Thoughts? If NE gets 2 picks for JG (the 12th and 33rd) in 2017. 2nd in 2018

Most assume such a haul would improve NE in other areas and more than offset any downside of relying on JB instead of the more polished JG were TB to get hurt, and a backup was needed for a solid NE team for the playoffs or SB.

Sounds good on paper. But I was just thinking, how much impact does a first year player usually have on a NE team? Say we hit on both this draft, and get a Mayo and recent similar pick #30-36ish, M Brown, D McCourty, Ras I, D Easley, P Chung types in similar spots. And another of that same list a year later.

After seeing those names / quality we should expect for the 12th and 2nd rounder, I'm no longer as sure its a wise move. The 12th might help now, but how much more value added on such a stacked team. Both players will take a year to develop at least into hopefully any real impact maker, and #33 won't be a major impact at all until he does. Their rookie years where if TB goes down and we're counting on them bridging the gap between backup QB levels, it's even worse. Neither will probably see more than 15-20% of snaps.

So now my friends here at PF, after seeing some of the actual talent and impact we'll get in return at those trade spots, are you still as confident? Is it still worth losing the more quality backup capable of leading NE thru the playoffs and beyond for this not so awe inspiring contribution we'd expect to see if we needed it this year?

At least, it sheds some light on why BB is demanding as much as he is. It's just not worth it otherwise. He really will need to be blown away.

I'll take 5 years of the 11th pick and 4 years of the 33rd pick over a guy holding a clipboard for 16 games. We won't win it with Jimmy G at qb. Barely, won it
with TB12 the GOAT. Me thinks you're really over-rating the impact a backup
qb has.

Is this a Butler thread or a JG thread? It's hard to follow anymore...there's so many new variables:rolleyes: to each story that have not been discussed in one of the many other Butler or JG threads.

Should hold out for #1 and #33 this year. Plus a 2nd or preferably a 1st next year.

That way we can get Garret with the #1 pick and address one of our few areas of weakness (DE depth).

And which as your post makes clear is perfectly fair. If Browns get an impact player at a position of need then so should the Patriots.

It's not what you or I think JG's impact is worth. The point of the post, is what does BB think JG can do in an emergency. If he feels he's good enough to give NE a reasonable chance to win, he'll need a lot more draft capital in return to pry him loose. So far, all indications point that he's not giving him away as cheap as many expected. I simply posit here an explanation why it might be so.

So you make a statement, then when people disagree with you, you state it isn't what they think it is what Bill thinks. Great post!!!!!

To misquote, hell, pretty much mangle, a famous Yogi Berra quote...

I regret the lack of developments that made this thread unnecessary.

the pats are going to get 6 2nd round picks for him

What, we're flying pigs again?

Huh?
Solder, Mankins, McCourty, Mayo, Jones were all starters from Day 1.
Seymour took a few games to get the starter's nod and the rest is history.
Graham, Warren, Wilfork, Watson, Hightower, Brown were important rotation pieces their rookie season eventually securing starter status soon after.
Most on that list are considered foundation pieces during these two decades of success.

I'm not interested in reading any hypotheticals until Andy and Ivan have had a nice 20 page discussion about the merits and intricate details of them. Will check back tomorrow.

I don't expect anything to happen until draft day. I would imagine Bill has the parameters of a deal simular to the one you suggest in place and a list of 4-6 players he wants around #12. If one of those players is still there after #11 the deal goes down if not then Jimmy stays and I trust Bill completely to make that call and am totally fine either way. A legit difference maker cheap for the next 5 years or the best backup in the league for at least one more. Win win in my book so time to sit back and wait for the deal to come to us.

If Garoppolo isn't our next qb I want it to be Sam darnold. So I want a shot at the first pick next year

Thank you for starting *another* JAG thread. Your random speculation is certainly worthy of a new thread.;)
