The 2017 Mock Draft Thread

It's a bad OT group. I'm fine with not drafting one this year.

There's only one person whose verdict on OLs matters . . .

What an amazing job, dear reamer. Thanks so much!
I owe you a dinner - unfortunately its such a long distance..

As you know I was very sceptical about Beckwith watching the two games from 2016.
You certainly washed some of the scepticism away.
As you said, some will remain.

In any case Ill go back and watch the two games again - with addition of your eyes.
Also because he might be there at #103 when all others full-sized LBs with (more or less) complete game will likely be gone. (And I was not too impressed by Anzalone either). So he could be realistic option for Pats unless BB goes higher (which I would still hope).

While on a draft day I will be crossing fingers for McMillan, and be happy with Davis or Zach, after your great review I certainly won't be looking for a pill if Beckwith is the choice.

Im gonna watch the film again in the next days and Ill come back to you. I am curious to see how my negatives about the kid possibly change (getting stuck on blocks, being too hesitant or overplaying, missing clear tackles, ? instincts, fading in big portions of the game). I did saw some positives as you did, like calling & recognising plays, bursts&blitzes, killer moves.. Ill concentrate esp. on his coverage since you pointed out some good things while I was maybe too sceptical about his tendency to leave a lot of room between him and the player he mirrors.

Thanks so much again. Happy to see it was useful to the board as well.

Wisconsin was a pretty poor game from him, I'll give you that. If I had started with that game, I would probably be pretty down on him. I still think he had some positive moments, but mostly it looked like rust. Because I was already inclined to like him from 2015 games, though, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and watched some of his other games. I think he's generally a steady, physical presence who is essentially a discount Hightower. I like him better than Freeny, who would be Hightower's backup if he leaves in FA. He's not perfect, but he has tools to work with, I think.

More thoughts later. I'm still processing the Gilmore signing and all the FA rumors. What a crazy start to the day!

Using Fanspeak:

R3P8 EDGE RYAN ANDERSON ALABAMA

R3P32 RB SAMAJE PERINE OKLAHOMA

R4P11 OL PAT ELFLEIN OHIO STATE

R5P19 CB HOWARD WILSON HOUSTON

R5P39 TE COLE HIKUTINI LOUISVILLE

R6P14 OT WILL HOLDEN VANDERBILT

R7P21 EDGE DYLAN DONAHUE WEST GEORGIA

(made sure to select at least two OL guys to keep captain stone happy).

Guys with the situation with butler looking like he isnt going to be playing here do you think corner should be higher on the draft need list. Because the way im looking at it if butler is traded back for our 32nd pick then we have gilmore playin one side and who on the other? I know eric rowe played some and we have cyrus jones but i dont think either is really even close to what we had last year. And maybe its just me but am i the only one questioning the signing of gilmore when we already had butler in place who is arguably better or on par with him?

I don't see a big difference between Butler/Rowe and Gilmore/Rowe. The thing I am most concerned with is whether Cyrus can replicate what Ryan did so well for us inside.

Personally, I don't like Rowe that much because he just never looked like a smooth athlete to me. But maybe a full offseason will somehow give him a jump and he can be a reliable #2.

The only question about Gilmore that I have is his mental toughness. If you take Ryan for example he had a stretch of games where he was used more outside, was awful there and got a ton of **** from the media and fans. However, he absorbed it and didn't let him affect all of that to the point where he turned his season around and played brilliantly down the stretch.

In any case, if there is value I'm completely happy going for a CB but as usual there is no need to force it.

If they trade Butler CB becomes a need. I don't trust Cyrus. I have no reason to and no one else does either at this point. Maybe he bounces back but we saw nothing last season to suggest he would so i assume total bust and make a contingency plan till proven otherwise.

72: EDGE JORDAN WILLIS KANSAS STATE
96: OT ANTONIO GARCIA TROY

163: LB MATT MILANO BOSTON COLLEGE
183: TE JONNU SMITH FLORIDA INT
198: S RAYSHAWN JENKINS MIAMI
239: RB DE'ANGELO HENDERSON COASTAL CAROLINA

Seems completely contradictory to what most beat reporters and people who have access to practice say about him. But whatever..

He probably meant mental aspect. Without mental ability, physical ability means little. He showed great sparks in the slot in a couple of games as well and it would be crucial if he could step into Ryan's shoes, but at the same time “reports“ on his mental issues are not encouraging as it seems he still drags the red flag scouts had about him in Draft:

“He may need to get his Twitter game in check because I think he lets some of that stuff get to him“

Its rare that something like this becomes crucial Q of scouting, but its not as benign as it seems . not easy to resolve . because its part of character.

Maybe putting him in the slot and not forcing return game could help him.

I was just thinking exactly the same thing today, that it might help his confidence to just focus on corner duties.

Totally, he seems to have issues getting over some his mental hurdles. I read it more as an overall opinion and by all accounts he seemed to be pretty decent in practice but just wasn't able to transfer that to match days.

That being said, maybe those issues will humble him a bit and make him buy into what leadership in the locker room says a bit more. A good training camp would go a long way..

Pro Football Focus has an interesting mock out today.

Mock draft 5.0: Jets trade up to take QB | PFF

Jesters trade up for Trubisky. No qb to Cleveland at 1 or 12. J. Adams is a helluva player and S. Thomas is available too if we get 12 for Jimmy G. I'd go S. Thomas. But, a secondary of; McCourty, Gilmore, M.Butler, D. Harmon and Adams replacing Chung would be better than the Legion of Boom.

Butler and Hightower's situations are still in the air but this is my attempt after the first week of FA and after that enlightening thread by @manxman2601 about the hybrid nature of our des/lbs.

72 Ryan Anderson LB Alabama
96 Howard Wilson CB Houston
131 Kareem Hunt RB Toledo
163 Joe Mathis OLB Washington
183 Michael Roberts TE Toledo
200 D'Nerius Antoine S Southern Mississipi
239 Noble Nwachukwu DE West Virginia

Things could change quite a bit depending on Hightower but i would be very satisfied with that. Though i dont think its very probable that we draft 2 guys form Toledo lol

I could see TE or RB not being a priority and a CB or DE in there anyway.

I think Anderson would be an excellent fit as regards the post I wrote the other day. I also think he could play snaps as an Inside linebacker too as a Hightower replacement. A big fan of this mock. Nice job.

Forgot to add that I really like the Howard Wilson pick too. I wonder if the Burkhead signing affects any interest we might have in Kareem Hunt though.

That's what I was thinking. They probably won't draft an rb.
Btw, you should look at dnerius antoine if you haven't yet, think you gonna like him. Chung's longterm replacement xD, actually played at lb a bit, very good tackler.

I wonder if we see Lewis role diminished. Him and burkhead have a lot of crossover.

I suspect Burkhead has been brought in as a Bolden replacement and That BB probably expects to get more out of him than he did Bolden. I think they might still draft someone like Perine to give us that big back flexibility.
