats or anyone else isn't willing to give him top of the market CB Market. If that's true than he's REALLY getting some bad advice. Mayo has a great take on this on his ex-Pats podcast.

Basically he would like to tell him, to grow up. Sign the tender. Get some insurance to cover your injury risk this season. Play the year like mad, and then go out and break the bank.

According to Jerad, Bultler is acting like he's ENTITLED the big money, and he really isn't. That is NOT the deal the players made. In fact the RFA rules are actually an improvement for the players over the past CBA, in that the tenders are higher and it does allow at least for the possibility of some movement. It took Hightower 5 years to get to FA, what is Butler *****ing about after just 3

I think Butler is a great story, and he's a great player. He's the archetype Patriot player. He's tough, a great tackler, dependable, hardworking and above all skilled at playing his position. BUT he is also wrong in this situation. He isn't wrong to want the money. He's wrong about blaming the Pats for his situation. He's wrong about caring that Gilmore got the money that he wanted. Gilmore is another guy who waited 5 years for he shot at the market. It was not an apples to apples situation.

Why the hell would he resign here next year when the Pats gave his potential $$$$ to another player???
