Anyone else confused by BB's trades this week?

There's also a distinct possibility that the Pats end up with enough carryover cap space from 2017 to franchise Jimmy G in 2018 without breaking the bank.

I think he will get franchised anyway. The big thing you accomplish with a lot of carryover is that no one can call your bluff that easy in terms of franchise + trade. With Cassel it was pretty obvious what would happen.

I agree. I don't think they risk the entire team they have put together by trading away the backup QB. If Brady goes down we roll on with Jimmy. Without him, quest for no 6 probably ends.

I'm sure Bill sees value in the draft. But he is looking at who he can pick at 32 against Cooks. Cooks is as young as the players in the draft and has 3 proven years in the league. He can come into NE and hit the ground running. Any draft pick is a gamble no matter who they are, and even if they end up being good players can't be relied to contribute in year 1.

If Cooks was in this draft he would be drafted mid last round or so. At 32 it seems fair value. I love the trade anyway - Cooks was my absolute binky back in 2014(?). To finally end up with him is great.

I still think a Butler trade is potentially on the cards to recoup some draft picks.

BB essentially traded the 2017 #32 for a (now) established player who was drafted at #20 in 2014, and the #64 for the (now) established player who was drafted at #60 in 2014.

Plus, he's moved UP from the #103 to the #72, and UP from the #137 to the #118 in the process.

And probably preserved enough carryover cap space to franchise Jimmy G in 2018.

They could technically trade that pick before it's made and still lose the original pick, in order to maximize value. It's not a lot of lost value, but I am sure BB cares about every morsel of value.

Yes, the Pats could trade #118, theoretically. Unless Goodell announces that it's now forfeit and the Pats receive Seattle's 4th back, which was #132.

Also, I'd forgotten they'd gotten 72 from Carolina.. But going through 2 days of the draft without adding someone would be mind-boggling..

I have some questions about not having first pick.
Potential Pats player trades who could get first round pick.
Who do you think is Pats player that you think BB would trade. everyone talking about Butler and jimmy G, but what about someone else?
I am thinking outside of box so my pick is Malcolm brown.

Only other guys I could see traded for that high a value would be Solder or Gronk. I don't see Brown carrying that much value as a DT, as good as he will be.

I doubt they trade either Gronk or Solder, given the role they hold on our team, but I would guess Gronk would be the more likely of the two. They now have a very clear path towards a 3 wideout offense, and have Allen as a moderate starting TE already.

That's all assuming you can get a 1st for a TE with 3 back surgeries on his resume. It's not easy getting extra 1sts using guys on your roster, without giving up someone you don't want to trade (see: cooks).

Now I really hope they trade JAG cause people on this board me included did a lot of souting from the projected 10-64 slot players (so to speak) and they are not there right now.

If they don't add picks I will almost feel like I wasted my time haha :p

Keep digging.
Bill will “draft“ those guys in 3-4 years.

Teams are going to have to play zones on us, which is Bradys dream.

Seriously, I don't think people are talking up this potential offense up enough. As good as history has seen.

Can't wait to see this offense. Gronk and Hogan are pretty good blockers. If we can run the ball a little with 3 wr(Edelman, Cooks and Hogan) and Gronk, it's literally unstoppable. I'm hoping we kick the tires on Mangold if he's healthy and get a
rb in the 3rd. Boogity, boogity, boogity.

Of course, I'd like to extend Hightower too. We have M. Butler for another year. Hope for an extension with him too. Seems unlikely.

I would like mangold as well. Give him a contract that is mostly a roster bonus, and let him and Andrews fight for the starter role through camp. If Andrews wins, release mangold early enough to try and catch on with someone else. Minimal risk, potential starter.

I think we could really use his size and strength inside. If he has anything left.
