That was the discussion and consensus on the NFL network round table.

My question. Why would New England give up their leverage where they'd get a 1st round pick for any team who signed him? Why would they take LESS?

Makes no sense whatsoever. You tell me, a 2nd round pick or a year with Butler (worst case scenario) and even two years if you want to franchise him.

Butler is worth a 1st round pick. And the Pats have the leverage to get that compensation for him. Can't imagine Bill Belichick being that nice to anyone, pals or not with SP.

Perhaps an entire new forum should be created just for Butler.

I don't think it will be just for a 2nd rounder unless another pick or two is included. But Belichick will do whatever he thinks is best for the team. In Bill We Trust.

Well, BB traded Jones last year for essentially a late second round pick, and based on contracts, one could argue that Jones (pass rusher) is a more coveted, and thus a more valuable player.

BB traded Collins mid season during a super bowl run season, for a 3rd round pick, and most agree Collins is a freak athlete and gifted individual, and according got paid extremely well. BB got some value out of him, and though most of us could not believe that this team could be better without Collins, they went out and proved it. Same could potentially be said about Butler.

I have no idea what is going through Butler's head. His on field performance makes me believe that he is a true 'Patriot' through and through, but his contract negotiations have, perhaps indirectly, become very public. After winning 2 SB, it is 'possible' that the hunger is not there, and thus replace him with someone that is hungry. If it means getting a second round pick in 2017, that is probably the most the Patriots will get for a trade, as no one will give up a 1st and sign him for Gilmore money. We could keep him, he may play not to get injured for his payday in 2018, and thus he may not play the way BB wants him to. If that is the case, the we move on from him and extract as much as we can from the situation.

I am still blindly hoping that Butler and his agent are just posturing, and that Butler is still hugely motivated. This team and its players are treading on immortality. Very few players even win 1 SB, and several on this team could be itching for 3+.

Butler for a 2nd...

It was, and now it's not, and the Patriots really shouldn't have to pay a premium because the Saints couldn't pay a $700K roster bonus without exploding their cap.

Simple question. If the Patriots were in the situation like 2012, they have no secondary, are desperate, are a good team in the hunt, would BB trade his #1 pick (#32) for Butler (if he was on another team)?

BB traded for Talib and 7th rounder for a 4th. I know it was half a season, but we did get another season on top of it. Talib was (is) the better CB and was younger. In no universe does any team trade their 1st round pick for 1 year of Butler (especially when most of the teams are not realistically in the hunt). Similarly, if they wanted Butler, they can interview him, and tell him they will pay him Gilmore money in 2018.

If BB really wanted to trade Butler, we would be lucky to get a 2nd. I think the original rumor of the trade Butler and 4th for Cook is the correct value. Butler probably squashed the idea because he did not want to go to NO and did not sign his tender. He is now meeting with Peyton, to decide if NO is worth going to. I suspect if he likes the place, he signs his tender, and NO trades back #32 to NE (or they trade us their 2nd and 3rd, as probably BB would rather have that).

Exactly which is why BB will accept a 2nd and maybe a lower pick for Malcolm because Payton needs to dole out $40m.

As much as we all love Malcolm....he is not Deion Sanders or Champ Bailey
