Most assume such a haul would improve NE in other areas and more than offset any downside of relying on JB instead of the more polished JG were TB to get hurt, and a backup was needed for a solid NE team for the playoffs or SB.
Sounds good on paper. But I was just thinking, how much impact does a first year player usually have on a NE team? Say we hit on both this draft, and get a Mayo and recent similar pick #30-36ish, M Brown, D McCourty, Ras I, D Easley, P Chung types in similar spots. And another of that same list a year later.
After seeing those names / quality we should expect for the 12th and 2nd rounder, I'm no longer as sure its a wise move. The 12th might help now, but how much more value added on such a stacked team. Both players will take a year to develop at least into hopefully any real impact maker, and #33 won't be a major impact at all until he does. Their rookie years where if TB goes down and we're counting on them bridging the gap between backup QB levels, it's even worse. Neither will probably see more than 15-20% of snaps.
So now my friends here at PF, after seeing some of the actual talent and impact we'll get in return at those trade spots, are you still as confident? Is it still worth losing the more quality backup capable of leading NE thru the playoffs and beyond for this not so awe inspiring contribution we'd expect to see if we needed it this year?
At least, it sheds some light on why BB is demanding as much as he is. It's just not worth it otherwise. He really will need to be blown away.
